Andrew Murdock
Was Astrid excited? Well, maybe, because after all this should be her first official interview. It was probably a mystery, shrouded in darkness, to many, why the first openweight champion didn't give an interview immediately after the golden belt ended up on her waist, because this could significantly increase her popularity. But Astrid had her own reasons for delaying this moment.
Astrid Arvidsson
The Norwegian woman entered the studio. Today she was dressed in her casual clothes, but despite this her title belt that gives her the right to call herself the best fighter in the federation rested on her shoulder. Astrid took a quick look around. She wasn't a professional in this field, of course, but even she had no trouble noting that the cameras and lights were positioned to get the best possible picture. Taking a deep breath, the champion approached the man sitting on a chair, no doubt awaiting her arrival.
“Andrew Murdock, I suppose?” She asked a rhetorical question, extending her hand to the man for a handshake. “Astrid Arvidsson.” She officially introduced herself, after which she placed her title belt on the table between two chairs, so that it would always be in the camera lenses. “Thank you for the interview invitation and nice to meet you!”
Openweight Title
Following the politeness, Astrid waited for her to be invited to sit on another chair. At the same time, she quickly scanned the interviewer. She knew that this would be the first interview for both of them. And perhaps someone might wonder why Astrid chose this particular man, and not someone who had a wealth of experience in this field. In fact, the answer wasn't a secret. Astrid's philosophy was to give a chance to anyone who she thought deserved it, whether they were a fighter or an interviewer.
Perking up as the subject of the interview entered, Andrew stood up and happily accepted Astrid's handshake. "That's me. Pleasure to meet you, champ." It took quite a lot to impress Andrew, he had met more than a few champions in his day, but he would be lying through his teeth if he said that he didn't have a great deal of admiration and respect for Astrid.
While Andrew wasn't one to be intimidated by much, it was an overwhelming thought to have a champion as his first interview, furthermore, to give the champion her first interview. The fact that Astrid kept her belt resting on her shoulder did little to alleviate Andrew of the thought. Still, the former soldier planned on working well with the Norwegian woman.
"Thank you for coming, Astrid. Take a seat." Sitting back down in his own chair, Andrew invited Astrid to do the same, before taking it from the top with his questions. "So, with how eventful LAW is, a lot's happened since you became openweight champion. I and I'm sure the viewers at home would like to know if you feel you've changed in anyway since becoming champion, or if you have any new outlooks on any part of LAW and wrestling as a whole?"
After finishing the greeting stage with a slight smile, Astrid nodded briefly and sat down on the chair. Thanks to the efforts of her manager, Victoria, she got some information about Andrew in order to know who she would have to communicate with. And, much to the blonde's delight, the man showed himself very respectful towards her, which in turn served as a significant prerequisite for the interview to go well.
“Straight to the business, huh?” Astrid joked because the man asked the first question literally the second the Norwegian woman sat down. “Yes, it's fair to say that a lot has changed." She nodded. “I think first of all I began to understand other people better, especially fighters." Astrid crossed her legs and put her elbows on the armrests, trying to stay relaxed. “I used to perceive other fighters as if in a vacuum, but after going through many matches, including title defenses, now I see that absolutely every woman and man has their own reasons to be here.”
Astrid tapped her fingers on the armrest, remembering the many fighters she had met in the ring and beyond. Alison, Karen, Diana, Kyoko, Clara, Emaline, Piper, Miranda, Katherine, Isabella, Lucas, Astrid O., Kanata, Aurora, Sheena, Alice, Belinda, Yumie, Alizeh, Kureiji and so on. Of course, not all the memories were pleasant for her, but even these unpleasant memories helped her to take a different look at the fighters and what they do.
“You see, some just want fame and fortune, some are looking for acknowledgement, and some sincerely strive to be an example for those who come to the arena every week to watch the matches,” Astrid put her index finger to her chin. “Perhaps not every motivation can be called noble, but I think that if a person believes in something, then they can still be respected for it." Astrid smiled before adding something else to her answer. “In a way, I've grown up and it's helped me become a better person." She glanced briefly at her title belt on the table. “When I first came here, I was a lone wolf, but over time I've made friends that I cherish very much and with whom I want to keep moving forward no matter what happens." She looked at Andrew again. “And of course, LAW itself has also changed noticeably during this time!” She said enthusiastically. “More and more new talents continue to arrive here, but even those who can be called veterans are in no hurry to give up positions, which together contributes to the intense competition that we see now, and isn't that great?”
The slight intimidation of the interview melted away once it became clear that Astrid was very much a woman of good spirits, joking about how quick the interview had started. Andrew chuckled and nodded along, awaiting the champion's answer.
The question seemed to be one that Astrid was interested to answer, getting into great detail about what exactly has changed for her, how the view of the sport had changed for the Norwegian woman. It was nothing that couldn't be expected, but it left Andrew captivated nonetheless. As Andrew leaned forward with his hands clasped and a pleasant smile, he listened intently, taking note of every small gesture, how Astrid tapped her fingers against the chair as she became lost in thought.
The champion concluded with a question of her own, prompting Andrew to respond. "Absolutely. It's fantastic to hear that, Astrid. It could be said that you've reached the peak of LAW as the openweight champion. Really, you look down from a peak at the other wrestlers in the company. I think it's excellent that being champion has changed you so much for the better, and that you view things the way that you do." Straightening up in his chair, the former marine gave the champion an affirming look. "Where many in your position would look down on their competitors, you see the best in the league and all its fighters. I think I can speak for everyone when I say that you're the perfect person to be holding the openweight belt."
Deciding it was time to move onto his next question, Andrew cleared his throat before continuing. "With a lot of your previous matches being quite grandiose, it seems you certainly have a taste for grand spectacles, with matches like the Hell-bound train, Blackjack, Halloween Queen and Russian Chain all being examples of this. What I'm wondering is should LAW fans expect this sort of grandeur from you in the near future? I could imagine a champion vs champion match being quite the event."
“It's been a long time since I've heard such flattery, huh,” Astrid said after Andrew mentioned that she was the perfect person to hold the openweight title. “Thank you, I'm pleased to hear that.”
Astrid was an infinitely proud woman, but she really didn't have the habit of looking down on other fighters. Yes, she had no friends in the ring, only enemies, especially considering that she was a champion, but that didn't mean her blood was a different color. Life has taught her a lot, for example, that self-confidence and arrogance are two completely different things.
For a few moments, the blonde was lost in thoughts, but the man's next question quickly brought her back to reality. Astrid's eyes seemed to shine when she heard the question, and in a fit of emotion she even punched her left palm with her right fist.
“Hell yeah!” She said enthusiastically. “I'm not ashamed to admit that I adore hardcore and unique conditions!" The blonde's lips stretched into a cheeky smile. “Unlike many pathetic cowards, I love hardcore not because it gives me the right to break the rules, you know, eye-scratching, low blows and other shit...” Astrid's right nostril twitched in disgust because she really hated such dirty methods. “I love hardcore for the opportunity to test the limits of my abilities, yes, of course, even in a standard match, you and your opponent can give more than one hundred percent and be exhausted by the end of the match.” She rightly remarked. “But when there's nothing stopping you from fighting outside the ring, using all kinds of objects and surroundings as weapons..." Astrid shivered excitedly. “Damn, it makes my soul tremble!” She barely had the strength not to jump to her feet. “The same goes for the unique conditions, yes, even a standard match can become legendary, but I know for sure that if I fight someone on a freaking train, the audience will remember it for years to come!" Astrid's lavender eyes were filled with enthusiasm. “So you can certainly expect hardcore and unique conditions from me in the future too!”
When it came time to answer the last part of Andrew's question, the smile slowly faded from the blonde's face. In a way, Astrid looked sad at that moment, she even lowered her eyes to the floor. Only when she remembered that they were being filmed by cameras she cleared her throat and her expression became more neutral.
“Well, there was a chance...” she said, shrugging her shoulders. “But this chance has already been missed, unfortunately.” She looked away, as if considering her next words, it was obvious that she was not very pleased to talk about it. “As you correctly pointed out, such an event should be truly grand and unique." Astrid turned her gaze back to the man. “And if such an event happens more than once a year, then hardly anyone would dare to call it truly unique." The blonde shrugged again. “I believe it could have been the match of the millennium, which would have remained in the hearts of the audience forever, but, as I said, there was a chance, but it wasn't me who got that chance.” She had nothing more to add on this issue.
Andrew's words were met with appreciation by Astrid. At the mention of how hard he had heaped on the flattery, the veteran simply shrugged, feeling that he was just being honest.
Astrid seemed distracted momentarily, but Andrew's second question brought the woman back to reality with an enthusiastic cry! Finding himself recoiling slightly, Andrew laughed at Astrid's eagerness. Even more than the first question, Astrid's response was fairly in-line with what one could expect from her, but that wasn't a bad thing as she was clearly passionate about how she answered.
Before, the Norwegian woman answered the final part of the former soldier's question, Andrew interjected. "On a personal note, I find myself agreeing. Your penchant for unique match types is actually incredibly refreshing. It seems some newer additions to the roster are actually taking some notes." Astrid was completely correct in asserting that should she fight someone on a train, no one will ever forget it, and Andrew, for one, would find that rather entertaining.
However, the atmosphere in the room changed when Astrid took note of the last part of Andrew's question. Sadly, the opportunity for such a spectacular spectacle had come and gone, with the champion sadly lamenting that fact. It was a bit saddening for Andrew and the rest of the crew present that such an astonishing spectacle of a match was lost, but Andrew aimed to pick the mood back up. "I see. It's unfortunate the opportunity for a fight like that is lost. Still, with your penchant for spectacle, I don't doubt you could find another way to create the match of the millennium. Though, that remains to be seen, I suppose."
Not wanting to linger on that, or any other topic for too long, the shaggy-haired interviewer moved on to question 3. "Well, anyways, to get a bit more personal, I'm sure the folks at home are extremely curious to know, is the champion dating anyone at the minute?"
“Huh, maybe you're right, all in good time,” Astrid said, shaking her head in the affirmative. “At least that's what I want to believe!”
At the last words, the blonde was slightly inspired, as if she had thrown aside all the heavy thoughts. Yes, she had more than one match under her belt that really deserved to be written into history. But the truth was, Astrid herself wasn't ready to call any of them the millennium match. At the same time, she was not one of those who stood still, she believed that when one road closes in front of you, another one will certainly open. So she will get her millennium match, it's only a matter of time and who her opponent will be.
"Hoooooooooooo..." Astrid drawled, hearing Andrew's next question. "Well..."
A slight blush appeared on the Norwegian woman's cheeks. The joke was that she didn't purposefully try to hide her personal life, not at all. Moreover, she had already heard a similar question, at the press conference before her match against Clara. Astrid was clearly aware of what her fans wanted to hear from her. They needed an intrigue, they needed a reason to gossip, but the thing was... Astrid just couldn't give them what they wanted. Unfortunately.
“Since I joined LAW, I've only had one proper date,” she said honestly, after which she was immersed in pleasant memories for a few moments. “Believe me or not, it was an accident, I was riding my favorite motorcycle at the time and I was in a hurry to get to LAW headquarters to see my manager, as a result of which I almost hit her!” It might have sounded funny, but Astrid, in a fit of shame, covered her face with her right hand for a moment. “She wasn't happy about it, and I felt like I had to make it up to her, so I offered to treat her to dinner.” Astrid's face lit up with a smile because of the pleasant memories. “We went into a cozy restaurant, ate meat, then we took a large portion of a milkshake and strolled along the cherry blossom alley...” completely unaware of this, the Norwegian woman rested her cheek on her palm, indulging in these memories. “And her kiss… I've never felt so...”
It was only at that moment that she realized she had gone too far. Astrid blinked a few times, as if she had come out of a trance. Realizing what she had just said, she smiled broadly, making it clear that all her words were sincere. But, nevertheless, she wasn't going to continue this story.
“But this date didn't get a follow-up,” she said with slight regret. “At least for now." She shrugged her shoulders. “After that...” Astrid paused for a moment, as if debating whether she should tell about it. “Right before that sneaky bitch Emaline ordered her henchman Kureiji to attack me, I was supposed to have a date...” Astrid made an exasperated sound. “Of course, I made Emaline regret it in our match, but...” she looked away. “I'm really sorry that that date didn't take place...” she confessed with sadness in her voice. “That woman... she's one of the few people I have very conflicting feelings for...” Astrid bit her lower lip. “And I really would like to know if something would have worked out with her... now we'll never know... for some reason...”
Astrid closed her eyes for a few moments. Damn. Even after all this time... it was difficult for her to think about her blue-haired rival. She wondered more than once if there was anything she could have done to change the way it all ended. And although Astrid considered herself very strong... she wasn't strong enough to find the answer to that question. And so, unfortunately or fortunately, she could only move on.
“So, no, I'm not dating anyone on a regular basis!” Gathering her thoughts, she finally answered the question, after which she turned to the nearest camera. “If you think you can handle me, you're welcome to try!” She said, after which she first winked and then laughed.
Thankfully, the encouragement the champ received seemed to put her in somewhat better spirits, as Astrid regained her enthusiasm.
Though, that enthusiasm would soon turn to awkwardness and comical hesitation. Andrew let out a small chuckle at Astrid's pausing, and her visible blush. This question was certainly harder to answer than the first two, on a personal level, but one couldn't help but find it amusing at how the Norwegian woman delayed her answer until she couldn't any longer.
An eyebrow raised on the interviewer's face when Astrid mentioned her one date, sure that the fans at home would be rather intrigued by hearing about such an event. Although, once the details were revealed, the former street brawler couldn't stop himself from laughing!
Regaining some composure, Andrew cleared his throat. "Hehe. Sorry about that, Astrid. If it makes you feel any better, I can't say I've ever heard of a date involving a LAW wrestler that started in a normal way." Another laugh had to be stifled when the blonde wrestler realised she got lost in the mushy details of her date's kiss. Still, it was a good answer, despite including a bit too much information, and that was all that mattered to Andrew.
Things turned a bit somber once more, as Astrid recounted another date being unable to transpire. It was unfortunate to hear, but this time, Astrid was perfectly capable of picking up the mood herself, telling the viewers at home they're welcome to try and date her if they think they're up to it. "Well, thank you for sharing, Astrid. I appreciate you being so thorough, and I'll have to tell my niece about that last part. She's a big fan." The interviewer added with a wink of his own and a lighthearted laugh.
With nothing more to add on that subject, they moved on. "Calling back to something I alluded to in the first question, lot's of people believe that there's nothing more to strive for after becoming the open weight champion. I'm curious to know your thoughts on that, and what it is you plan to do after your title reign ends, far off as that may be."
“You can give her my number, I'll be waiting for a call!" Astrid said with a big smile.
The Norwegian woman did not speculate on whether Andrew's words were a joke or not. Astrid was quite a gambler, so she was ready even for a blind date, besides Andrew was gallant with her, and therefore she saw no reason not to give his niece a chance. In a way, it could be something like an additional thank you on her part for this interview.
“Huh!" She chuckled when she heard the next question. “Yes, I've heard that opinion more than once!” She said, nodding affirmatively. “And I strongly disagree with that!”
Astrid leaned back in her chair, crossing her legs again. This question was certainly as serious as the others, but she felt like she had a chance to relax now because she knew exactly what to say about it.
“I think it really depends on the person, I have no doubt that many people really believe that after the openweight title, a fighter has nowhere else to go,” she began to reason. “There is even a grain of truth in this, because my title is what gives me the right to call myself the best in the world.” Astrid bent her right arm at the elbow and turned her palm up. “But let's look at it from the other side.” She suggested. “After conquering Mount Everest, don't you want to conquer other mountains?” Her lavender eyes seemed to glow. “You say that after conquering the highest peak, you won't be able to get the same emotions?” It was a rhetorical question. “I say that this is a bullshit.” She smiled. “Pro wrestling, like our world, is beautiful, and the fact that you have conquered the highest peak does not mean that there is nothing left for you around." Astrid clenched her right palm into a fist. “Pro wrestling is full of opportunities, so it's only important if you're ready to see those opportunities.”
She looked at the belt lying on the table between her and Andrew. Astrid had never been in the habit of looking at the world through rose-colored glasses, she knew for sure that sooner or later this title would no longer belong to her. She doesn't know exactly when this one will come, but she made a promise to herself that the day she loses her title, she won't regret anything.
“I am a descendant of the great Vikings and my ancestors never stopped in their aspirations,” she continued, moving on to the last part of Andrew's question. “And although the openweight championship is still mine and I'm not going to give it to anyone, I can already see new opportunities." The smile on Astrid's face became more cheeky. “Becoming the next heavyweight champion will be my primary goal!” She said confidently. “Besides, I think my passion for hardcore is a great reason to compete for the LAWLESS title!” Astrid wasn't going to stop. “And, in case anyone has forgotten, I have friends who shine in their divisions, I'm talking about Charlotte and Nerissa now, who knows, maybe we'll join forces and put an end to this squad of kittens who hold the tag team championship!” It might seem that she has nothing more to add to this, but... “And imagine...” the blonde pulled her left hand to the side and seemed to start placing words in the air. “Astrid Arvidsson, the first two-time champion in the LAW history...” There was a fire in her eyes, openly saying that her career was not over, her career was just beginning. “I think it's worth it to regain my openweight title at some point in time!”
Much to Andrew's delight, Astrid came out swinging with her next answer, immediately stating her position on the idea presented.
Astrid's thoughts were very personally interesting to Andrew, who had somewhat agreed with the idea previously that there wasn't much else to be done after achieving what the Norwegian woman had.
But as the champion painted a vivid image of the mountain she had climbed and the other peaks she could see from her view at the top, the interviewer found himself with a changed mind on the subject.
"It sounds like your fans have a lot to look forward to. That was certainly a very insightful answer. It's great to know you'll still be striving for great things. I definitely believe if anyone was capable of being the first two-time champion then it's you."
"Anyways, what do you think we can expect from the next title defense?" Andrew continued, wanting to keep the pace up. "A simple question but I figured it was worth hearing your answer."
“I'll do my best to meet your expectations!” The blonde said with a smile to Andrew's words of support.
By some signs, she realized that when Andrew asked the previous question, he was also on the side of those who believe that there is nothing after the openweight title for a fighter. But it seems the Norwegian woman has managed to change his mind on this matter to some extent. Of course, she was not one of those who tried to impose their point of view, Astrid rightly believed that everyone had the right to believe in what they wanted. At the same time, she was pleased that her point of view helped Andrew look at the issue differently.
“If only I got paid every time I hear that question, huh!" Astrid joked. “Well...”
She had to lose herself in her thoughts for a few moments. Of course, she wanted to be open and honest with both Andrew and the audience. But even a passionate woman like her sometimes has to choose her words carefully, this was just one of those cases.
“I have some thoughts on that, of course,” she began smoothly. “But I'm afraid that if I share them, it will kill all the intrigue, and that's not what I want." Astrid put both hands on the armrests. “But I think I can tell you about things that are not a secret and that will give the audience some food for thought.” The blonde has become a little more serious. “Yumie Hayashi defeated one of the best fighters I know and my best friend, Charlotte, to earn herself a title shot." Astrid put her fingertips together before continuing. “And as many people probably remember, Alizeh Midori defeated Lily Menage, who is a member of my manager's team and a truly outstanding fighter, there was no title shot at stake in that match, but Alizeh earned her title shot for my belt with this match." Astrid tilted her head slightly forward, and a mysterious smile appeared on her lips. “Besides, there is one woman who, in my opinion, deserves another chance to win my title, she proved it with her last matches, but whether she gets her chance depends only on her.” Astrid specifically did not mention the name, keeping it a secret. “And something tells me that we will soon find out if she is worthy to try her hand against me again!” The champion leaned back in her chair. “As a result, we have three contenders, two of whom are guaranteed to get their title shot because I am a person of my word!” She said with all seriousness. “How exactly and when will this happen?” She asked a rhetorical question. “Time will tell, but I guarantee you that you will find no less, and perhaps much more exciting sight than in all my previous title defenses!”
It was interesting to note that while Astrid cracked a joke, she was clearly stalling and thinking what to say in response. Evidently, the passionate viking descendent had to choose her words carefully, lest she spoil some surprises.
Astrid named some rather impressive and well known fighters, people who would go down in LAW's history and if given title shots against the champion, would certainly create some matches for the ages. "Those are certainly some matches to look forward to. I've followed Alizeh's career quite closely. I'm certainly eager to see that title shot happen, and I can imagine many viewers at home are, too."
However, Astrid's answer would only get more interesting at the mention of a mystery fighter, soon to have her worthiness of a title shot revealed. "Very interesting. I'm sure you'll have all your fans speculating on just who that third contender could be."
Not having any time to waste on said speculation, Andrew continued. "It's no secret you're the descendent of vikings, and that you aim to make your ancestors proud. I'm wondering how close to that you feel?"
“Ah, you've prepared well," Astrid admitted, nodding respectfully at Andrew. “It's nice to know that people are interested in my origin and my attitude towards it.”
The Norwegian woman remembered well that at the beginning of her career, many considered her belief in the ancient Scandinavian gods to be nothing more than a public image for the ring. However, Astrid's unwavering and straightforward nature quickly made it clear to everyone that this was no joke. Yes, it was unusual, yes, it was too old-fashioned, but she really believed with all her heart that her fate was inextricably linked with such great gods as Odin.
“I was named after my distant ancestor, Astrid,” the blonde decided to tell. “She was a great shield maiden and one of the best warriors Scandinavia has ever seen.” Astrid recalled with a smile the stories that had been passed down from generation to generation in her family. “One day, when most of the men and women went on a raid into the Anglo-Saxon lands, her village was attacked by exiles, skogarmaors as we call them, there were too few warriors and shield maidens in the village to repel this treacherous attack...” Her lavender eyes seemed to be filled with flames. “But then Astrid took her shield and her sword, she went out to the exiles, calling on all her companions to fight for their land, for everything they love." She clenched her fists involuntarily. “Astrid single-handedly killed five warriors, and then defeated the leader of the skogarmaors, putting the rest of the exiles to flight.” She had to take a deep breath to calm her emotions. “The village survived and the exiles never set foot on their land again, it was a great victory, but this victory was won at the cost of Astrid's life, who died of her wounds.” The Norwegian woman closed her eyes for a few moments. “On that day, people mourned the great warrior, the heroine who gave her life for what she loved.” A smile appeared on the blonde's face. “That same day, the gods were feasting in Valhalla, and Astrid was among them, telling stories of her victories, of her life as a free woman who fought for what was dear to her heart.”
After finishing the story, which was considered a real relic in her family, the champion took a short pause. It was a legend... a myth that had only indirect evidence. But it didn't matter to her. That was what she believed in.
“Do I deserve a place in Valhalla?” She asked a question that didn't require an answer. “Do I deserve to be among the gods and my great ancestors?” She continued. “Do I deserve them to be proud of me?” She repeated Andrew's main question. “I do not know, it is not for me to judge this, I can only go forward and do what I am doing." Astrid pointedly punched herself on the shoulder. “I'm not fighting for wealth and fame, I'm fighting because I want everyone to know that if you believe in something, then you should never give up.” She said. “Even if I have to fight alone against the whole world, I won't be afraid to do it." Astrid smiled broadly. “If you can find the strength to overcome fear, if you don't back down from the inevitable setbacks along the way, you can always make your dream come true!" The champion took another deep breath. “Are my great ancestors proud of me?” She repeated the question once again. “I don't know, but I know that my parents are proud of me, my friends are proud of me, my fans are proud of me and my manager, Victoria, is proud of me, she supported me at every step of my career, for which I am eternally grateful." Astrid smiled broadly again, showing the sincerity of her feelings. “And as long as I'm here, in Midgard, that's more than enough for me!”
In response to Andrew's question, Astrid complimented the research he had put in. The former marine nodded in appreciation. "Thank you. Actually, I was happy to research that subject. Vikings have always interested me."
As her answer, the Norwegian woman weaved a vivid tale of her namesake, the myth of a shield maiden named Astrid. The cameras captured every moment of Astrid's passion champion's body language, the involuntary clenching of her fists gave the champion away. Even for a woman as boisterous as Astrid, her demeanour was intense and fiery as she regained this tale.
A concrete answer was clearly difficult to give for such a grand question, but Astrid sure hoped that she was earning her place in Valhalla and making her ancestors proud. Andrew couldn't help but smile, Astrid's reply showed exactly why she was an excellent champion.
"You paint a vivid picture. If you want my personal opinion, if you're not worthy to be in Valhalla then no one is." Andrew insisted with a friendly thumbs up, always happy to encourage great fighters and hear of their motives.
"Well, I can't say this question is as extravagant, but how long to you aim to hold your title?"
“I can only hope that the gods' opinion is the same as yours!" Astrid said in a joking manner and also gave a thumbs up.
In fact, before the interview, the Norwegian woman was worried about whether she would be able to be open with Andrew and the audience. She was no longer the lone wolf she was before LAW, but it was still difficult for her to reveal the details of her life, usually she shared such things only with very close people. But a relaxed atmosphere and Andrew's gentlemanly behavior helped her show trust, so now Astrid seemed like an open book. Perhaps for the first time in her life.
“I aim to lose it on the next show to a random fighter,” Astrid said, after which her lips twisted into a sarcastic smile. “I guess no one will answer this question that way." Astrid gave a short laugh. “Well, look, some champion with an overblown ego would say that they aim to keep their title forever." Astrid pointedly curled up one finger. “A more neutral answer to this question would be something like I aim to keep this title as long as I can." She curled her other finger. “Well, the most honest and rational answer at the same time will be the most boring, namely I don't know how long I can hold it.”
Astrid curled her third finger and then shrugged. It really was one of those questions that is difficult to give an honest answer to. But, of course, the blonde wasn't going to leave this question unanswered.
“The truth is, I don't look at the world through rose-colored glasses,” she said. “I know that I won't be champion forever and that sooner or later, the day will come when this title will no longer belong to me." Astrid paused briefly and then raised her index finger. “BUT!” She said with a special intonation. “As many might have noticed, I've faced truly incredible fighters in every one of my title defenses.” Astrid gave her due to all her rivals. “Literally in every match, each of them was just one step away from becoming the next openweight champion, just a little bit so to speak.” The blonde wasn't shy about admitting it, besides, she still had something to add about it. “But exactly that just a little bit more makes me the strongest in the world, because none of the contenders was able to overcome this barrier!” She said with pride. “I don't want to fight weak opponents who will just give me a nice score, I'm the first openweight champion and it is my duty to give this title stories, to give it a legacy that will pass on to the next champion.” The Norwegian woman glanced briefly at the title belt on the table. “I don't know when I will meet an opponent who will be able to overcome that just a little bit more barrier.” She confessed, and then looked Andrew in the eye. “But I made a promise to myself that I would lose only on the day when I would have nothing to regret, when my opponent would be a woman worthy of becoming the next openweight champion." Astrid took a deep breath. “I know I'm going to lose someday, but that doesn't mean I'm aiming for it!" The blonde turned her head to the side, glancing at the camera. “And if you think you can stand up to the Golden Dragon, then I'm waiting for you in the ring!” She addressed all the fighters who will watch this interview.
The interview had kept a pleasant atmosphere all throughout, with both the champion and interviewer giving each other a thumbs up. Andrew was glad to be getting along with the champion, as well as creating a consistently engaging interview. He hoped Astrid was feeling the same.
The quick-witted joke the Norwegian woman made in response to the next question got a hearty laugh out of the former marine. "Well, no one can say your career hasn't been full of surprises. I suppose this is just another in the pile, then." Andrew joked, going along with Astrid's sarcasm as though it were her true and final answer. When the time came for the viking descendent to actually give her honest thoughts, it seemed there was quite a bit of uncertainty at first, fingers subtly coiling with each new sentence.
Visibly steeling herself, Astrid stayed realistic but her enthusiasm returned, speaking highly of the foes she's faced and the kind of fighters she wanted to encounter. Nodding, as someone with great passion for combat sports, Andrew understood completely.
"That's a very interesting mindset to have as a champion. It makes sense that you'd only want to face the best fighters, and it's admirable that you pay respects to each of your foes. Like a lot of your other answers, it sounds like you're giving the fans plenty of reason to be excited." Andrew assessed. It was very easy to get caught up in Astrid's passion, it was a good quality for a wrestler to have. Each answer given just provided more reason for fans to get hyped, including Andrew himself.
"It obviously can't be easy to be the openweight champion. With how much competition it invites, you surely have to out in 100× the work of the average fighter to hold onto that title. With that in mind, I'm wondering what exactly keeps you motivated and helps you going in spite of how hard it is."
Astrid bent her right arm at the elbow and rested her cheek on her palm, thinking about Andrew's next question. It seemed like a simple question, but in fact the Norwegian woman didn't have a simple answer. She partially answered this question during her answers to other questions, but it definitely wasn't the most complete picture.
“All my life, I've been interested in one question,” she began. “Where is the limit of my abilities?" Astrid ran her index finger along her chin. “I remember perfectly my first victory in a street fight, nothing serious, just school bullies, but then I asked myself, how far can I go?” Astrid was lost in her memories. “I remember my first victory in MMA sparring, I remember my first victory in an amateur match, I remember my first victory in a professional match." Astrid smiled ironically. “I remember how I lost my first European MMA championship due to disqualification.” It seemed like an eternity had passed since that moment, but Astrid remembered everything as well as if it was yesterday. “To test myself, I went to the Greenland Eskimos, where I lived for six months in the middle of an icy desert.” Goosebumps ran over Astrid's skin when she remembered that wild cold. “I remember how I won the European MMA championship on the second attempt." The smile on her face widened. “And then I found myself here, in LAW, among the strongest women on the planet.”
Astrid had a choice between signing with LAW or with the biggest MMA promotion, which would surely make her rich and famous. But money and fame worried her much less than the answer to the question that had haunted her all her life.
“I'm not one of those who stops before difficulties,” she said. “If there is an obstacle in front of me, I will overcome it, no matter how many attempts I need to do it.” Her lavender eyes seemed to sparkle. “My career in LAW consists not only of victories, three women managed to beat me, namely Karen Starring, Aurora Lund and Katherine Hart.” Astrid, without embarrassment, listed the women who turned out to be stronger than her at the time. “However, Karen became living proof that if I couldn't do something, then I will do it next time because she lost when she came for my title!" Astrid turned her head towards the camera. “Aurora, Katherine, consider it a message, our business is not over yet, and the next time we meet, victory will be mine!”
The blonde turned her head back to Andrew, after which she scratched her head slightly in embarrassment. She herself did not expect that she would become so talkative today. However, she couldn't deny that sharing the details of her life was, in a way, enjoyable.
“Although, of course, this is not the only motivation that makes me get up in the morning,” she admitted. “When the high management chose me as the first openweight champion, I felt a responsibility that I had never felt before in my life.” Astrid has become more serious. “As I have already mentioned, it is my duty to give this title stories, as well as to create a legacy that will pass on to the next champion.” She put her hand on the title belt lying on the table. “Only the strongest should be the champion, so each of my title defenses may be my last, I understand that, but I would rather die than let a woman like Emaline or Piper become the next openweight champion.” She said with a hint of fury in her voice. “I feel responsible to the federation, to my fans and all pro wrestling fans, they know that I'm the best and they know that the next champion should be a worthy woman.” She summed it up. “That's why I wake up in the morning thinking that I want to meet their expectations because they deserve it!”
In response to Andrew's curiosity regarding her motivations, Astrid seemed to search deep within herself to tell the story of the Golden Dragon and why she now fights.
How Astrid described everything from her first victory in a fight to competing in the MMA and eventually living in an icy desert was totally captivating to the entire crew of staff in the room. The look in the champion's eye conveyed how vividly she remembered each experience as she told her life story. It was almost as though Andrew was gazing into the Golden Dragon's memories.
When Astrid's monologue came to the present day, she spoke of a feeling of responsibility and aiming to remain the strongest, until a wrestler worthy enough defeated the viking descendent.
"That's very intriguing. I'm sure it makes your fans happy to know that cheering you on really pays off." Andrew inquired, finding Astrid's motivation was nothing short of admirable. "And it sounds like with that mindset, you'll be holding onto that title for a while longer to be sure."
"Well, with that in mind, what advice would you give to the many worthy fighters in LAW that are aiming for the top? Plenty of LAW wrestlers could be called veterans or rising stars, so what advice would you give to them?"
“Advice…" Astrid repeated thoughtfully.
Perhaps not everyone, but surely many people thought that Astrid had some kind of secret formula for success, because she became the one who managed to win the most prestigious title of LAW in an incredibly short period of time, namely a little more than a year since the beginning of her career. But the truth was that there is no secret formula that is guaranteed to bring you success.
“I can advise you to never forget that everything depends on you,” she finally said. “Anyone can doubt a fighter: other fighters, fans, friends, even parents, literally anyone." Astrid clasped her palms together and looked seriously into the nearest camera. “But if a fighter doubts themselves, then this is the end.” This philosophical thought was an integral part of her life, so she decided to share it with everyone. “Doubt inevitably leads to defeat, so you should never doubt yourself." Astrid allowed herself to smile and soften her tone a little. “Remember that your story is only in your hands, that only you decide when this story begins, how this story goes and when this story ends." The blonde pointed at herself with her thumb, which was her signature gesture. “I'm a living proof that it doesn't matter who you are a newbie or a veteran, if you are ready to break down any obstacles on the way, then you will certainly reach the top!”
The advice Astrid had to give wasn't anything too complex, or anything detailed about how to behave in the ring or as a champion. Despite that, in Andrew's opinion, it was very valuable. Having had to pull himself up by his bootstraps at an early age to make it in the military and in combat sports, it was a mentality that the interviewer found himself relating to and admiring.
"I think that's pretty admirable advice to give. I think most would hope for advice on how to become and act as a champion, but what you have to say is much more considerate. Most wrestlers will never be champion, so it's thoughtful of you to lend advice to all fighters in LAW. Those few words may just inspire some new combatants to join the roster."
Without much more to say regarding the Golden Dragon's answer, Andrew moved on to the next question he had lined up. "Well, we've discussed quite a bit about Astrid Arvidsson in the ring, but stepping outside of that area for a moment, what do you do in your spare time to relax? You've mentioned that you spend a considerable amount of time in the gym, but beyond that, how is your daily life?"
If Astrid had a formula for success, she would be happy to share it. But the reality is harsh. Of course, if you were born under a lucky star and everything falls into your hands just like that, then it's cool. However, in most cases, in order to achieve something, you must continuously work on yourself, only then can you become the best. That's exactly what Astrid wanted to convey with her answer to the question.
“Huh!" The blonde chuckled. “Well, it's true that I spend most of my free time at the gym!” She bent her right arm at the elbow and placed her left hand on the bicep. “I need these guns in full combat readiness in order to remain the best in the world!”
Astrid considered it her sacred duty to keep fit, but after she became a champion, she literally tripled her efforts. She wasn't the best at absolutely everything, but she tried to work on her strengths and didn't forget about her weaknesses, because that's the only way she could continue to defend her title.
“But of course, my life doesn't consist only of the ring and the gym!” She confirmed with a smile. “Tell you what, I love my friends, I love delicious food and I love good alcohol!" Astrid pointedly bent three fingers in a row. “And you know what, these three things work great together!" Astrid laughed good-naturedly. “When I want to relax, I take Charlotte and Nerissa and we go to some cozy bar together!" Astrid raised her head slightly, as if recalling something. “Nerissa and I used to joke about Charlotte because she drinks very little, but lately Nerissa has also started drinking a lot less for some reason, but the main thing is that we still have fun together!”
She paused briefly. Talking about food and drinks seemed to turn on some parts of her mind and Astrid felt very thirsty. She quickly picked up the glass from the table, took a few short sips of water, and then continued their conversation.
“But of course, this is not my only way to have a good evening!” She said. “If you didn't find me at the bar in the evening, then most likely I'm at home, lying on the couch with a bucket of ice cream and watching some TV show!” She admitted with a laugh. “Oh, did the ice cream bucket sound unexpected?" Astrid spread her arms wide. “I have a sweet tooth, there's nothing I can do about it, the good thing is that my love of the gym goes well enough with my love of sweets, so I'm not getting fat, huh!”
The Norwegian woman clasped her hands on the back of her head and leaned back in her chair. Hardly anyone will find her daily life interesting enough, but who knows. Anyway, she promised herself to be honest with Andrew and the audience, so…
“I also love tinkering!" She said, after which she smiled nostalgically. “My father taught me not only how to swing my fists, but also how to fix anything if it has an engine!” It was nice for her to remember the moments she spent with her father. “So I spend a lot of time with my bike to keep it in perfect condition!" Removing her hands from the back of her head, Astrid returned them to the armrests. “As the LAW champion, I also have the responsibility to attend all kinds of events, I enjoy spending time with the fans." Astrid nodded gratefully at the camera, addressing all the viewers. “In addition, I try to participate in charity, I used to think that financial support was more than enough, my friend Nerissa made it clear to me that there are other equally important things, so I periodically visit orphanages and hospitals.” Astrid didn't even try to make a special emphasis on it to look better, but it was no secret, photos from her visits to orphanages and hospitals have been circulating on the Internet for a long time. “And of course I'm no stranger to the most ordinary things like going to the movies or shopping, oh oh oh!" Astrid's eyes suddenly lit up. “I also really love Japanese hot springs and spas!!!” She said with undisguised enthusiasm. “This is probably one of the best ways to relax, so for those who have never tried it, I highly recommend it!”
The question seemed to surprise the Golden Dragon, but Andrew would bet that her big fans were on the edge of their seats waiting for an answer, desperate to get more insight on their favourite wrestler.
When the answer was finally delivered in Astrid's usual boisterous tone, Andrew could help but laugh. "Spoken like a true viking! You sound like your in Valhalla already!" The interviewer had to joke with the champion. The stories of her friends weren't anything too exceptional, but it was rather charming to hear about and would still likely be enjoyable for fans to hear about, possibly even encouraging some to hit the bars in hopes of finding their favourite LAW wrestler. What Astrid did at home wasn't anything too special either, but it was funny to picture the incredibly ripped openweight champion with a whole tub of ice cream in her hand.
What Astrid had to say regarding her hobbies was much more interesting. "Oh, I didn't expect to hear that. Sounds like your father made sure you were instilled with quite a practical skill." Not only was Astrid skilled, but exceptionally kind, mentioning her charity work. "That's incredibly admirable, even more so than your skills as a fighter." Andrew had to compliment. The mention of hot springs and spas was interesting, though expected, considering how much time Astrid spent at the gym.
"Circling back to an earlier question and answer you gave us, how do you imagine your ideal partner to be?"
“My who?” Astrid asked, blinking rapidly a few times. “Aaaaaahhhh...”
The Norwegian woman's cheeks quickly began to take on a reddish hue. Just like twenty minutes ago when they were talking about her dates. Due to the fact that her personal life was definitely not the best role model, she felt considerable embarrassment at the moment. Surely someone will even find it funny. The great Astrid Arvidsson, unshakeable in the ring, but blushing because of questions about her personal life.
"Akhem..." she even had to clear her throat before she could speak. “Well... to be honest, I've never even thought about something like this, so now I have to answer this question not only for you, but also for myself.” She confessed, after which the blush on her cheeks became even brighter. “I think it's no secret that I feel equally good around a woman and a man.” She started. “But I think the ideal partner would be a woman, it's a little more difficult for me to maintain an... hmmm... emotional connection with men." Astrid shrugged her shoulders. “How do I see this woman?" She asked herself a question. “Strong and resilient." She said, and then the corners of her lips lifted, as if Astrid finally felt confident in her answer. “You know, I'm the kind of person who will defend my position to the last, let's say...” Astrid thought for a moment about which example she should give. “Let's say Nerissa says she wants to go to a bar on the outskirts, and I say I want to go to a bar on the docks!" Astrid's smile turned cocky. “I'll grow into the ground like a tree and will insist to the end on the idea of going to the place I chose, huh!" She chuckled. “But if we're talking about a partner, then I don't want my partner to constantly agree with me!" The blonde bit her lower lip slightly. “I think in this case everything will quickly become too boring.” She said. “That's why I want my partner, like me, to be able to defend her point of view!" Astrid nodded, anticipating the question. “Yes, of course, it's going to lead to arguments between us, and that's how I see it." Astrid's eyes sparkled. “I defend my point of view, she defends her point of view, no one wants to give in to each other, then she takes a step forward, our breasts press against each other, she tilts her head forward and with a cheeky smile offers me to settle this in the ring!”
Astrid lifted her head slightly, using all the power of her imagination to imagine this scene. Oh damn, even in fantasy it was hot as hell. Yes, that's exactly the kind of partner she needs. A calm and measured life was not for her, Astrid was sure of it.
“I'm an infinitely proud and passionate woman, so my partner should be the same, I think this is the most important thing for me!” Astrid summed up, after which she thought for a few moments. “As for the less important details... well, lush breasts sound good, although of course hardly anyone can compete with my babies." Astrid playfully shook her breasts. “Hair color is not something fundamental for me, but if she is blonde, then this is definitely a victory for me.”
Astrid's ideal partner wasn't really something Andrew felt like commenting on. This one was really just for fun, though it was slightly eye-roll inducing that Astrid more or less just described herself.
Still, there was a certain charm in seeing the openweight champion be so conceited she would like her partner to have many of the same trait as herself, blonde, headstrong, a lover of alcohol. Not to mention, it was rather humorous to hear that the Golden Dragon wanted heated arguments that would conclude in the ring.
"Sounds like the place you'd be most likely to meet this ideal partner would be the ring then, huh? I suppose that's fitting for the first ever openweight champion." Andrew observed, not that it was a hard conclusion to come to.
"Anyways, that one was just for fun. Our next question is back to the wrestling scene. How do you feel about the current title scene in LAW? It's obvious there's been quite a lot of shakeups lately with you of course being crowned the openweight champion after years of that title being empty, not to mention all three weight classes getting new champions and a tournament coming up to decide the hentai champion. I'm also curious to hear what you think of the rumours that several new belts are being added."
“True!” Astrid agreed with Andrew's comment after her answer.
The next question was not as delicate as the previous one, but it was very important. The Norwegian woman took a short sip of water, and then crossed her legs, preparing to talk about what many considered to be a very painful topic when it comes to LAW.
“I'm well aware that opinions on this matter vary greatly,” she began in a measured voice. “As for me, I think the situation on the title scene is probably better than ever." Astrid paused briefly, then shrugged her shoulders. “But if these words sound too loud, then let me say that things are much better on the title scene now than they were before the end of Apex.”
Until today, the blonde had no reason to say this out loud, but she really believed that things were much better in the federation now than before. She hadn't spent much time here compared to the honored veterans, but she could say with confidence that a lot had changed for the better since she signed a contract and started her career at LAW.
“I think I'll skip the openweight title because I've already expressed my feelings about it,” she continued. “So let's look at the other titles." Astrid smiled. “Kyoko became the middleweight champion shortly before the end of Apex, and I think only an idiot can say that the middleweight division has not improved during her reign.” Astrid put her fingers together in a lock. “I cannot say that I approve of her methods, which she began to apply in recent defenses in order to save the title.” Astrid said a little bit sadly. “I'm not ashamed to say that I know her, and I'm sure she's capable of defending her title without the involvement of her stable and other unpleasant tricks." The blonde frowned slightly. “Maybe she's just... mmmm... no, I'll keep these thoughts to myself, in any case, Kyoko gave the middleweight division a second wind, it's pointless to argue with that." She smiled again. “Besides, my best friend, Charlotte Ravel', will soon face Kyoko in the ring with the middleweight title on the line, so we have another match waiting for you that you won't want to miss!”
The Norwegian woman paused briefly to drink some water, after which she continued.
“I was a little sad when Astrid Ostberg lost her heavyweight title,” she said, switching to another title. “I consider her to be a living legend and I'm sincerely sorry that the match ended this way, because in fact she did not lose, Alaina pinned Katherine to win, not Astrid." The blonde sighed heavily. “On the other hand, Alaina is a living proof that age is not an obstacle for a good fighter.” She nodded in the affirmative. “Many people probably think it's time for her to retire, but if that's the case, why is she still a champion?” It was a rhetorical question. “If you think her place is at home with the kids, not in the ring, then come and beat her!" Astrid grinned. “Oh, you can't? Then shut up!"
Clearing her throat, Astrid decided that she should speed up her answer a little or they would be here for the rest of the day.
“As for the lightweight title... well, I guess any sane person is glad that the era of title defenses involving jobbers is a thing of the past,” she said sincerely. “I know things aren't going too smoothly for Annie right now, but you have to understand that she has a lot of responsibility on her shoulders.” Astrid has become more serious. “She has to return to the former greatness of the lightweight division, so I personally wish her only good luck in this." Astrid took a short sip of water before continuing. “The hentai title didn't please us in any way after Rei's defeat, unfortunately, as a result, the title was vacated." The Norwegian woman shrugged. “You know, I think it's good that the tournament will determine a new champion, and I can only hope that this woman will have a lot of strength to actively defend her title." Astrid smiled. “By the way, my friend Lunara is participating in this tournament, I believe in you, baby!" Astrid winked at the nearest camera. “Tag team titles... a stumbling block, right?” She asked ironically. “How long have these kittens been holding titles?” A rhetorical question. “They are the only ones left from the previous generation of champions, and although I have a lot to respect Katherine for, because she was able to beat me, I believe that if they want to remain champions, then they should actively defend their titles!” Astrid wasn't going to hide what she thought about it. “About the same applies to the LAWLESS title, I know that many underestimate this title, considering it something insignificant, but I fundamentally disagree with this!” As Astrid mentioned earlier, she would love to fight for the LAWLESS title. “I believe that everything depends only on the champion and that it depends only on the champion whether the rest of the fighters and the audience will consider the title something meaningful, so I think the current champion should have put in a little more effort!” She shrugged her shoulders. “I'll leave the loser title without comment if you don't mind...”
After a short sip of water, Astrid finally got to the last part of Andrew's question, namely the rumors.
“I guess we're talking about the mixed title and the smother title,” she said, putting her index finger to her chin. “Generally speaking, I approve of the introduction of new titles because I think it raises the level of competition among fighters." Astrid nodded affirmatively several times. “And if we talk about each title directly, then the mixed title is out of my interests." The blonde shrugged. “I only had one mixed match and it was for personal reasons, I'm not afraid to fight men, but I prefer to fight women, it seems much hotter to me, I confess!" Astrid laughed. “The smother title... huh, an interesting case, of course, this has always been popular, but over the past year, interest in this has increased many times, so adding such a title to our federation is more than justified!” She thought for a moment. “I won't say that this title would be my primary goal, BUT!” The Norwegian woman smiled mysteriously. “I think me and my babies could smother any woman in our path, so who knows, maybe you'll see me with this title in the future, huh!”
With the conversation returning to the title scene, Astrid's passion was bursting at the seams. It was evident that the Norwegian woman, passionate as she was in all aspects, was clearly most eager to speak on wrestling and the title scene more than anything else.
Listing off each championship besides two, it was intriguing to hear the Golden Dragon be able to separate her personal thoughts on the champions as people and instead view them purely as wrestlers who benefit the company. Andrew was certainly more of a fan than the Lawless and Tag Team champions than Astrid was, but the interviewer did find himself agreeing in regards to Kyoko and Annie as middleweight and lightweight champions respectively.
Astrid's personal comments about each title were mostly to be expected. It wasn't anything Andrew found much to comment on, but her assessment of the 2 new championships as concepts was rather agreeable.
"I think your perspective on the two new championships is very insightful. As someone who beat the competition to achieve what's arguably the most prestigious championship in LAW, I think it means a lot to hear you say that the new championships are a good thing that will further provoke intense competition among the wrestlers of LAW."
"The next question I have is something that some may find vague, but I'm wondering how you feel that after a match, two opponents form a unique connection. Some in LAW go by with plenty of one-offs, but others find themselves to be rivals or friends with almost every fighter they meet. So, I would like to ask, what kind of connection do you form with your various foes, if any at all?"
It wasn't hard to guess from Andrew Astrid's face that the man didn't agree with every one of her opinions about the title scene. However, the interviewer decided to keep a gentlemanly silence, did not comment on Astrid's words in any way. She did not object to this approach, besides, as she said before giving an answer, opinions on this matter vary greatly.
“Oh, damn!” The blonde exclaimed with a glint in her eyes after Andrew's next question. “Perhaps this is the thing that I agree with the most!” She nodded several times in the affirmative. “I firmly believe that even one match is enough for an invisible, perhaps barely perceptible, but still connection to appear between the fighters.”
She had discussed this more than once with her best friends, who, like Astrid herself, also shared this idea. In the world of pro wrestling, absolutely every fighter strives to get to the top, and when everyone is willing to put everything they have on the line for their dreams, it always creates connections.
“Well, what can I say...” Astrid put her hands on the back of her head and lifted her head slightly. “Aurora and Katherine, when I think about them and remember our matches, I only feel an irresistible desire to meet them again to show how much stronger I have become since the last meeting, for me it is a matter of principle to surpass them both!" Astrid bit her lower lip for a moment before continuing. “I feel almost the same way about Karen, now our score is equal, but I'm trying to tilt it in my favor...” the blonde paused briefly to suppress the blush that formed on her cheeks. “But that's not the only thing I feel about Karen, we have something more in common and I would really like to understand what is it... but... maybe it's too late.” She sighed sadly that she didn't focus on it, instead continuing to talk. “I feel nothing but anger towards dirty bitches like Emaline and Piper, yes, they're both strong fighters, I respect them for that, but that doesn't mean I won't kick their asses again at the first opportunity!" Astrid chuckled, and then her voice became a little softer. “You know, sometimes it's hard for me to understand exactly how I feel about my opponent, Clara Gaster is a great example of that." Astrid took her hands off the back of her head and leaned forward slightly. “She's a great fighter, I felt it in all its glory during our match, she really sincerely wants to become a champion...” Astrid thought for a moment. “However, I think she's missing something, and since I believe in her talent and her potential, I tried to help her find that something.” It may have sounded mysterious, but Astrid wasn't going to go into details. “The rest is up to her!” She concluded the story about her attitude towards Clara, after which she smiled broadly. “Oh, I wouldn't be completely honest if I didn't tell you about Isabella!” She even licked her lips. “The way we met at the Madison Hotel deserves a real movie, it's been a long time since I've met such a strong and passionate woman, I think that's what connected us!” Astrid turned to the nearest camera. “Isa, if you want to dress up in bunny suits and roll around in the ring again, you know my number!" She winked playfully at the camera. “And of course I can't help but mention Kyoko!” Astrid clenched her fists in a fit of emotion. “We… hmmm… we’re like an unstoppable force and an immovable object I guess, huh!” There was excitement in Astrid's eyes. “When I get into another confrontation with her, I don't see a shadow of doubt in her eyes, she always thinks she can beat me!” Astrid clenched her fists so hard that her knuckles cracked. “And I'm only happy to prove the opposite to her, because I'm damn turned on by the very idea of competing with a woman who doesn't accept such a result as defeat!” Having calmed down a bit, she decided to sum up some results. “I would not say that I consider any of my rivals a friend." She shrugged her shoulders. “We are mostly connected by passion, not friendship.” It was the most honest conclusion. “But in any case, I think my relationships with women like Kyoko, Isabella and Clara are more friendly than hostile.”
Just by the expression on the champ's face it was clear she was dying to answer this one. As Andrew had come to learn over the course of this interview, when Astrid's really wants to answer a question, it will be quite the answer in length and insight into the thoughts of the Golden Dragon.
Astrid had more than a few people to comment on, firmly believing that every fighter formed a deep connection, no matter how slight their interactions may have been.
Some of Astrid's words were kind, some rather provocative. Andrew found himself chuckling at the latter. What the interviewer found most interesting was Astrid's mention of Kyoko. (though most of the crew on the interview set were fixating on the thought of an Isabella rematch) Astrid's resolve was truly remarkable, and her statements about Kyoko made it clear that foes who displayed the same passion were the ones most worthy of the champion's time.
The simple shrug and statement that concluded the Norwegian's thoughts on the matter were unexpected. Listening intently, the former Marine found himself leaning forward in his seat. "Hmm, I didn't expect that last part. I figured the more the merrier for you down at the bar. A lot of wrestlers seem to have rivals as best friends nowadays. Though, I suppose it's easier to stay focused on beating someone when you don't particularly like them."
"In any case, let's get a bit more specific about a particular event. When you were named the inaugural openweight champion, what were the emotions you felt at that moment? What went through your head? Additionally, disregarding your sensational Apex run, have you ever had any doubt in your mind that you deserved the title?"
The next question did not come as a surprise to Astrid. It might be her first experience with an interview, but it was obvious that such a question would come sooner or later. Besides, the blonde didn't have to think about the answer, after so many questions people could probably guess what she would say about this.
“I remember everything as if it happened yesterday, huh!” She confessed. “When I was informed that the top management had decided to entrust the openweight title to me, I experienced a whole bunch of emotions!” Astrid lifted her head slightly, recalling those feelings. “I don't know if this will be a revelation for many, but I was surprised to some extent." Astrid spread her arms to the sides before explaining what exactly she meant. “It is impossible to question the fact that many outstanding women took part in the Apex." She tilted her head slightly. “I think it would be fair to compare it all to a bunch of precious stones." The blonde put her finger to her chin. “When you look at rubies, sapphires, diamonds, topazes and so on, it's hard for you to believe what's happening, every stone seems incredible to you." She returned her hands to the armrests. “By the end of the Apex, only the most outstanding women of the federation remained, each of whom could become the first openweight champion." The Norwegian woman's lips curled into a smile. “I know that many people still harbor resentment, thinking that they deserve to be in my place!” Astrid recalled the social media hype after her coronation. “But if the federation's management made a mistake by entrusting the title to me, then how could I defend my title six times in a row against the best women in the roster?”
Astrid gave a short laugh, making it clear that she still adheres to a very simple principle. If you think she's unworthy of holding the openweight title, then come and get it. If you can.
“So, yes, I was surprised to some extent because I wasn't the only contender,” the blonde continued. “But first of all I was happy!” Astrid stuck out her index finger, making it clear that she wanted to clarify her words. “Not just because I became a champion, but because at that moment, truly unique opportunities opened up in front of me!" Astrid clenched her palm into the fist. “As you remember, when I started my career in LAW, many people thought I was just an upstart with my head in the clouds." She shrugged her shoulders. “And you can't imagine how pleased I was to look at their faces the day the openweight title ended up on my waist.” Astrid smiled wider than ever. “By becoming the best in the world, I discovered the opportunity to fight with the strongest women in the federation, and that's what I came here for! And if earlier they had the opportunity to refuse me with the match, saying that I was nothing more than an upstart, then from that day it stopped working!”
Maybe Astrid never sought to use her status as a champion in order to shine against other fighters, but she was really proud that she had the right to call herself the best in the world.
“As for doubts, this is not my case!” She said confidently. “As I said before, doubts lead only to defeat, so there has never been and never will be room for doubt in my heart!” Astrid nodded in the affirmative. “I know that literally everyone doubted that I was worthy of being the first holder of the openweight title, but I never doubted myself!" Astrid grinned. “In my first title defense, I fought against Astrid Ostberg, and if I wasn't worthy of being a champion, she would have beaten me for sure.” A fire ran through the lavender eyes. “But she didn't.”
As Astrid explained her answer with another of her now trademark detailed answers, Andrew smiled and glanced at the camera crew for a brief moment. The interviewer found he couldn't help it, as he believed this to be Astrid's best answer yet, and one that the fans would be satisfied with.
It wasn't necessarily surprising to hear Astrid once more praise her contemporaries in LAW, but it was an engaging thought to imagine who else could have held the openweight belt. Though, as previously voiced, Andrew believed that LAW had found the best choice possible.
What the Golden Dragon had to say about doubt was also no less expected, but no less compelling and inspiring. Andrew felt the need to say as much. "I guess I should have seen that coming. If you had any doubt, then you wouldn't still be champion. That's the right way for a champion to think, if you ask me."
Realising that they had both come to about the end of the interview, the former marine smiled as he straightened up in his chair. "Well, I'd say we're almost done here, and you've been fantastic for how detailed your answers have been, Astrid. But, let's knock out a few small questions rapid fire! Just throw some short answers the viewers' way. What's your dream match? Do you prefer pizza or burgers? Standard or hardcore matches? Is risk worth it for whatever your dream is? Can you tell us a secret about yourself? When you reach Valhalla, what will you have to say to your ancestors? Finally, could the Golden Dragon give a message to the LAW fans at home?"
Although Astrid didn't know how many questions she would have to answer, she had a feeling that the interview was nearing its end. And she turned out to be right, because Andrew offered her a so-called blitz, where she should give short answers to short questions. After all the long answers she gave, it seemed impossible, especially after Andrew asked the first question.
“I think I'm going to ruin this blitz, haha!" Astrid laughed, then took a deep breath to collect her thoughts. “Two matches!” She said. “An official match against my best friend, Charlotte, she's the best fighter I've ever met and she deserve to be at the top of LAW!” After that, a strange smile appeared on Astrid's lips. “And a match against my future wife to determine who will take the partner's last name, the match will end only when one of us says out loud her first and the partner's last name." Astrid pursed her lips slightly in embarrassment, apologizing to Andrew for not giving a short answer, she promised herself to answer the rest of the questions as briefly as possible. “Burgers!” Licking her lips, she replied with pleasure to the question about food. “Hardcore, huh!" She smirked at the question of standard and hardcore matches. “Beyond any doubt!” Astrid nodded seriously at the question about dreams. “Oh... well...” the next question made Atsrid blush. “I like it when someone licks and kisses my abs...” she said, blushing even more. “We need some drinks because I have an amazing story to tell you, the story of Astrid Arvidsson!” Gathering her thoughts, she answered with pride the question about Valhalla. “I've said many times that I want my ancestors to be proud of me!" She said, turning to the nearest camera. “I don't know what they think of me now, but I know for sure that you are already proud of me!” She said with a smile. “I feel all your support and want to say thank you!" Astrid clenched her fist and pressed it to her chest. “I promise that I will not let you down, not now, not ever!" The smile on the blonde's face widened. “Take care of yourself and never be afraid to go to your dreams! Love you!”
Astrid was immediately eager to answer the first question of the lightning round. The first dream match was pretty bog-standard, but the second was rather hilarious, as Andrew was forced to stifle a laugh to allow the Norwegian woman to continue.
The next two answers were quicker, suiting the fast-paced concept of the question, additionally, both answers were befitting of Astrid's viking demeanour. As was, the next in-line with her prideful nature.
To the last one, the champion seemed eager to address her fans. Looking directly into the nearest camera, the cameraman made sure to zoom in as the heartfelt message was delivered by the Golden Dragon.
And with that, this joy of an interview had reached its conclusion. Standing up, Andrew extended a hand to Astrid. "Well, that's all I had to ask you today. Thank you very much for attending and giving such detailed and passionate answers." Shaking the Golden Dragon's hand firmly, the old pro gave a warm, fatherly smile towards the blonde woman. "On a personal note, take it from a retired pro, you do the sport justice and everyone in LAW should be glad that Astrid Arvidsson is representing them to the world."
Contrary to her expectations, Astrid felt more than relaxed throughout the interview. However, now that the interview has come to an end, the Norwegian woman felt strangely relieved, as if she had passed an important exam in high school. The descendant of the great Vikings rose from her chair with a wide smile and extended her right hand forward, accepting Andrew's handshake.
“Thank you for inviting me!” She said it with absolute sincerity. “This was my first experience with an interview, and it's the first time I've shared the details of my life with the world." Astrid closed her eyes for a moment, while her smile widened. “And I definitely loved it!”
Astrid didn't go into details, but right now she felt like a very heavy weight had been lifted from her heart. After becoming a champion, she learned how to talk to the fans who support her, but even for them, she was only the Golden Dragon. Today, thanks to Andrew, the Norwegian woman got a chance to tell them that she's something more than the Golden Dragon, she is Astrid Arvidsson.
“I will keep your words in my heart,” she promised. “And I promise that no matter what obstacles await me ahead, I will never turn away from the path I have chosen!” She promised in response to Andrew's warm parting words. “Who knows, this might not be our last interview, so I'm looking forward to our next meeting!”
At this wonderful moment, the first interview with Astrid Arvidsson, the inaugural openweight champion, officially came to an end.
