As the victor of the previous match claimed her prize and slipped out of sight, the lights of the M&T Bank Stadium flickered as the titantron once again came to life. The image faded in slowly, from a murky black, while the sound of wind stilled any rustling in the crowd. Soon, the central image became clear: A canvas, against which was projected the black silhouette of wagon wheel, suspended on wooden scaffolding. The wheel was slowly rotating, its cobweb-draped spokes spinning like the arms of a windmill. Then, the voice of Mr. Halloween is unmistakable.
”As we turn the page, we come to a chapter dedicated to a single person. A solo adventure, if you would, though one crowded with many enemies. As part of this tale, I am offered the rare opportunity to share with you a gem from my collection.” Although the book is not visible, the audience can hear paper sliding on paper.
”The history of the device whose shadow you see projected runs some several thousand years, and is believed to have been used in the age of the Romans.” As the wind continued to rumble, the audience would begin to detect other sounds creeping into the background. Here’s the groan of wood being turned, there’s the snap timber splitting. As the wheel continues to spin, another shadow begins to darken, overlaid on the wheel—the image of a skeletal body, arms splayed to the edges of this wheel, spinning at the same rate as the accelerating circle. ”The device's operation is simple: The victim is bound, ankle and wrist, to its circumference and then...spun. Faster and faster and faster, until…”
Splat. What had been the sound of wood creaking became a wet crunch. Screams echo, soft and distant, beneath the wind. The skeleton's arms bend, then break, spinning off at comic angles as the torso and skull contorted with agony. At the same time, a thin sheet of gray smoke rose in front of the camera's view.
”...An iron rod is inserted between the spokes, breaking the limbs of our unfortunate victim. Thus the name of Gabriel Vinlee's adversary: The Breaking Wheel.”
The screams began to fade and die, until once again only the cold wind blew through the stadium, and the wheel's turning came to a stop. The smoke, before only a thin film, now casts the entire room in a thick brown fog, red and flickering from flames offscreen.
”Tonight, this long-inactive device will once again see use, as we aim to break another woman. For Gabriel...sweet Gabriel...we will spin the wheel. We will spin it seven times, once each for seven deadly nightmares, each sent to snap the limbs of our victim.”
As Mr. Halloween spoke, the sheet onto which the shadows had been projected began to gout flames. The room was utterly engulfed in black smoke. At the same moment, the same black smog rose from under the ring, billowing angry clouds until they had completely covered the ring. When the smoke had receded, a wheel stood at the center of the ring—a casino's roulette, propped up like a breaking wheel.
”Which will crack first, I wonder? Will it be the spirit, the will, and the body of Gabriel Vinlee? Or the iron bones of her assailants? We will soon see. Spin the wheel, and we may begin.”
