If you ask Mateo why he came to LAW, he’ll be bluntly honest with you - he came to Japan to wrestle hot women and pick up chicks. He’s got no shame in that and doesn’t understand why anyone would. Being paid to roll around with sexy women? That’s a dream job.
As you might expect from someone with this kind of reasoning, he tends not to take much of anything seriously, and approaches life with a lazy, easy-going style, not putting too much thought into anything long-term. He can get serious when he wants to, but he often lacks the motivation for that, and chooses to breeze through life and let things happen.

History
Mateo, despite being the son of the famous wrestler Valerio Vega, never had any interest in following in his father's footsteps. The name "Vega" carried much weight in Puerto Rico and helped Mateo in many ways- he got admission to the best schools and made good friends. People often gave him special treatment, hoping to ingratiate themselves with his famous father, and Mateo was content to let them do so. After all, he had a good thing going, so why stop?
After a party, Mateo drove home while he was a little drunk. Unfortunately, he had a car accident. Fortunately, nobody got hurt. However, the incident brought a significant stain on his family's reputation. Moreover, it indicated to his father that something important was wrong. He gave Mateo an ultimatum - he was either going to join the family business and get in the ring, or he was getting cut off from the family fortune.
Mateo chose the latter and went into training. Surprisingly, he asked an old friend to train his son instead of doing the honors himself, calling on Goto Arisawa. While Goto was a karateka and not a wrestler per se, he’d fought in numerous wrestling promotions in his time and had mastered a style that would fit well in the ring. On top of that, Valerio hoped the discipline of karate might rub off on his son.
Mateo was an okay student but never really gave up his carefree lifestyle. Being born into a life of wealth and privilege made it hard for him to change his ways. As time passed, he felt the urge to explore and find a place to enjoy the freedom to do what he pleased.

+Mateo’s a big basketball fan, and has a small collection of balls signed by some of his favorite players.
+Spends an inordinate amount of time getting his hard fixed every morning. Never seems to get it right.
+Has a love of classic monster movies, and Godzilla movies in particular. Isn’t big on the Legendary Series, though. Not a fan of CGI.
