A Meetup at the Gym (for ClockwerkSamurai12)

Unread post by CaptainL »

Continued from here

Even as she made her way down the street to the LAW gym, Lacey didn't quite know what to make of it. She had come to LAW expecting to take her relatively successful indie career to new heights, reaching a bigger audience than ever before and taking her talents international, but her performance in her first few matches had proved frustratingly disappointing, with loss after loss no matter how hard she tried. It all left her wondering if she should bother - and it only fed into those unwanted feelings and doubts in the back of her mind that she'd always be a disappointment, and that her career wasn't going anywhere.

But for all Lacey regretted her losses, she didn't regret the people she had met through them. Even if both Reiko and Arizona had beaten her, both had a healthy respect for the green-haired girl, and both were willing to get closer to her. She supposed she always did have a knack for making friends, and it seemed her naturally gregarious attitude had endeared herself even to her opponents. Reiko had wanted to get to know her more personally, and now, Arizona had extended the invitation for Lacey to meet up with her at the gym for some training. Lacey sighed to herself when she thought back on how her less-than-stellar efforts in her match had meant she would need to seek out training in the first place. But at least there was a light at the end of the tunnel. If Lacey had to train, hopefully, she could only learn her lessons about staying competitive with her fellow wrestlers at LAW, and bounce back from her defeats better than ever!

Now, coming to the gym, Lacey stepped through the door and onto the floor inside. There, she took a moment to glance back and forth, scanning the room for any signs of Arizona.

Arizona has her legs wrapped around a punching bag doing sit-ups, grunting as she does.

It didn't take long for Lacey to catch sight of Arizona - who, she found, was already hard at work in launching herself into her training. When she looked over to see the cowgirl with her legs wrapped around the punching bag, she blinked a few times, her eyes growing wider with curiosity. As far as exercises went, that was certainly...different. But she could see its uses. After all, in their match, Arizona had kept the green-haired girl under control with her submissions, and it would have certainly been in her best interests to train her endurance and grip strength to make sure she could effectively apply and maintan such holds. If she was focusing on honing that strength now, that was surely proof that Arizona had the right sense of determination and know-how for Lacey to learn a valuable lesson from her.

...Of course, that would be hard if Arizona didn't even acknowledge she was here. Stepping up to her side, Lacey stared blankly down at Arizona for a few moments, waiting to see if she'd notice, before she cleared her throat to try and get her attention. "Uh...we WERE gonna meet up now, right?"

Despite Lacey's initial bewilderment at Arizona already launching into her routine, it didn't take long for the green-haired girl to warm up to her once she explained herself. She chuckled, flashing a warm smile toward the cowgirl as she shrugged her gym bag off her shoulders to carry it at her side. "Well...okay, then! A little bit of exercise never hurts, I guess..." She did admit it was a little eccentric, but there was nothing really wrong with that. In fact, if Arizona was willing to turn every moment into an opportunity to train, maybe she should start doing that herself. Did...did that mean she was slacking?

Nevertheless, Lacey cleared her throat, collecting herself. There would be other times to worry about that. She had better things to attend to now. She kneeled down to get to Arizona's level, watching her as she continued to run through her exercises. "Soooo, er...you have a plan for how this is going to get started? We doing any stretches? Warm-ups? Or are we gonna go straight into sparring?"

She didn't quite know what to expect, she realized. She'd trained with other wrestlers before, but she was still getting used to being part of a promotion of this scale, where everyone still felt like a stranger. Even approaching Arizona, someone she knew and had worked with, felt different from what she was used to - it was, after all, her first encounter with her out of the ring. Back at WOWW, she had the chance to bond with her coworkers and hang out before and after shows, but when LAW's roster was so vast, Arizona still felt like another face in the crowd. Hopefully, this could at least break the ice a little...

Arizona: *Gets off of the punching bag* Well that depends, what do you struggle with the most so I can help you improve?

Well. That certainly left the ball in Lacey's court. As she heard Arizona's question, the green-haired girl let out a long huff, reaching back to scratch at her head as she chewed her lip nervously. There were plenty of answers that came bubbling to the surface - every doubt and insecurity she had in her, and everything she felt she didn't do as well as she should - but just the thought of admitting those things made her wince. It didn't feel right to discuss her own failures. To do so meant that she had to come face to face with the fact that she just wasn't as good a wrestler as she wanted to be - and that was the last thing she wanted to think about when she was already nursing the disappointment of a less than stellar start to her LAW career. But the first step to solving a problem was confronting it. And she wouldn't get any better if she didn't owe up to her defeats. She was here to try and turn her luck around - and she needed to put aside her pride and let Arizona help her.

"...Uh, well..." As Lacey looked back at the cowgirl, her thoughts drifted back to how she'd lost their match, being forced to submit to Arizona's punishing holds. They had whittled down at her stamina all through the match, and when it came time for Arizona to hit her finisher, Lacey just didn't have enough left in her to defend against it. She winced at the thought, but surely she would have many opponents in matches to come who would test her stamina in the same ways. When that time came, she couldn't afford to be weak like that again.

Her voice was soft, as though she was afraid of anyone hearing her confession - or maybe it was that she herself was too afraid to say it. But she cleared her throat and spoke nonetheless. "I was thinking that...you might be able to help train my endurance? So I can take submissions better...if that's okay..."

Back submissions? Lacey's first impulse was to take in a gulp. She stood a little stiffer as she backed away a few steps, the color draining from her face as she bit nervously at her lip. Did that really seem like such a good idea, when it was those moves that caused her so much trouble in their match? Lacey wanted to get better at wrestling - but if things went wrong here, she might well injure herself and make things even worse. Even if she didn't, it was still going to hurt...

But, she reminded herself, she couldn't let that stop her. She was only kidding herself if she said she didn't need some sort of push to help her do better. If she kept leaving such glaring holes in her skillset, her opponents would quickly take notice, and she'd only have even more pain and disappointment to look forward to. It was going to hurt, yes, but it'd hurt worse if she didn't step up to the plate. All she could do was hope that Arizona wouldn't take things too far...

"...Whatever you think is going to work-!" she said, clearing her throat. She slipped off her jacket and her headphones and set them in her gym bag before stepping forward to join Arizona on the mats. Deep breaths, she told herself; it'd be okay. She hoped.

"So...er...where do we start?"
