Backstage, Starlight could barely keep still.
Her boots bounced lightly against the floor as she leaned over the match docket for the third time, eyes gleaming beneath the overhead lights. Her opponent’s name stared back at her in bold letters…
"Blaze" she said out loud, letting it roll off her tongue just to see how it sounded with the right emphasis. Clutching her shinai to her chest as if the name itself was some taboo she was breaking with nobody around to witness her. "So cool... Gosh, what if she’s a fire-swallower? Or a firey-flamey magician! Or maybe-" her eyes widened, and she gasped softly, " -a superheroine of flame and fury, powered by a burning heart of passion at her core! ...Or a villain… My greatest rival yet!?"
Of course, she didn’t actually know any of that. But the possibilities were endless, and that was half the fun with just knowing the name and nothing more. She had idly doodled a few little flame designs around the name in red and orange glitter pen before leaving the corkboard it had been posted on. While she hated not knowing what surprise was, she loved surprises in that paradoxical kind of way.
The thought alone sent a thrill racing through her. She spun her shinai once in her hand, the polished wood gleaming under the fluorescents. "No matter what she is, I’m ready for her," Starlight said aloud to the empty hall, nodding firmly to no one. "If she burns bright, I’ll just have to shine brighter!"
And with that, she turned on her heel and marched toward the curtain, ready to show the world what she had.

Cosmic Drift - SYNTHKRONE
She twirled the shinai in a spinning flourish before darting down the ramp, tagging a few outstretched hands along the way. Her movements had rhythm, choreographed yet full of spontaneity, the stride of someone who wanted to make people smile.
Sliding under the bottom rope, Starlight popped to her feet in one fluid motion, the arena lights sparkling across her white and gold gear. She crossed to the center of the ring and, with a deep breath, began to perform.
She swept her shinai through the air in a crisp arc, followed by another, then a third, each slash punctuated by a spin or turn, her movements fluid and precise. The wood hummed faintly as she finished the display with a one-kneed stance, the tip of her weapon angled toward the entrance ramp in salute to her unseen opponent.
Standing tall again, she smiled and spun the shinai in her fingers before offering it ceremonially to the referee with a small bow. "Keep it safe for me, okay?" she said brightly. The referee gave her a somewhat confused look, reluctantly nodding. A member of staff was ushered over to take it, depositing the weapon in the timekeeper's area.
Now, with the crowd on her side and her energy brimming, Starlight turned to face the ramp, bouncing lightly on her heels. It was time to be just who this Blaze person was.
