Just Waiting to be Ambushed

Aurelia Decimus

The low sound of wagon wheels and marching feet filled the air as the Imperial supply train made its way down the narrow dirt road. Normally the soldiers would chat amongst themselves as they went but none dare speak today for they were joined by the Black Knight, Aurelia Decimus. The fearsome knight sat atop an impossibly huge black warhorse, riding at the center of the wagon train so that she could respond to trouble whether it come from the front or the back of the wagon train.

Recently the Empire had invaded a small merchant kingdom of Pheterra. With their overwhelming numbers and magically powered technology, the Imperial military had laid waste to the small and poorly trained Pheterran army. The war seemed all but over when organized insurgencies suddenly began springing up across the land. It was discovered that these groups were being led by a handful of stubborn mercenaries who had stayed to fight even after their employer was defeated.

After several failed attempts by the army to capture these rebellious mercenaries, the Emperor himself ordered his most trusted agent to see that these dissidents were dealt with and so Aurelia came to this land to fulfill her duty. She hoped that such a large supply train would be enticing bait for the mercenary rats. She would scan the tree line that flanked the sides of the road, searching for even the slightest sign of movement.

Besides the trail that the caravan was rolling down on, on both sides an ambushing party had taken up hiding spots well in advance. The small mercenary group, just like many others in the area didn't stick around from the goodness of their hearts. Even after the fall of Pheterra, their contacts had not gone silent as they expected. Their orders, and more importantly, their payments kept coming as usual. The mercenaries only had vague guesses as to where the money was coming from, but it was never their job to ask. The group about to ambush Aurelia, was led by two formidable female mercenaries, one of them waiting on each side of the road. On one side Amyra Colton, a human swordsman waited for the signal.

That signal was to be given from the other side of the road, from the elven mage standing beside the second commander of the group, Elenor Undine. And it wasn't going to be any kind of signal. Much before the caravan got close the group set up a magical trap on the road. It was undetectable to most, only a powerful mage could have discovered it in time. The trap possessed huge explosive power, basically able to obliterate whatever vehicle was passing above it when triggered, along with any passengers unless they were wearing some of the most powerful enchanted armours in existence. Like the one equipped by the Dark Knight, sitting in the middle of the supply train. As an experienced mercenary Elenor was quick to judge that the main threat from the whole train was the fighter travelling on the warhorse, so just as Aurelia got above the trap she gave the signal and a huge explosion shook the forest. The carts on either side of Aurelia got scorched and several soldiers near her met their doom instantly.

Aurelia's horse was no doubt killed but the black knight survived, her enchanted armour saving her body by being destroyed itself. She couldn't enjoy that for long as immediately after the explosion the mercenaries came rushing in attacking the rest of the guards. Elenor and Amyra rushed down from their positions too but both of them knew they had to focus on a single target. Any seasoned fighter could tell by a single look that even without armour the Black Knight is a seriously tough opponent. The two girls surrounded the Knight as a battle raged around them between the two forces. Neither girl talked, tensely watching their unexpected opponent. They did not expect someone wearing armour capable of withstanding that explosion. And judging by her looks she wasn't just some ridiculously rich and paranoid merchant either.

Aurelia looked down and saw something glowing from beneath her horse. Her eyes would widen from beneath her horned helmet but there was nothing she could do for she was suddenly engulfed in magical energy and sent flying from her horse. The black knight crashed into the dirt and rolled for several meters, bits of her scorched enchanted armor breaking off with each tumble.

"Tch--" She spat as she pushed herself up off the ground. her ears were ringing and her vision was blurred. The Black Knight would pull off her cracked helmet and throw it aside. As her senses returned she saw that the road was now filled with the sights and sounds of battle. She drew her long broad sword and scanned the scene for a target. She wouldn't have to search long as two young woman approached her with swords drawn. Fools, Aurelia thought. Though her enchanted armor was now gone aside from her gauntlets and torn and scorched cape, Aurelia was still a significant threat.

She would raise her sword and move to meet her attackers. As she drew near she couldn't help but notice how young her opponents looked. "Little girls shouldn't rush so eagerly towards death!" The Black Knight would taunt.

The two girls rushed down onto the path before waiting to see the results of the explosion, only to see Aurelia still alive though for the most part without her armour. Despite their relatively young age both were seasoned mercenaries and knew a tough opponent when they saw one. There wasn't supposed to be someone of this strength in the caravan, but it was too late to do anything but fight.

The girls didn't reach to Aurelia's taunt and instead slowly got closer, an intense, battle-ready expression on their faces as they watched for Aurelia's every twitch. They made sure to approach from opposite sides so Aurelia couldn't keep her eyes on both of them at the same time. As they finally got within range, Elenor gave the signal with a small, barely noticeable nod and both girls jumped forward, thrusting their swords straight towards Aurelia's body, trying to pierce the Knight from both sides, in the hopes that she couldn't block or dodge both attacks at the same time.
