Halloween is the best time to become a champion

Unread post by skip-stop »

"Did something come as a surprise to you, given your new status?"

"Besides the conference with fans and journalists, huh?" The blonde grinned. "Well, actually the most surprising thing was that I was more often recognized on the street, at first it was a real shock for me, but I'm starting to get used to it."

Astrid was sitting on a chair at a low stage, and her title belt was on the table in front of her. The Norwegian woman lowered the microphone and looked around the conference hall, there were so many people that it would not be an exaggeration to say that there was no free space for an apple to fall. Fans and journalists took all the available seats and some even had to stand on their feet. And although Astrid has communicated with the audience more than once while in the ring, it was unexpected for her that so many people came here to see her.

LAW management decided to make a fan event today, which was undoubtedly connected with the upcoming PPV. The management wanted to create a stir and there would hardly be a better way than to give fans and journalists the opportunity to personally communicate with the fighters. It was hard to say whether Astrid would have received her own panel today if not for her new status, but the fact remained. The first
openweight champion of the had the largest hall at her disposal and, judging by the number of questions she had already answered, the management did not make a mistake, giving her the opportunity to communicate with the fans.

There was a slight smile on the blonde's lips. Despite the fact that it was still unusual for her to interact with such a large number of people, she was in a very good mood. She was not one of those who was ready to open her soul to the first person she met, however, to her surprise, sharing emotions with them turned out to be much easier than she thought. Their questions gave her the opportunity to share some story from her life, and sometimes the questions became the ground for a real discussion. Astrid was glad of this because if she wanted to be a worthy champion, she needs not only to be able to swing her fists, but also to confidently interact with her fans, and it's not always that easy.

"Well," she said. "For better or worse, I think our time is running out, most of the other fighters have already finished their panels, so let me answer two more questions and we'll finish on this."

At the same moment, several dozen hands were raised, which made Astrid shake her head slightly. This showed that they still had a lot of questions. On the one hand, this was not surprising, because the Norwegian woman rarely expressed a desire to share her personal life, and now that she became a champion, she simply had no choice, which many of those present here wanted to take advantage of. However, Astrid decided to cheat and instead of choosing another journalist, pointed to a young girl who had already raised her hand several times, but never got the opportunity to ask a question.

"Yes, you!" Astrid said. "I'll be happy to find out your name and hear your question."

"Murata Moriko," the girl introduced herself, after which a blush appeared on her cheeks, which was hard not to notice, which clearly alerted Astrid. "Are you in a relationship with anyone?"

"Oh..."

A whisper ran through the hall, while the Norwegian woman slightly pursed her lips. Yes, her attempt to avoid sharp questions clearly failed. Telling funny stories about going to a bar with her friends is one thing, but sharing such personal information is quite another.

"Hmmm... I won't hide that I would prefer not to answer this question at all because I believe that personal life is not just called personal," Astrid spent a few more seconds thinking, but then decided to give an answer. "In any case, I think this question is strange, if I should answer directly, then, no, I'm not in a relationship with anyone, nevertheless, I have had several dates, and I have several women that I like."

"Women?" One of the journalists did not miss the opportunity.

"Yes, women," Astrid repeated, then grinned. "Ahead of the next two questions, no, I won't name them and, no, I have nothing against men, it just so happened that most of my time I'm surrounded by women, so you should not look for something hidden in this."

The Norwegian woman's tone clearly indicated that she no longer wanted to develop this topic, so no one else dared to try to extract more details from her. Astrid was completely satisfied with this and therefore a smile returned to her face. Maybe someday she won't have a reason to build a wall between her fans and her personal life, but that day hasn't come yet. Considering that Astrid has a real weakness for strong women, she really would like to try to build a relationship, but so far no one needs to know about it. So it's time for the last question.

"You're from Kyodo News, right?" Astrid nodded towards the journalist. "You're lucky, your question will be the last one, so ask."

"That's right, Schon Hollyberg, Kyodo News," the man introduced himself. "Halloween is coming, and with it a major PPV." These words caused a new wave of whispers, and the right corner of Astrid's lips rose noticeably. "As the first openweight champion, you are responsible for the prestige of the title and perhaps it is impossible to argue with the fact that the prestige of the title is primarily increased by high-profile matches with outstanding opponents." Astrid nodded approvingly, and the noise in the hall noticeably increased, which caused the journalist to raise his voice slightly. "Therefore, the question is quite logical, should we wait for the title defense and who will be the next to get a chance to take the top of LAW?"

An excited buzzing filled the entire conference room. Astrid also did not restrain her emotions, which is why she bared her teeth. There were not much questions about the ring today because journalists and fans wanted to know her other side. Nevertheless, the blonde was ready for this question. That's right, she really had a responsibility on her shoulders. She didn't have pink glasses in front of her eyes, and therefore she was well aware that even after everything, many people think that they are more worthy of the place that she got. Reading the comments on the Internet, Astrid was genuinely surprised by the conceit of some fighters who openly or almost openly said that the openweight title should have gone to them. Well...

"Dessert time, isn't it, huh?" Astrid joked, after which she looked at the golden belt lying on the table in front of her. "I like that you mentioned the prestige of the title because I completely agree with those words." Astrid propped her chin with her left hand. "If you look at the list of those who have the right to claim my title, then you will see a lot of worthy women there, each of whom has come a long way." Astrid's lavender eyes seemed to flash. "And although each of them has the right to challenge me, there are those with whom I have unfinished business."

Many of those present understood who Astrid was talking about, after all, there were not so many obstacles in her career that she could not overcome. And considering that she has said more than once that if she failed to overcome an obstacle the first time, then she will do it the second time, journalists and fans got an idea of who exactly the champion wants to see as the next contender.

"Halloween and the upcoming PPV gives an amazing opportunity," the blonde continued. "And although not so long ago I was not a supporter of excessive show-off, thanks to one woman I changed this position." Astrid recalled Diana with a smile on her face, because it was their match that turned into a real show. "So, yes, you will definitely see the title defense at the upcoming PPV, with coffins, pumpkins, skeletons and other great Halloween stuff, and now..." Astrid made a dramatic pause so that everyone had the opportunity to hold their breath. "The next contender for my title will be..."

Re: Halloween is the best time to become a champion

The LAW fan event wasn't just for the champion, however. Clara was requested to appear to give a few interviews, and do some signings and photos for her fans. She was one of LAW's most popular stars, and, as she heard from the management, one of the most marketable ones. Since coming back from the Apex tour, Clara has been trying her best to get wins in the company, trying to get an opportunity to win the LAW Openweight title...

...and as she was invited to this event, it appeared like the chance presented itself.

With Clara doing some smaller scale interviews for sportsnews sites, she made her way to Astrid Arvidsson's interview location, with the blonde heavyweight slowly finishing her panel as well. Astrid carried herself with beauty, power and importance befitting the champion. She was disappointed to find out that she didn't win on the day of her lewd match with Nerissa...though in retrospect, fighting in a hentai match right beforehand would've made things awkward. Regardless of her, LAW definitely made the right choice in choosing Astrid as the champ... until she got her title match, that is...

She couldn't help but giggle at a much more... personal question from a Japanese journalist, but respected her answer nonetheless. Clara had to be open with media since she was walking around with Kay quite often, but by this point, since there was little in the way of drama with her and her girlfriend after Apex, the question on that front fizzled out over the last few months.

The last question... was just what Clara needed for an opening. First, however, she was curious about the genuine answer from the champ. Baring her teeth made her interested in the answer. Was there not a plan for the Halloween show? Or was it a surprise that she coulldn't reveal yet. As Astrid got towards the answer, Clara took a deep breath. As rude as it was to interupt, especially for her British blood, she wouldn't have another chance:

"Me!"

Clara stood up from the free seat, the cameras immediately pointing at her, with the interviewers making interested noises, and whispering amongst each other to the British lightweight's response.

She walked towards Astrid with her head held high, though nervous to interrupt such an important panel. She walked towards the champion, looking her straight in the eye, as she turned her microphone towards her:

"I apologize for interrupting, Ms. Arvidsson, but you mentioned 2 perfect things that make me the perfect contender for your belt. Halloween... and being worthy, not only of the title challenge... but of the title itself.", she would say, turning the mic back towards Astrid...

"Me!"

This was what interrupted the Norwegian woman at the most important moment. Slightly raising her left eyebrow, Astrid ran her eyes around the hall and her gaze stopped at the brunette who got up from her seat. The corners of the champion's lips lifted slightly. Despite the fact that they did not know each other personally, she knew perfectly well who this woman was. And, of course, she wasn't the only one, everyone present knew who Clara Gaster was.

Under the renewed buzzing, the British woman went straight to the champion, pursued by the views of journalists who began to type very actively in their tablets. Seeing how Clara looks at her, the descendant of the great Vikings responded with the same courtesy, she looked straight into the eyes of the brunette. Clara didn't hide why she was here. And although Astrid wasn't too happy to be interrupted in this way, she was wondering if Clara would be able to present something more than just a title match claim.

And she really had something more to say. When Clara got to Astrid and unceremoniously directed the microphone to herself, she declared that she would be the best contender for two reasons at once, the first of which was Halloween itself. It was difficult to argue with this because it was no secret to anyone that one day you could see Clara in the ring, and another day you could see GASTER. Therefore, Astrid had no reason to argue with this argument. In addition, the British woman had a second, no less important reason.

As openly as possible, Clara loudly said that she was worthy not just of a title shot, but of the title itself, which was lying on the table in front of Astrid. Oh, those were really strong words. But the most important thing was that these words were true. Astrid was a very proud woman, but this pride never blinded her. And she was well aware that many believed that it was Clara who should have been in her place.

It would be a lie for Astrid to say that such a large public opinion did not hurt her in any way. However, on the day when the management entrusted her with the openweight title, she promised herself that she would burn out any doubts about it with sweat and blood. Yes, she got the title, but she understood better than anyone that the most difficult thing was yet to come, namely to prove to everyone that she was chosen the inaugural openweight champion for a reason.

"I guess our unexpected guest doesn't need an introduction, but definitely deserves a round of applause, doesn't she?" Astrid said with amazing restraint when the microphone came back to her.

Journalists and fans supported her words and the hall was filled with applause. When the audience greeted the British woman, Astrid got to her feet and stood in front of Clara, as a result of which her title symbolically was between them. Now the blonde had to lower her head slightly because Clara was almost a whole head shorter than her, not to mention that their weight difference clearly exceeded twenty kilograms. The champion ran her eyes over the brunette, and the corners of her lips lifted.

Recently, Nerissa mentioned Clara very often, or rather she talked about this woman almost incessantly, thanks to which Astrid could say that she was acquainted with the brunette in absentia. Nevertheless, it would be indecent to mention it now out loud, besides, Clara obviously did not come here for a friendly conversation.

"Many people in my place would consider you an audacious upstart, because by interrupting me you put me in a position where I can't refuse a challenge, huh!" Astrid said.

The Norwegian woman has never been able to be cunning and quirky during a conversation, preferring to say only what she thinks. And although it might have been too harsh to say it so bluntly, but what she said was the pure truth. By interrupting her so audaciously, Clara really put Astrid in a position where refusing a challenge would look like weakness on her part. However, Astrid's lips stretched into a wide smile.

"But unlike many others, I respect women who know exactly what they want and who are not afraid to demand it," Astrid briefly glanced at the title on the table, making it clear that she knows what Clara wants. "In the end, I'm the same, because if I didn't demand matches with the best of the best, then this title would never belong to me."

Her words caused a wave of noise, because everyone knew that literally from the first day the Golden Dragon began to walk over heads on the way to the top of LAW. And although she had to hear dozens of times that she was nobody and her place was nowhere, it just didn't change anything for her. She could have succumbed to the pressure and stopped. But she stubbornly kept going forward, kicking down every closed door in her path. And perhaps that is why she was chosen as the first openweight champion.

"BUT!" She suddenly said, and if before that moment her gaze was more or less friendly, now her gaze has become much more serious. "Don't think that I can't see what's going on in your heart." She even took half a step forward, not to scare Clara, but to show the seriousness of her words. "Maybe your reputation doesn't allow you to say it out loud, but I can see it in your eyes and hear it in your words, so let me say what you can't say." Lightning flashed in the blonde's lavender eyes. "You think you are more worthy to be in my place, and this injustice is eating away at you from the inside." Even if Clara didn't admit it, Astrid would just think that the British woman is just deceiving herself. "Envy is not a quality that a champion should have." The blonde's eyes narrowed slightly, as if she was looking not at Clara, but through her. "Therefore, Clara Gaster, yes, you will get your title shot, you will get a chance to prove that it was you who should have been in my place." The hall was filled with hubbub, and journalists began to ask a variety of questions, each of which Astrid ignored because she had not finished yet. "And I, in turn, will get a chance to beat this envy out of you with pumpkins, and what remains, I will stuff into a coffin and close the damn lid!" After these words, Astrid bared her teeth again, waiting for Clara's answer.

Re: Halloween is the best time to become a champion

Clara wondered how Astrid would react to her interruption. From what she heard, Astrid was an honourable sort, and didn't get into fights unless actively provoked by her rivals. While slightly rude, she didn't believe herself to be worse than some of the more brutal folks in the company. She was, however, very curious about Astrid's reaction towards her words...

The start was surprisingly polite. Were she any lesser a wrestler, perhaps the words might've sounded like sarcasm... but no. The journalists and fans attending the event did indeed applaud Clara, to the point of making the British woman blush.

Astrid rose, showing the height and body difference between the two potential competitors, but Clara looked the current champion straight in the eye, unwavering. She heard the clicks of smartphones, people getting a solid shot of the two. With each passing second, the present situation made it more and more difficult for Astrid to say no. And Astrid understood that, Clara lightly giggling at the Norwegian blonde's statement, before agreeing with her next words. She knew that if she didn't start going for what she wanted to have, she would never get anywhere...

However, the champion's loud "BUT" made her smile falter. Still looking champion in the eye as she listened to her every word, trying to mull it over for a minute, as she took a deep breath. Time slowed to a crawl... and she could feel her heart beating out of her chest.

Suddenly, it all crashed down on her.

Suddenly, it felt like she was back 4 years ago, back losing in the main event for the title of inaugural LAW Lightweight champion.

Suddenly, she wanted to run.

Was Astrid right? Was it envy? DId she seriously want to be the Openweight champion? Was that envy justified? What if she clearly lost again? Would she leave LAW again? Would she leave wrestling permanently? Would she...

Clara took a deep breath.

"No.", she would tell herself in her head.

Clara exhailed.

In the past 4 years, she had grown. 6 years ago, when she came to LAW, she was a very cowardly woman, unable to live up to her own potential. As those long years have gone by, Halloween of 2023 was the night where that would change. She turned the table mic towards herself once more:

"You are worthy to be in your place, Ms. Arvidsson. A champion has to be able to assess their potential challengers, in terms of physicallity, in terms of skills...in terms of psychology. Matches, especially in wrestling, start before the bell even rings..."

The crowd of the event muttered in confusion... was the challenger selling herself short already?

"HOWEVER!", Clara raised her hand as she loudly declared the word: "You are not as good in reading your opponent. You are close, I am driven by a deadly sin...but not envy. It's greed. And it's been driving me for a very long time. Because in the end, if you are not even a tiny bit greedy in this business, you will always end up as a curtain jerker, never the last one out. So yes, Ms. Arvidsson, you are going to have to beat that greed out of me with pumpkins, otherwise, I will never rest in the coffin you want to put me into... otherwise, you are going to be the one on death's door..."

Clara put her hand on the belt, lightly touching the golden plate: "Otherwise... this will be mine..."

After hearing another "Ms. Arvidsson", the blonde had to make some efforts to keep calm on her face. It is unlikely that Clara put anything negative into this, but such addressing was not what the Norwegian woman was used to. From her point of view, such addressing was more a joke than a courtesy. Even if it was a real courtesy, it was so deliberate that Astrid didn't feel sincere in it at all. However, she tried to just ignore it, besides Clara had more interesting things to say.

The blonde raised her left eyebrow slightly when Clara declared that she was driven not by envy, but by greed. Well, these are really two different things, it was pointless to argue about it. However, unlike Clara, Astrid did not think that greed is something better than envy.

Despite the fact that it had nothing to do with LAW, Astrid had heard a story about a woman from another federation who had been trying to get the main title for many years. Despite the huge support from fans, she repeatedly failed, which as a result forced her to change her methods. Was it envy or greed, but it pushed her to terrible things. What was the result? As a result, she got what she wanted, but lost all support, becoming a champion who gets boo instead of applause.

"Greed you say..."

Astrid shifted her gaze to Clara's hand, which the brunette had placed on the belt. It just so happened that Astrid never liked to take responsibility for anything other than herself. However, on the day when the management chose her as the inaugural openweight champion, a great responsibility fell on her shoulders. It took her a while to realize this, but now she had two very difficult tasks ahead of her. She is obliged to do everything in her power to raise the prestige of her title to the skies and she is obliged to make sure that on the day she loses, her successor will receive applause, not boo.

"Then we'll see how far this greed will take you..." there was a flash in her lavender eyes and she smoothly put her right hand on the belt. "But for now..."

With a light but confident move, the blonde intended to pull the belt towards her and thereby move it away from Clara. Hardly anyone would have seen anything unusual in this, but Astrid was sure that Clara would understand this hint. In addition, the Norwegian woman was not going to hide what she meant...

"For now it's not yours yet!" Astrid's lips stretched with a smile. "Gather all your greed, Clara Gaster, because if your desire to become a champion is limited only to this, then you will need every drop of it."

It might seem that Astrid had completely forgotten that they were surrounded by fans and journalists. In a sense, this was indeed true because at that moment she was not thinking about anything except Clara and their upcoming match. No one and nothing will be able to accurately predict the result, but Astrid intended to do everything in her power to ensure that a woman driven by greed would not get the title that was entrusted to her. However... before Clara got the right to officially call herself a contender, there was only one thing left to do. Removing her right hand from the belt, Astrid extended this hand forward, offering to seal their deal with a handshake.

"Happy upcoming Halloween, huh!" She said, showing that even despite their diametrically opposed views, she is looking forward to their match.

After Clara's proclamation, she could feel Astrid's eyes on her. She wasn't looking down on her, not in the way where she felt herself that she was superior... but the gaze felt judging. Despite Clara's best attempt at putting a tough front, she couldn't deny that, right now, in front of a big, powerful champion like Astrid, alongside her insecurities bubbling up in her mind... she felt incredibly small...

The belt was moved away from her hand, and Clara exhaled. No, she told herself. She would have it soon enough, but for now, it definetely wasn't her's.

She smiled, accepting the handshake, confidence reappearing in her eyes: "Happy Halloween..."

WIth the final act by the challenger, the camera's exploded in flashes, and after a good few seconds of the handshake, the Brit took her leave, turning one last time towards her rival:

"No need to remove the sticker by the way! Mwahahahahaha..."

If Astrid were to look at her belt, she would see that, in the middle of it, Clara's long time symbol - her smiley face, was stuck to it! It was easy enough to remove, but for Clara, the point was to fully establish her claim to the belt!

Fans and journalists started buzzing excitedly the moment Astrid offered Clara a handshake. But for real conference hall was filled with noise after the British woman accepted it and gave the champion's hand a confident shake. Journalists and their cameras captured this moment in all its glory, which clearly indicated that it was only a matter of time before loud headlines in the news.

Nightmare on LAW Street. Astrid Arvidsson vs GASTER.

When the brunette let go of Astrid's hand, the Norwegian woman nodded to her, without a word making it clear that very soon they would meet again and next time their meeting would be much less friendly, because they both would have to fight for the right to possess the most significant title in the history of LAW.

Looking after the woman who Astrid could now freely call her rival, she was sure that Clara would simply leave the conference hall. Therefore, she slightly raised her left eyebrow at the moment when Clara looked over her shoulder. Did the brunette decide to throw a threat or something like that at parting? Considering all that the blonde had heard about this woman, it would be a real disappointment for her.

"What?" Astrid asked in surprise, hearing Clara's unexpected words and her laughter.

The champion turned her head to the side and looked at the title belt. There was a sticker in the form of GASTER's smiling mask. Perhaps many others in her place would have been offended by this, but Astrid found it very funny, which made both corners of her lips rise in a smile.

"Phah!" She couldn't help but chuckle. "Nice joke..."

She didn't even take off the sticker right away, instead calmly waiting for Clara to leave the conference hall, after which she placed the belt on her right shoulder. She took the microphone and smiled broadly at the fans and journalists.

"Well, I guess on that note our meeting is over!" She said. "I was really glad that you all came here today, I hope to see you again soon!" After a short pause, she raised her championship belt above her head. "See you at Nightmare on LAW Street!"

Amid cheers and applause, Astrid put the microphone on the table and headed for the exit, high-fiving everyone who reached out to her along the way. Well, she definitely didn't think this meeting would end like this. However, she wasn't going to deny that this turn of events made everything much more exciting. After all, when it comes to the championship, you have no right to expect that everything will go according to your plan. The champion must be ready for this. Therefore, Astrid intended to face the new challenge on her way with dignity. It was with this thought in mind that she left the conference hall.
