Camille couldn't decide whether this was a good thing or a bad thing as she stared at her cellphne's screen. The translator app was helpfully turning the mysterious moon etchings of the East into something she could understand, but what it said vexed her. Not because her first opponent has a distinctly Western name - that might actually be a blessing. Wouldn't it be nice to have a match with someone she could understand? It might take some of the edge off. Make her feel a little less like an outsider.
No, the thing giving her pause is that it's in a couple days. Is that too soon? Would she prefer it sooner to just get it over with? She can't tell. On the one hand, jet-lag has been running wild in her family since landing last night. Her internal clock is all wrong, leaving her groggy and a little out of sorts. So having the chance to go in at full strength without that fatigue dragging her down would be for the best, wouldn't it? But on that other hand, she can't escape the grim reality that everything rides on her now; not only her own career, but the security of her family. That fact gnaws away at her on the inside, and the first impression she makes with this new audience, with these managers who sunk a considerable investment in bringing her on, rides on this first match. Would it be better to get it over with so she can breathe again?
CLONG.
Camille's fixation on her cellphone and inner turmoil has brought her into a head-on collision with a streetlamp.
"Aayy!," hisses the teen as she staggers back, her left hand pressed tight against her forehead.
A few people strolling down the sidewalk saw that. They're now snickering at her and murmuring to each other. Goofy foreigner, not watching where she's going. The only response Camille can offer is an embarrassed smile and wave until they've passed. Then it's back to pressing her hand against her head and inwardly kicking herself.
She thumbs at the screen to dismiss the message from booking, and instead swaps to her navigational app struggling to make sense of the labyrinthine nature of downtown Tokyo. Her head lifts to scan the surroundings and search for things that look like what the app is translating, which becomes multiple rapid looks to her phone, then her head popping up again to survey, rather like a meerkat.
She's wearing her "I'm not from around here" badge very loudly today. It's drawing attention.
