Built to Endure (for HotWheels)

"...kyujuu....kyukuu...hyuku."

After completing his hundredth crunch, Kyo allowed himself to recline on the training mat, breathing hard, his naked chest perspiring a little as it rose and fell. It was late hours, and the gym-- one of the official ones attached to the LAW arena-- was less populated than usual. Which was fine, as Kyo preferred not to engage with people when he was training. It wasn't just a time of physical training for him: it was also a time of quietude, of introspection, of training himself mentally and spiritually as well as physically. Maybe it was all that meditative practice his mom had put him through during kendo lessons as a boy, or maybe he just liked to be away from the noise and chaos of LAW every once in a while.

He sat up. He was wearing only a simple pair of black gym shorts that clung to his frame, terminating at the uppermost part of his thighs and leaving the rest the rest of his well-chiseled form naked and exposed to the relative silence of the gym. He glanced at one of the adjoining mirrors and noted himself-- well his well-developed abdominal muscles, lean but tightly corded arms and legs, land dark hair. He didn't like to indulge in pride, but as of late, even he had to admit he looked good. Several of his opponents seemed to think so.

He allowed himself to recline back on the mat and regulate his breathing. It had been a while since his last...well...encounter, with Valerie, a tempest of raw passion that had erupted after their brutal iron man match. He had been thinking of her a lot since then, of wanting to see her again, of that one night in the infirmary.

He was also thinking, rather guiltily, of JJ. Of all of the things he had said to her, of their own fiery exchange of passions after they had first met in the ring. He grimaced, and buried his face under his arm. He had no idea what he was supposed to do next. He couldn't pretend he didn't care for them both. He also couldn't deny that everything that happened meant that he was inevitably going to hurt one at the expense of the other. He dreaded having to do that; he also knew, though, that he couldn't, wouldn't, lie to either of them.

How the hell did I let this happen...

He cursed, sat up, and immediately tried to quell the thoughts from his mind. He needed to focus on something else for the moment. Something like his training. He could think on how to resolve this drama later; for now, he needed to focus on himself, his fitness, and his health. More to the point, he couldn't wrestle if his attention was so easily diverted.

Grabbing his headphones, he cycled his phone over to his third exercising playlist (mostly anime tracks by Susumu Hirawasa and Yoko Kanno), grabbed his towel, and headed off towards the practice mats. Taking up an empty sack, he wrapped his arms around it and began to practice throws, suplexing and slamming it against the mat. And maybe, just maybe, he found himself taking some of his frustrations out on it...

A wet, vibrating raspberry tore through the hushed concentration of the LAW gym, louder and more obnoxious than Juno intended. She sat frozen for a beat on the pec fly machine, her arms butterflied open, realizing the sound had echoed off the mirrors. To her right, a striking woman with stacked curves and a complexion that hinted at Latin heritage paused her reps. The woman twisted her mouth in distaste, adjusted her earbuds with a sharp, dismissive movement, and returned to her grind, leaving Juno with a sheepish grin and no one to banter with.

It figured. The monotony of the gym always clawed at her throat, a suffocating reminder of the rigid routines she had fled the military to escape. Usually, Brooklyn kept her grounded during these sessions, but LAW had pilfered her battle buddy for the evening. Somewhere in the complex, Brooklyn was currently suffering through a promotional photoshoot, likely standing stiff as a board and hating every second of it while photographers begged her to smile. The image made Juno snort, but without her friend, the rep-after-rep drudgery felt unbearable.

She released the handles of the machine, letting the weights clang down with a satisfyingly rude crash. The heavy metal thrashing in her own earbuds failed to drown out the restless noise buzzing in her brain - the static that demanded action, speed, and adrenaline. She yanked the buds out, letting them dangle around her neck, and stood to shake out her limbs.

Her green eyes swept the room and all the insanely gorgeous figures inside, landing inevitably on the nearest floor-to-ceiling mirror. She took a step closer, unable to resist a vanity check. A fine sheen of sweat acted like a second skin, glazing her collarbone and gathering in the valley of her cleavage, making her skin glow under the harsh fluorescent lights. She reached up, sweeping her long, heavy blonde hair back from her face, exposing a neck flushed pink from exertion and heat. The reddish sports gear clung to her damp frame, highlighting the athletic taper of her waist and the powerful curve of her hips. She looked good. It reminded her why she worked out... though it didn't motivate her all that well in the moment, unfortunately.

Her gaze drifted past her own reflection back to the practice mats in the distance. A dark-haired man - obscenely fit, stripped to the waist, and radiating intensity - waged war against a throwing dummy. He slammed the dead weight into the canvas with a visceral, rhythmic violence that sent a distinct shiver of appreciation down Juno’s spine.

She chewed on her lower lip, a manic spark lighting up her eyes. Hitting cold iron and plastic machines was one thing; engaging with that kind of fire was another entirely.

Quickly making up her mind before logic won the war, Juno grabbed her towel and swiped it across her forehead, not bothering to dry off completely. She sauntered across the gym floor, her hips putting a little extra sway in her step as she approached the mats. She waited for a break in his assault, stepping just into his peripheral vision so she wouldn't catch a stray elbow to the teeth.

"Hey, killer," she called out, her voice pitching over the thud of the bag hitting the floor. She offered him a lazy, challenging smile, crossing her arms beneath her heavy chest. "You look like you're trying to murder that poor sack of sand. Would you rather have something live to try and throw around? I need someone to spar with, and you look like you need a spar. Like, a real one."

Kyo had been busy demolishing the sand bag for the twelfth time in a row (yes he had been counting) when another voice spoke from out of nowhere. More than a little startled, he glanced up.

A woman was standing over him. She was tall, and incredibly fit, with well developed abs, thighs and biceps that glistened with sweat. A red two piece gym outfit clung to her sweat form, and her long blonde hair was tied back in a messy ponytail and an accompanying series of braids.

And she was smiling-- a playful smile that matched the tone of her challenge, though there was also an undeniable hunger in his eyes.

Regulating his breathing after his workout, Kyo rolled back into a sitting position and grabbed his towel to wipe his sweaty forehead and chest. "I suppose that depends on the type of spar in question," he replied, setting the towel aside to take a swig from his water battle. "What sort of fight are are you looking for, Miss...?"

He didn’t scowl. He didn’t huff, puff, or tell her to take a hike. That counted as a distinct victory in Juno’s book. She decided to lean into the momentum, dialing up the eager femininity just a notch to compel him to say yes. She shifted her weight, propping a hand on the curve of her hip and cocking one leg out, striking a pose that was half-pinup, half-challenge. It invited him to look, sure, but it also let him know she was comfortable in her own skin. And hell, half the reason Juno thought so highly of the opportunity to turn a life of not-quite-indentured servitude in the military into a career happened to be the likelihood of making attractive acquaintances, a category for which he definitely qualified.

And to that end, she took his response as an open door. She toed off her trainers, kicking them aside with careless grace, and stepped onto the practice mat. Her bare feet sank slightly into the foam as she strolled closer, the distance between them shrinking until she stood just inside his personal space to offer what she deemed a proper greeting.

"I'm Juno," she said, extending a hand and an even brighter smile toward him "And as for the fight... how about something mutually beneficial? You look like you need to blow off some steam, and I'm lacking a sparring partner and could, as she would normally say in her oh-so-dedicated way, 'use the work.'"

She tilted her head, her braid slipping over her shoulder, and rolled her eyes a touch at the sentiment. "Something good for the mats, maybe? Grappling only? Submission only? You can probably I don't want to end up ragdolled exactly like the bag, if that's what it sounded like I was offering." She cast a sympathetic glance at it once more. "Then again, I could be the one ragdolling you, if you're fine with that - Mr...?"

The newcomer seemed very much encouraged by Kyo's response; so much so that she shifted her pose into one that was halfway between a runway pose and a cocky demonstration of challenge. Given her easygoing smile and confident posture, Kyo was already cluing in that she was a wrestler (there were so many in LAW after all), but at this point he was also getting the faintest impression that she was flirting with him.

Then the newcomer kicked her trainers off and slowly, deliberately walked onto the mat, getting into his personal space, standing in such a way that he was forced to get a good look at her fit abs, strong thighs, and generous cleavage.

Oh.

Oh no.

She was definitely flirting with him.

He felt his face go red as he immediately fought to retain his composure. Even so, Juno might have heard the faint crack in his voice as he replied. "K...Kyo," he replied, before forcefully clearing his throat. "Kyo Akamatsu." At this point, he stood up and stretched, trying to distract himself from his momentarily flustered state. "Though I will warn you now, Miss Juno, you will find me very hard to ragdoll."

Well, well.

Juno didn't realize half the time how easily she put on the "moves" in natural conversation. She had watched a lot of movies thanks to needing to fill time as a kid and teen, and she had absorbed the charisma of screen dames like a sponge, mimicking them until those traits bled into her own countenance and speech patterns. She liked people in general, enjoyed washing them in friendliness, but she could turn simple persuasion and a few bats of her eyelashes into an outright sultry proposition a little too easily. It was a talent - or perhaps a hazard - she relied on a little too readily.

It reminded her of a chaotic night on shore leave years ago. She had somehow, completely by accident, secured dates with two different guys and a woman for the same evening. One of the men got dropped for an attitude problem, but the night still spiraled into an accidental threesome. She shrugged internally. Shit happened.

And shit was happening. She caught the glitch in Kyo's operating system immediately. The stutter in his introduction marked sharp shift from the focused training montage she had interrupted. Oops. But also... cute. He stood up to stretch, likely to escape the feeling of her looming over him in his personal space, but Juno found the reaction endearing.

And she saw no reason to simmer the tension down now.

She reeled back a step to give him room, planting her hands on her hips and watching him stretch with an appreciative, unabashed grin.

"Uh huh," she agreed, her voice a tease. "Well, Kyo, if it was easy to throw you around, it wouldn't make for very good training, would it? I'm not exactly made of glass either."

Kyo kept his eyes on Juno the whole while. The blonde American was watching him intently now, no doubt gauging how strong he was. Juno certainly didn't lack for confidence; her posture made it abundantly clear that she was confident of her strength, and her abilities. How skilled she was as a wrestler, though, remained to be seen: Kyo was fairly certain he hadn't seen her in the ring before.

He raised an eyebrow at her comment. "I see," he replied. "In that case, Miss Juno, I won't worry about making you crack.": He rotated his shoulders and arched his head, getting the kinks out of his neck. If he was honest, he felt he could use a nice spar, and Juno seemed eager if nothing else. he backed away to the other end of the mat and dropped into a gorilla position. "I"m ready when you are."

Around them, a crowd was starting to form: it wasn't often they got a spar in this area, let alone between two fit gym-goers such as these two...

That sounded like agreement - not that she hadn't expected agreement before.

Grinning at her success and her freedom from monotony, the blonde dropped into her own stance at the opposite end of the mat, rolling her shoulders back and shaking out her arms. Her pulse quickened - not from nerves, but from the anticipation of getting her blood pumping the proper way. Time to see what the pretty boy was made of.

She caught movement in her peripheral vision, though - other gym-goers drifting closer, forming a loose semicircle around the practice mat. She paused long enough to look at them, somewhere between chastising them with her eyes for coming over for a free show and appreciating the attention. A few whispered to each other, phones already out. Well, if she was going to blow off steam, she might as well give them something worth recording.

"Hope you stretched enough, Kyo," she called out, bouncing lightly on the balls of her feet. The foam beneath her gave just enough to make her spring and bounce well enough that someone wolf-whistled - though that could have just as easily been for Kyo, she supposed. "Wouldn't want to pull part of you out of place!"

She didn't wait for a response.

Juno exploded forward, closing the distance between them in three explosive strides. Her bare feet slapped against the mat as she ate up the space. At the last possible second, she dropped low. Her center of gravity plummeted as she shot for his legs, aiming to spear both arms around his thighs in a double-leg takedown.
Fast and shocking, entirely her style - and it could lead to the same kind of treatment he had given to the sandbag.

Kyo was conscious of the crowd forming around them. He paid them no heed: while ither wrestlers liked to showboat before an audience, Kyo instead liked to pretend the crowd didn't exist: it allowed him to focus solely on the battle, and solely on besting his opponent.

Juno, however, seemed very much aware of the crowd, and even seemed to appreciate their attention on some level. Her focus was put on Kyo as she mirrored his gorilla position...

And then someone wolf-whistled. Somehow, in that moment, Kyo was aware, just for a few seconds, of just how much of Juno's figured bounced as she got into position, and for all of his ironclad mental discipline, he felt himself blush.

A fatal chink in his armour.

The split second of distraction cost Kyo dearly as Juno suddenly rushed low, yanking his legs. With a startled gasp, Kyo went crashing onto his back, Juno slamming down on top of him. His instincts kicked in at that point, and he reflexively tried to grab for Juno's forearms while trying to keep his legs together to avoid a scissor, but that didn't change the fact that he was literally starting this match on his back...

The impact of Kyo hitting the mat sent a satisfying vibration through Juno's arms and chest. She felt the give of the foam beneath them, heard the startled gasp escape his lips, and grinned like a kid who'd just pulled off the perfect prank. It wasn't her fault that pretty boys got distracted easily, and she'd learned a long time ago that confidence and a little bounce in the right places could be just as effective as any feint. People expected her to rely on pure athleticism, but Juno had never been above using every advantage in her arsenal. Psychology was half the game, after all.

She felt his hands snap up immediately, instinct driving him to defend even as his back made contact with the mat. His fingers wrapped around one of her forearms, grip surprisingly strong, but she'd already committed her weight forward. She wrenched her other arm free with a sharp twist and a burst of power from her shoulder, using the momentum to throw herself down and to the side.

Her right arm snaked around his head, yanking his cheek roughly against the side of her chest as she tucked his face under her arm. The damp fabric of her sports bra pressed against his cheek and jaw as she locked in the headlock, her bicep flexing hard against the back of his skull. At the same time, her powerful thighs wriggled and coiled around his midsection, seeking purchase against his abs to pin him in place.

"Not bad for a start, right?" she huffed out, her voice slightly strained from the effort of maintaining her grip. Her blonde braid had fallen over her shoulder, tickling the back of his neck where her arm squeezed.
