A Kindling Rivalry

Finlay nodded to her as she spoke. It was the first time she aknowledged this as a competition, good. That meant he could more outwardly treat it as such without worry. Stretching his arms out to loosen them after that intense workout he nodded to the girl as he walked forward.

”Yeah but you still won in the end which is what matters.” He said not reacting to Amy lifting her shirt up to wipe some of the sweat off her face. He knew most guys would have likely gone gaga about the briefly exposed and sweaty stomach, but to him he was more focused on somethint else..

“That’s the start though, I chose this so it’s you’re call what we do next.” Finlay said as he gestured behind his head to the bench press as the workout he picked.

What was once a friendly workout session had now turned into a competition of sorts. Amy would normally have no interest in such things, but that was not the case right now. Since Finlay made it clear that he wasn't about to give up, it seemed as though this workout session was far from over.

He gave her the "honor of choosing" the next challenge, although he made a motion behind him which made it pretty obvious what he was alluding to. After looking around, she noticed that the bench presses had opened up. There were two free ones side-by-side. She quickly made her way over to them and gestured.

"How about these ones?" Now that they're open, we can do them together."

The blonde new zealander turned to where Amy had pointed and spotted the bench weights. ”Ah. That is where you’re eye initially went too when we came over to this area so makes sense.” He said as he walked over to them and inspected the weights. “So, since its a bit more clear now that this is a competition... He said turning up to face her. “Only makes sense to choose a weight level that may be challenging for the both of us, rather than us each doing our pace.” He said making their challenge a bit more official as he inspected the magnitudes of weights available.

"Alright, that sounds fine with me," she replied. She bent down to inspect the weights as well. "Normally, I work my way up with these things. I start around 150 lbs or so, and eventually end around 200 or 225, depending on the day."

She put one weight down and picked up another.

"With that in mind, how would you like to start this out?"

Finlay nodded to the female blonde as she explained her usual training method with these, nodding to himself at how similar their workouts with them sounded. ”I normally start with 155 poindsand then go up to 215 before moving on.” He said, explaining his own methods before continuing. “So to keep things interesting lets start off at 210 pounds. A rough median for what we could both lift.” He said, laready starting to change out the weights on one of the bars to get it set up for their next workout.

Nodding her head, Amy seemed to be in agreement with this. An average start, not too easy, not too hard. It made total sense to her. She changed out the weights on her own bench, before sitting down.

"How do you wanna score things? Based on time taken to a certain rep-count, number of reps, or highest limit pressed?" The previous two 'competitions' had a lot of ambiguities, and Amy didn't want to mess around with subjective possibilities.

As it was, she was starting to feel an ache in her back and shoulders. It seemed like that deadlift might have been a tad too much for the blonde girl.

After finishing adjusting the weights on the bar Finlay took a seat on the bench and laid back preparing himself for their next competition’. But he would look over to Amy as she brought up how to judge this next one. ”Hmm I say we make it a test of endurance and keep making reps until the other can’t.” He said with a nod to the girl as he reached up and grabbed the bar in preperarion. “Sound fair to you?” He asked before starting, wanting to make sure they were on the same page.

"Hmm, alright! Sounds like a plan to me!" She smiled. This was actually pretty exciting! "We both will do a rep together after each interval." She too finished fixing her weights to match those that Finlay was using.

She got into position and got ready to lift. "Okay, on you mark then!" she said, waiting for her competitor to give the go signal.

Finlay laid on the bench and nodded to Amy as he waited for her to do the same. ”Alright, on three.” He said over to his fellow blonde as he reached up to grab the bar above him and taking a deep breath. “One... two...” He said sparing a look at Amy again to make sure she was ready. “three!” He said as he lifted the weight off its rack and down to his chest before pushing up to start his reps.

Amy readied herself for the competition to start. She took a deep breath in, and prepped herself to be ready to go. By the time she heard the "three" she would lift the weight off of her own rack and begin her reps as well. As the two started, Amy kept in sync with Finlay's matching him in both speed and height of the rep.

But that wouldn't last forever. Around the tenth rep, the beads of sweat had began to cover her face far more than previously, and she began to slow, significantly. The strain she had put herself through earlier had come back to bite her.
