Because honor's a hard thing to come by nowadays (for LowDefinition)

Unread post by skip-stop »

"Are you worried?" Victoria asked.

Any other time, Charlotte would have firmly said no. But she didn't like to lie. Right now, she really felt a little uneasy. The Frenchwoman never sought to be the center of attention, not to mention the fact that she was a very complex person. It was difficult for her to find a common language with people, for this reason, her circle of communication was very limited all her life. And in a minute she was to perform in front of thousands of spectators. She took a deep breath.

"I rather feel responsible," she told to her manager, "I want to convey my thoughts to them, but I don't know if I can do it."

Victoria smiled good-naturedly. Perhaps of all the women and girls of her team, only Charlotte had such a high sense of responsibility. But at the same time, the Englishwoman was sure that her ward would cope. She adjusted her glasses.

"You don't have to try to come up with something," Victoria answered as honestly as possible, "they realized who you are thanks to your matches, so just be yourself and they will hear you."

Charlotte looked at her manager. Victoria was an unusual person. Next to her, the Frenchwoman always felt an unusual energy. She always had a bad relationship with her family and therefore she was not familiar with maternal care and other things. But almost every word Victoria said was always aimed at supporting every member of their team. And Charlotte was grateful for that. She smiled slightly and nodded to her manager.

Her dynamic music started and Charlotte came out from behind the curtains. She didn't count on the match today, so this time she decided to do without her trademark punches. Instead, she threw both hands up, accepting the audience's greetings with a smile. Victoria was really right, they remembered her because of her matches. From the outside, Charlotte didn't consider herself special or anything like that. But her behavior and principles clearly set her apart from many other fighters.

The Frenchwoman started down the ramp. No one had any doubts about why she was here today. Recently, many fighters have made loud statements in the light of recent events. And although Charlotte was not chasing popularity, today she also wanted to say a few words. She felt she had to do it. And she wanted to be heard by both the audience and potential rivals. The young woman approached the commentators' table and took the microphone.

She rolled under the bottom rope and quickly jumped to her feet. Charlotte headed to the center of the ring. Usually at this moment her heart was beating evenly, but this time it was different. This time she wasn't going to fight in front of thousands of eyes. This time she was going to talk to them. Charlotte felt this unusual atmosphere. She wasn't afraid, not at all. But all this was unusual for her. The Frenchwoman has never been a very emotional person. But at such moments, she just couldn't help but smile. When her music ended and the hall was filled with applause, she respectfully bowed to the audience. Charlotte took a deep breath and picked up the microphone.

"Konbanwa Tokyo!" she said loudly and confidently, which caused a new wave of noise.

They always loved it when foreigners used Japanese. And although it might seem that Charlotte did it only for the approval of the crowd, in fact it was her gesture of respect. She was always honest with herself and with everyone around her.

"After my first matches, as well as my announcement that I would be taking part in the race for the Openweight title, I received a lot of questions," she began, "and I think it's time to answer some of them."

Of course, Charlotte was not a caveman, but still it seemed to her that answering questions on Twitter was somehow wrong. The behavior of the Frenchwoman was something far from the most ordinary for the audience. And although this made them remember her, many did not understand who Charlotte was and where she came from in the first place? Well, today she had a chance to answer these questions.

"My name is Charlotte Ravel'," this time there was some pride in the Frenchwoman's voice, "and for the last seven years of my life I have traveled all over the world studying martial arts. During my training in a Chinese monastery, I was called the Sand Lizard and a martial arts master. At the same time, I formed my own code of honor."

She paused briefly, giving the audience time to process this information. Charlotte was not going to tell them her biography, however, it was necessary to voice this information in order for them to understand what she was going to convey to them.

"And here I am, in the ring of the best federation," she said, after which her gaze became more serious, "but I'm sure you won't deny that mostly in this ring we see not impartial matches between professionals. Instead, we see personal vendettas, attempts to get money and fame, striving to satisfy their own ego. But the most important thing is that we remember less and less about such a thing as honor."

Oh, they're definitely not used to hearing something like that. People in general have not been used to hearing the truth lately. And although everyone in this room knew that what Charlotte said was true, her words caused a mixed reaction. Maybe they just forgot that matches don't have to be accompanied by contempt, hatred and other similar things.

"I consider myself a person of honor and I try to follow the path of a true fighter!" the young woman continued. "Martial arts is my life. And every fight for me is not a way to earn fame and money. Every fight for me is a new step on the way of self-improvement. I work on myself every day in order to become better than I was yesterday. Many have forgotten what martial arts really are. And I'm ready to remind you about it. Martial arts is not about beating the shit out of each other for personal gain, martial arts is about striving to become the best version of yourself."

Finally, the reaction in the audience became a little more unambiguous and now Charlotte heard an approving noise. The young woman turned towards the curtains. She was ready to move on to the main part of what she wanted to say. She could feel her heart beating fast. It was unusual for her to speak in front of so many people. But at the same time, she realized that with every word she was getting easier.

"A real fighter never refuses a challenge, so I'm ready to fight anyone," Charlotte said, after which her eyes flashed, "but not this time. I decided to take part in the race for the Openweight title. The path to this title lies through Apex. Four qualifying matches, this is where my path begins. And I want my first opponent to be someone who shares my views!"

Charlotte's smile reappeared. She knew that these would be big words and, considering that she was not used to talking at all, it was strange for her. But at the same time she felt anticipation, because right now she had to throw her first open challenge. And she was ready for it. The Frenchwoman took a deep breath.

"If honor is not an empty word for you, then come here, to this ring," she said, "I want my first opponent on the way to the title to be a fighter who, like me, is not ready to stoop to dirty tricks, but who is ready to earn the right to call themselves a winner with blood and sweat. I want me and my opponent to get into the ring and show a real impartial match at the limit of our capabilities. I want a match where we will fight not because of hatred for each other, but in order to become the best together and prove that honor is still not an empty word! I want this match to show that the real fighters are still here! AND DON'T YOU WANT THE SAME?"

She turned to the audience with the last question in a burst of emotion, and this time it was a truly explosive reaction. She may not have been able to reach everyone, but still Charlotte felt that her words were right. She really wanted to remind them that the hate that is most often seen in the ring is not something that the audience is required to see every time. She wanted a match with a worthy opponent who would give her everything they have. Charlotte pointed to the curtains. She had only one question left to ask.

"Will there be someone who is ready with me to show our viewers and fans a real unbiased match, where we will both go forward in order to become better than we are now?!"

Aira looked upon the screens backstage as she watches Charlotte making her speech declaring her race to the World Openweight title. Hearing that she mentioned that the fights in LAW's ring are mostly less about honor and more about personal gains and vendettas and whatnot. The young bluenette took interest on what she have to say. Curiously listening in, she paced around as she held her chin lightly, nodding as she agreed on Charlotte's views and motivation on fighting here. To better one self.

When the open challenge were laid out, Aira took no time to spare and quickly spoke to the backstage crew to get her music ready. Smiling warmly as she watches the passionate call for a fighter that strives to be the best and set aside their emotions and personal vendettas to bring everything to the limit. And to see the crowd exploding with cheers was more than enough for her to know that if she answers this challenge, she knew that the fight will bring the best out of her, and perhaps also break her current limits.

The energetic music played out, the crowd cheered on as Aira walked out of the curtains. Looking towards the ring with a confident smile, she walked through the ramp as she looked over to the fans and waved lightly at them before focusing back to the ring and onto Charlotte. Walking through the ringside and taking another microphone before she climbs up the ring apron and leaned her back onto a ring post. Leaning her arm onto the top rope as she looked straight to Charlotte while picking up the microphone close to her mouth.

"Charlotte Ravel, everyone!!!" She let out loudly to start off the crowd cheering for Charlotte again. "Well, I'm going to say that I'm touched... No, moved by your speech. There's not enough fighters here who strives to be the best of one self. And it is why I'm here to answer your call..." Aira stated out with confidence as the crowd cheered out in her momentary pause as she ducks under the top rope and entered the ring. "Ah right, right... Where are my manners. I forgot to introduce myself, let's get right into it then!" She let out while scratching the back of her head as she paced through the ropes.

"Selamat Malam! My name is Airani Dwi Melati Sukma! You can just call me Aira, I'm from Indonesia, and my favorite band is Arashi. Pleased to meet you." She introduced herself and bowed lightly towards Charlotte and the crowd after that. "As you all know, I am creating my own path to challenge for the Openweight Title as well. And well, Haruna-sensei told me to find the toughest opponents I could find for my Openweight title qualifiers. To push myself to the limit and break it she says..." She addressed to the crowd and at the end her gaze turns back to Charlotte.

"I do agree with what she said, and your speech certainly told that point better." Aira lets out a light grin as she walked towards Charlotte. "So how about we have a date on this ring for the qualifier bout then?" She asked, glancing to the crowd to see them roaring out in cheers as they now look forward to a match between two pure fighters who strives to be better. "They seem to like it, so... Do we have a deal? Oh wait... I do wonder what sort of fight you had in mind, I'm down for anything really! Be it a straightforward match, or some fancy stipulations like No Holds Barred, Ironman, Last Man Standing, anything! Bring it all on!" Aira continued on and mentioned the fact that Charlotte have yet to state what kind of match she seeks after she found a challenger.

It took some time, but still the answer to Charlotte's call did not take long to wait. Soon after the Frenchwoman threw an open challenge, music unfamiliar to her began. A slight smile appeared on the young woman's face. The thought that there were still those who were ready to share her views warmed her heart.

And although she was not familiar with the woman who was approaching the ring, it was not difficult for Charlotte to notice the first details. This blue-haired woman was full of energy. But at the same time, she didn't look like some poseur who decided to come here just to make themselves known. Of course, Charlotte was aware of the possibility that her call could be answered by someone who just wanted to spoil this evening. But she had a good feeling about it.

The pink-haired woman calmly watched the actions of the arrived fighter, who in turn took the microphone, and then climbed to the edge of the ring. Charlotte had to make some effort to restrain a smirk at the moment when her potential rival remained outside the ropes. It seems that this blue-haired woman had some artistic skills. Charlotte was relatively far from such things, at least for now. But she didn't see anything wrong with it, especially considering that the audience liked it.

Then she started talking. And she began by slightly pushing the audience to give Charlotte another wave of applause. The Frenchwoman smiled slightly and nodded gratefully in response to this good-natured gesture. According to the blue-haired woman, she agreed with what Charlotte said and it looked like she was ready to develop this topic. But then she remembered that she should introduce herself, if not for the audience, then for Charlotte.

When she slipped between the ropes and found herself within the ring, Charlotte had the opportunity to see in all her glory the woman with whom she was most likely to come together in the match. She was somewhat younger than Charlotte. And although she was at least half a head shorter, at the same time they were approximately equal in weight. And, of course, Charlotte couldn't help but notice the unusual appearance of this woman. In the ring, the she didn't care much about such things, but this blue-haired woman was incredibly attractive.

Ah, Charlotte finally found out her name. And despite all her self-control, she couldn't help but blink a few times. It was the most unusual name she had heard in her entire life, especially considering that she had traveled for a long time and knew a lot about different cultures. And although it was really easier for her to call this woman Aira, it was also a beautiful and memorable name. But then the Indonesian woman managed to surprise Charlotte even more. A bow. It was a bow. Perhaps not as official as the one used by Charlotte herself, but still. It was a very nice gesture, which the Frenchwoman appreciated.

After Aira introduced herself, she began to get to the most important thing. At first she said she was also on her way to the Openweight title, and then it became clear that Charlotte wasn't the only one who had students here. And there was nothing wrong with that, especially considering that Aira's sensei had apparently instilled in her the right moral principles, which definitely deserved praise.

Not a muscle on Charlotte's face twitched at the moment when the blue-haired woman approached her. Maybe it wasn't too obvious, but there still was the subtext. Aira wanted to show that she was standing in front of Charlotte without any fear. Well, Charlotte could only respond in kind. The right corner of the pink-haired woman's lips lifted slightly when she heard the reaction of the audience. Now their match can almost be called a fact. It remains only to set a date and... yes, Aira was absolutely right. Charlotte thrown a challenge but she didn't mention what type of match she was willing to offer. She had the answer to that question. And finally she got the chance to speak.

"Le plaisir est pour moi," Charlotte said, although it would be rude of her to leave this phrase only in French, "the pleasure is all mine."

She was lucky that she was in her casual outfit, this allowed her to put the microphone in her pocket, because she needed both hands. The young woman clenched her right fist and pressed it to her straightened left palm, after which she made a bow to Aira. Not only because the blue-haired woman gave her a bow, but because it was a classic greeting for Charlotte of those with whom she was to meet in the match. Straightening up to her full height, Charlotte picked up the microphone again.

"And I'm glad you share my views, because honor's a hard thing to come by nowadays," she continued, "I will gladly face you in a combat, Aira, and I'll give you everything I have to test your and my own abilities."

She had to take a short pause so that the audience could release emotions in the form of a new wave of noise and applause. Charlotte was confident in her words and she really believed that the audience began to forget what it was like to see fighters in the ring who are fighting for the right to call themselves the best, and not the worst enemies who are fighting for revenge or the devil knows what else. And when the noise in the hall slightly decreased, it was time to answer the blue-haired woman's question.

"Any of the match types you listed would be a great challenge for both of us," she admitted, but then her right corner of her lips lifted slightly again, "but I would like to meet you in another match, more specific, but no less easy, and I challenge you to fight me in a tables match!"

It seemed that the hall exploded at that moment. Perhaps it wasn't the rarest type of match possible. But it was definitely one of the most favorite matches of the audience. This type of match was as tough as any other hardcore match, which forced the fighters to overcome the limits of what was possible, but at the same time this type of match was spectacular. Charlotte has long wanted to try her hand at something like this. And today she got such an opportunity thanks to Aira. And the audience was inspired by such a choice for the match, which they were already looking forward to.

"So what do you say, Aira?" Charlotte asked, guessing what answer she would get. "You and I. In a week. A tables match. No dirty tricks, but pure skill and fortitude. A fight to the last drop of sweat to find out what we are really worth."

With these words, Charlotte stretched out her right hand forward. To the loud shouts of the audience, she offered the Indonesian woman to seal their agreement with a handshake.

Aira pocketed her microphone as she let Charlotte have the platform to speak. Nodding and smiling warmly, agreeing with Charlotte. She looked around to the crowd and relieved to see that the crowd is behind the two women drive to fight. To be the best and improve themselves in a honorable fight. One thing that Aira noticed in her short time here is just that most of the fights weren't driven by this exact pure intent. Aira hums softly as Charlotte admitted that the match types she mentioned earlier would be a challenge... But to hear that she wants a table match. It raised an eyebrow for Aira, curious and interested. She had to admit that the win condition for that match wasn't to her forte. But to hear the crowd exploded in excitement at that chosen match type. Aira couldn't help but smile as her heart started to beat excitedly to follow through what the crowd wanted to see.

"Heh..." Aira let out lightly as Charlotte offered her right hand. She took out the microphone and held it with her left as she spoke. "I have to admit, I never have a tables match in my short time here. But I like the sound of that..." She let out as she walked away slightly from Charlotte. "I know I haven't proved myself much here in this ring... But with this match, and you as an opponent? A honorable fighter who honed her life in Martial Arts before coming here? I'd be lying if I say I'm not honored to have this." She raised her tone excitedly as she approaches Charlotte once again.

"Tables match, no tricks, only skills and fortitude. Next week. It's a date!" Aira set aside her microphone and took Charlotte's hand and shakes it. The crowd exploded in cheers as the match is made official with the agreement. Aira gazed straight to Charlotte's eyes with a mix of excitement and confidence. Her handshake was firm and vigorous. "Looking forward to it." She let out without her microphone, but the crowd could see her mouth movement as her head nods excitedly to the thoughts of having the match with Charlotte.

Oh, Charlotte was ready to admit that she hadn't expected such a reaction. Neither from the audience, nor from Aira. It was easy to tell from the loud shouts and applause that they really wanted to see this match. The Frenchwoman was right about that. Recently, they have become accustomed to seeing in the ring not a pure confrontation between two fighters, but a banal finding out who has a bigger ego. But it's time to remind them again that a real match is something more than that. Charlotte and Aira were going to take care of it.

And, of course, the young woman was flattered by Aira's words. She had never possessed much self-conceit, but she was really pleased to hear it from another fighter. Someone might say that Aira says this only for the sake of the audience's sympathy. But Charlotte knew that wasn't the case. It was difficult for her to find a common language with people, it's true. But the Frenchwoman could almost always tell which person was standing in front of her. And she felt that when Aira said that it would be an honor for her, these words were the pure truth.

This time a wide and sincere smile appeared on Charlotte's face. When the blue-haired woman gave her consent, the match became official. Under the loud roar of the crowd, the women shook hands. Aira's grip was firm and confident. Charlotte responded in kind, firmly squeezing the hand of the already official rival. And jh, she liked Aira's look.

In the eyes of the Indonesian woman there was not only confidence, but also anticipation. She could see the same thing in the pink-haired woman's eyes. It was a beautiful moment. Charlotte knew that none of them would back down and that each of them would fight for the right to be named the winner. Charlotte's eyes twinkled when Aira said she was looking forward to it. And what made it special was that she said it in person to Charlotte, without a microphone.

"So am I," she said in the same way so that only Aira could hear it.

Releasing her opponent's hand, Charlotte took a step back and turned to the audience. Only now did she notice how fast her heart was beating. Yes, she has always been calm and cool-headed, both in the ring and outside it. But now she felt incredibly inspired. She got a worthy rival. And they both got tremendous support from the audience. The young woman brought the microphone to her mouth.

"You heard!" she said loudly. "In a week! Come back in a week and you will see what a real match is! We will fight for the sake of getting better and we will show you what real fighters are worth! Thank you for your support and see you!"

Smiling at the new wave of noise, Charlotte turned off the microphone and looked at Aira again. Charlotte wanted to say something, but she didn't know how to express it properly. Although perhaps the words were superfluous here, since the Frenchwoman looked at her rival with undisguised respect.

"I'm glad it was you who accepted my challenge," she said, "thank you, I'll see you in this ring in a week."

With a curt nod of farewell to the Indonesian woman, she headed for the ropes. Charlotte rolled under the bottom rope, and then went to the commentators' table in order to put the microphone. She was incredibly relieved now. It went much better than she expected. It was her first experience in communicating with the audience and it was her first open challenge. The pink-haired woman approached the most active fans in order to give them five, and then she began to climb the ramp. She stopped at the very top. Charlotte raised her right index finger above her head.

"In one week!" she reminded before disappearing behind the curtains.
