A Wine N' Wrestling First! Jonathan and William

Alaina was setting things up and changing things up today. Normally she interviewed a woman of LAW sitting out in her yard sipping on wine while sunbathing in a swimsuit. Sometimes she didn't need as much wine to really get women to loosen up if it was someone she knew, but if it was someone she was unfamiliar with it did help make things casual.

Today she was interviewing not just one but two males for the first time. She had Emaline and company here before as a team so that wasn't new, but guys? This was going to be a bit different. Alaina wasn't wearing a bikini for one. She felt like her being 47 years old flaunting her figure in a bikini for two younger men, one of whom was married to Astrid at a wedding Alaina and family were invited to, seemed to send the wrong signal. Charlie and the kids were out for the day. Alaina wasn't about to act like some cougar who cheated on her husband whose childcare and ability to be a great dad allowed Alaina to return to the wrestling ring. Today she wore some very short shorts and a tank top, but no bikini.

Alaina had a nice bottle of merlot for herself, but inside a cooler near the other two chairs she set up were some beer of Charlie's choosing. He knew some good local breweries back home, and had made some of his own in a basement brewing setup he had been trying to perfect the past 18 months. Alaina hoped the Charlie brewed chocolate stout, and more basic Belgian amber ale were to the liking of Jonathan and William.

As per usual Alaina would allow them to ask her anything they wanted as well. She would be taking a more casual approach to things today, knowing that getting to know the men would be a smart way to get familiar and create a more open interview.

Jonathan pulled up into the driveway of Alania’s house using the rental car they had. They would definitely need to buy a new car soon for their frequent trips to Japan, but William was just making this trip since Alania wanted to get an interview with them for her Wine N Wrestling series. William wore a “Santa Monica Pier” blue sleeveless shirt with orange shorts and sandals on. Jonathan got out of the driver’s side door and wore a buttoned-up blue shirt with light blue jeans and white sneakers. The boys came over to the table as William offered a hug to Alania.

“Alania! It’s so good to see you again! It’s been quite some time. Thanks for having us!” William exclaimed as he hugged the Amazon and Jonathan settled for just a handshake.

“The name is Jonathan. We probably met at the wedding in Norway briefly,” Jonathan greeted as he and Will took their seats.

Alaina smiled as they approached and waved to them. She stood up, walking over as William gave her a hug. "Hey there! I hope things are going great with Astrid, how do you like married life?" Alaina asked him. before shaking Jonathan's hand.

"Hey there! I think we did meet in passing there." Alaina said, recalling her kids keeping her busy for much of the wedding. "Guys sit down and relax, I have some wine and I have a few beers that my husband brewed. I really hope they aren't nasty." Alaina said with a nervous laugh. "So lets start nice and easy.... what drew the two of you to wrestling?"

“I bet anything your husband brewed is better than what they served us in Alberque. Remember that house show we had to drive two hours to and you just had to get a cold one real quick, Will?” Jonathan asked as he pulled out his chair and sat down.

“We were retaining that night. And if we didn’t make it, we were under the Freebird Rule. Josh and Dominick could’ve filled in for us,” William replied.

“Long story short, Will and I didn’t have the best Bud Lights that night. Will insisted to drive drunk and launched our car into a fence. We ended up missing the show where our friends he mentioned went on in our place and we spent the night in jail,” Jonathan explained to Alania.

William looked inside the cooler grabbing two chocolate merlot bottles for the both of them. He unscrewed his lid and took a test drink as he loved the sweet taste swishing between his lips. William nudged Jonathan to try and Jonathan drank a small swig as he did nod his head. William turned to Alania and made himself comfortable.

“Well, back in our time, you either stayed on the indies or you go for the big times. You essentially had one shot to make and you had to get through developmental before they even thought of getting you on their main shows. Luckily, me and my best friend, Daniel, had a good rivalry for developmental’s world title so it was good enough to bring us up. William came in a couple years after and we just clicked as a group. We’re big names, because of it,” Jonathan explained.

“I worked out most of my schooling in the gym and did some amateur wrestling so that was my introduction to it. I accidentally injured someone in a state tournament and got banned for life, but a coach recommended me to other people so they brought me over to pro wrestling,” William added.

Alaina raised an eyebrow and took in all of what they said. "You are lucky you only spent one night in jail and are still alive after that one. If ya ever pull anything like that with Astrid in the car I just may have to end you." Alaina said with a smile that was not the nicest of smiles. However she immediately shift gears and was back in interviewing mode.

"I remember that when I began in the late 90s. It was very different for women looking to get into wrestling than it is now, and things changed for the better." Alaina said. "So once you made it big what titles have ya won and where are some of your favorite places to wrestle?" Alaina asked the duo.

“I learned my lesson after Jonathan bashed me in my groin with a baseball bat a year later,” William stated.

“You had it coming,” Jonathan added with a snicker.

“For me, I started in a promotion called Western Fever Wrestling in Ohio a year before I joined the biggest promotion in America. I mainly wrestled squash matches, but it was my start in wrestling. I am one of the longest reigning United States Champions with the big promotion I signed with and a 9-time tag team champion throughout my career. Most of those reigns with Jonathan as the Tag Team Gods,” William explained.

“I loved wrestling in the developmental promotion I started with and it lead me to the biggest promotion I would ever sign with. World Heavyweight Champion at 21 and an 11-time tag team champion. I retired in 2011 at 25 for a little bit as I had other aspirations to deal with. I ran for Governor of Ohio and for city council in Columbus failing at both. I returned in 2018 in Detroit, Michigan inside a high school gym taking on a young prospect named Malcom Jacobs. He called himself The Intellectual Mind, but I finished him pretty quickly,” Jonathan added.

"Wow! The two of you accomplished a lot very quickly! Back in 1997 when I got a big break it seemed a lot different back then." Alaina said. Both of these men out-titled her although she felt perhaps her reigns were longer? She could look it up later. "You two have been good sports so far, any questions for me from either of you?" Alaina asked as she sipped on her wine and looked over at them.

“What’s your philosophy on wrestling? What do you think wrestling is all about? Seems generic, but it has a lot of variations. Some wrestlers believe skill is the most important thing about the sport, some believe it’s the art, some people think it’s about the fame, some people think it’s about the crowd, etc. What’s your belief?” Jonathan asked.

From one veteran to another, Jonathan liked knowing how others perceived wrestling. You had those that took it seriously and those that just wanted a piece of fame to add to their resume. In today’s age, anyone can be a wrestler with how stacked the independent scene is and there are also the bigger promotions like LAW and WFPW to make a lot of marks. Big breaks don’t come around very often and a wrestler has to know why they compete in this sport.

"Oh? Hmmm...." Alaina had to think about this one for a second. "I love LAW, but I am a wrestling purist. The kinky stuff should stay at home and not be in the ring. The best women set foot in that ring and do what they can to win without resorting to cheap shots. Fight hard, fight clean. I feel like giving it a full effort gives the fans what they want to see in turn. I just think people going out there and trying to be the best lead to the best matches and advances the popularity among the fans. I also would love it if the womens wrestling scene could fully catch up to the mens. I mean the whole sleep for a contract or tryout shot days are over thankfully, but for a female wrestler to be really popular I feel like the requirement is to be good in the ring while looking good. You guys have to be good and if you are easy on the eyes it is a bonus but not a requirement to get that mainstream popularity status." Alaina said.

"I ranted again huh? Sorry about that."

“Hmmm…how did you and your husband meet? How did this little love story get started?” William asked.

Maybe a bit more personal questions could set the mood of the conversation back on track. They were indeed here to discuss the sport, but getting to know the people behind the characters were just as important. LAW was a bit more real than they were use to, but Jonathan and William were mainly here to help the youth talent get their feet wet. The occasional match was just if there were particular people they wanted to face. Jonathan wasn’t really a fan of intergender wrestling and William only wanted to face people that kept up with him despite his size.
