The Emperors and Empresses of old who ruled beneath the banner of the double-headed eagle inspired awe as far away as frozen Scandinavia and struck fear into their enemies as far away as the Persian heartlands, and Irene Sabattios--Basileia of the Ring--is no exception. Her royal gravitas is enough to make any opponent think twice before they attack, but she is not a cruel monarch. The rulers of Constantine's City were well known for their hospitality to all, and Irene brings this quality to the ring as well--because it is HER ring. She is equal parts kind and cunning, willing to play you in front of crowds of thousands as deftly as she handles court politics, but never without honor.

Irene was born the eldest of three daughters, and as the eldest, Irene was of course the child who her parents expected to take care of herself while they focused on her younger sisters. As such, Irene developed an independent streak, learning quick how to decide things for herself. Her ability to think for herself only served to drive her towards success in everything she attempted, too.
She was the team captain whenever she and the other kids played sports after school; she was always either at the top of her class academically, or else nearly there; whatever was happening, Irene wanted a piece of the action, and she always gave 110% in everything she did. While the other kids always saw the activities as merely something to do, Irene saw every activity as a challenge, a mountain to climb, and she was NEVER daunted by the odds.
Although Irene always helped her parents with her siblings when needed, she also developed a tendency to find her own interests and niches--some of which came from the strangest places. While attending secondary school, for example, Irene was chosen to play Theodora, the wife of famed Emperor Justinian, in a play for a class project. To prepare for the role, Irene read a few sources on Theodora so she could know the person she was playing, but she only expected to have a thin understanding--it was only a class project, after all, hardly a blockbuster movie production.
Surprisingly, though, Irene found herself fully drawn into Theodora's character and her backstory--how she came from nothing to become an empress, and how she commanded power and respect everywhere she went. Theodora was a woman without peer in her world, and consequently Irene took an immediate fascination with her, even taking her as a role model of sorts. Irene wasn't royalty herself, of course, but that wouldn't stop her from living her life with the same determination and tenacity Theodora exhibited. In all things, Irene would be an Empress.
Once she was in university, Irene decided to try a new sport. Nothing really caught her eye, however, until she found an MMA club advertisement promising to teach newcomers how to compete. Intrigued, she signed up--and quickly caught on. In just her first year, she finished 5th out of 50 participants in the local championship competition. By the time she finished university, Irene was the top MMA fighter on the entire island of Crete, with a big trophy to show for it too. Combat sports thrilled Irene like nothing else; the intense battles made her heart beat unlike anything else, and, no matter what happened, it was a sport where Irene could truly feel in control since, ultimately, it was her versus the opponent. If she wanted to win, she was in full control of her own training and preparation, and she could always rely on herself to give every match her best effort.
But what to do with this ability, this passion for combat sports?
That conundrum was solved when, one weekend at the fighting gym, a friend of Irene handed her a flyer advertising a local wrestling organization that put on shows all over Greece. The organization, known as "Hellenic Extreme Wrestling," or "HEW," was coming to Hieraklion and invited locals to show up to their tryouts, and Irene's friend encouraged Irene to give it a try. Irene hesitated for a little, but ultimately decided that now was not the time to turn down a challenge--especially if that challenge would pay her to do what she loved most: combat sports.
Sure enough, HEW couldn't get enough of Irene, who had even locked the trainers in holds they had never heard of before the tryouts were finished. All she needed then was a wrestling persona, and Irene only needed a moment to think of who she would be: the Empress.
And just like that, Irene was a professional wrestler on an indie circuit. She spent several years with HEW, honing her craft--pro-wrestling has different requirements from MMA, but that didn't stop Irene--and even holding the HEW Championship Belt three times as the Basileia. She also developed her character to be a tweener, not exactly good and not exactly bad; after all, an Empress must do what she must in order to succeed. She was smart, yes; cunning, even. But not dishonorable, never dishonorable. The Game was about success, but not at the expense of creating more enemies for yourself, and Irene made sure to learn how to play the game well.
Her never-ending desire for excitement also led Irene to try matches of a more risqué variety at house shows, match types that she learned were known as "hentai" matches. Irene didn't care, though; the matches were fun, and she rarely lost a match anyhow. She was truly the Empress, and the ring was her queendom!
Finally, the owner of HEW passed on an offer to Irene to join LAW in Japan. It was a win-win: HEW wanted new talent for new storylines, and Irene would jump up to a new level of competition and difficulty.
