Besides the trail that the caravan was rolling down on, on both sides an ambushing party had taken up hiding spots well in advance. The small mercenary group, just like many others in the area didn't stick around from the goodness of their hearts. Even after the fall of Pheterra, their contacts had not gone silent as they expected. Their orders, and more importantly, their payments kept coming as usual. The mercenaries only had vague guesses as to where the money was coming from, but it was never their job to ask. The group about to ambush Aurelia, was led by two formidable female mercenaries, one of them waiting on each side of the road. On one side Amyra Colton, a human swordsman waited for the signal.
Single-use character for now, not on the fantasy roster
That signal was to be given from the other side of the road, from the elven mage standing beside the second commander of the group, Elenor Undine. And it wasn't going to be any kind of signal. Much before the caravan got close the group set up a magical trap on the road. It was undetectable to most, only a powerful mage could have discovered it in time. The trap possessed huge explosive power, basically able to obliterate whatever vehicle was passing above it when triggered, along with any passengers unless they were wearing some of the most powerful enchanted armours in existence. Like the one equipped by the Dark Knight, sitting in the middle of the supply train. As an experienced mercenary Elenor was quick to judge that the main threat from the whole train was the fighter travelling on the warhorse, so just as Aurelia got above the trap she gave the signal and a huge explosion shook the forest. The carts on either side of Aurelia got scorched and several soldiers near her met their doom instantly.
Aurelia's horse was no doubt killed but the black knight survived, her enchanted armour saving her body by being destroyed itself. She couldn't enjoy that for long as immediately after the explosion the mercenaries came rushing in attacking the rest of the guards. Elenor and Amyra rushed down from their positions too but both of them knew they had to focus on a single target. Any seasoned fighter could tell by a single look that even without armour the Black Knight is a seriously tough opponent. The two girls surrounded the Knight as a battle raged around them between the two forces. Neither girl talked, tensely watching their unexpected opponent. They did not expect someone wearing armour capable of withstanding that explosion. And judging by her looks she wasn't just some ridiculously rich and paranoid merchant either.
