Dumb Question about two ladies on the same writer roster facing off?

Unread post by Highfly »

Hey, I have had this question kicking around and wondered what others thought. Is it possible for two wrestlers both used by the same writer to face off?

Like, if I wanted Alaina to face Helena and wrote up the match in its entirety could it be posted and count as canon?

I am just curious what other people think and figured I would put this out there.

I don't see a problem with it, from a fairness-and-rules perspective, unless someone started using it to pad a character's win-loss record or something.

HUGE DISCLAIMER: I don't believe, nor am I trying to suggest, that this is what you'd be doing!

But I guess my question is just.. why? Wouldn't what you're shooting for - i.e., a rivalry or storyline, I'm guessing? - be more fulfilling if someone else was playing the rival? I might be missing the point.

The short is, I think it'd be rules-acceptable?

I think this could be pretty cool. I already did it once to set up a scene with my chars house XD

I just heard people say that reading a teacher vs. student match with Alaina vs. Tina would be a fun read for example.

I was just throwing it out as a suggestion to see what people think of things like that out of curiosity.

It could be. I dunno. I actually think we're comparing apples to oranges, and that's where my reservations come from.

What you're talking about isn't RP, but rather writing story. So if I look at it that way, it doesn't feel as confusing. If people want it and it floats your boat, cool beans! As I said earlier, I don't think it violates any rules - someone can correct me on that.

It's not my personal cup o' tea, but that's just me. The potential for abuse in record-padding, folks bizarrely using it as a means to circumvent actually working with people or contributing to the community, and jobbing to one's own characters for the sake of artificially puffing clout does concern me, though.

To repeat from earlier, I'm not suggesting this is anything HF's trying to do or has any interest in. But it's something that's nagging at the back of my mind if this becomes a thing. Maybe I'm alone in that. Just my thoughts on it!

I understand what you're saying Cyan, but with this community, I don't see a bunch of people looking to pad their characters win/loss records out, I see a bunch of people wanting to tell stories, and if your story involves two of your own characters facing off, then go for it!

If there is serious concern for abuse, maybe we could have it be that matches against one's own character don't count to either character's win/loss record while still being considered canon?

I'm inclined to agree, Rainy. This is a fantastic community, from what I can tell! I've been here, like, what, a week? XD But it's already made a great impression. So my concerns are just what I said - nagging in the back of my mind.

I'm not opposed to the storyline effecting their win/loss record. I mean, if it's a match, it makes sense, right? My concern would be like...

"This character is awesome, check out the win/loss record for proof." --And it's padded out with their own roster fighting themselves.
"Look how awesome I write, I'm fantastic." --While seldom actually RPing with others. That's what we're here for, right?
"This character is a big deal, they beat these people." --With their victims being their own roster.

Again, this community's been pretty great. I can't see anyone I've talked to actually doing any of the above, and I've talked to a good number of people by now! All's I'm saying is that as the site grows and attracts more people, we may find some folk who use it for that. But as long as it doesn't become a regular thing, I wouldn't expect it to be a situation.

This isn't to discourage you, HF! Gimme a second to adjust my tinfoil hat... /)9_9;(\

To mention AFW here, I found a match that Clobber Jobber wrote between his chars. Don't remember who they were, but I don't believe he ran into trouble with it.

I wanted to ask when situation arose when I would decide to write Melody and Navi facing off.

I can see the appeal as well as the drawbacks of allowing people to post matches between their own characters. I can't think of a way to do it offhand without enforcing a plethora of rules to avoid it being abused and to prevent the padding of resumes or people trying to get themselves over without interacting with others.

I'm not currently able of working out logistics of defining rules for everyone. I am against the idea being used by anyone and everyone at their own leisure. I think for now, we'll do it on a case by case basis. And allow it to happen with permission.

I don't really see a problem with it. Win/loss records shouldn't really matter much, and I think most of us are smart enough to look at someone's history and tell if they've been padded or not.
