She would go years away from the sport, traveling the world, living the best life she could live, and she would think that she was over being in the ring. She wouldn’t regret her time outside of it, and she would think that she was done every time. Her life was complete, no need to overcomplicate things.
But then she would find herself in the gorilla position, getting ready for a match in the dressing room, and she would feel the crowd’s rumbling through the walls. She would smell the unmistakable odor of sweat permeating through the door. Her heart would beat with a faster cadence, her blood would race with anticipation of the battle to come, and she would know that this was where she was meant to be. She would remember how much she loved wrestling.
Now, if only she could get her daughter on the same page.
Angela stood in front of the dressing room mirror, putting the finishing touches on makeup, while Desdemona waited in the corner, twiddling on her phone. They’d both come dressed in their wrestling outfits, even though she was the only one competing tonight, and it had taken no small amount of arguing to make her daughter understand the importance of wearing her costume in her first televised appearance. If Desdemona had her way, she would’ve sat in the audience.
”Be sure to pay attention, tonight.” Angela ran her fingers through her hair, trying to get out all the nasty kinks. ”I know Alaina and I aren’t your sort of wrestler, but you can still learn a lot from seeing someone with her experience in action.”

”Your rope running in particular could use some work. I want you to focus on the way she moves with each step, see how she marks the distance.”
”Mhm.”
”...you’re not paying attention to anything I say, are you?”
”Mhm.”
Angela’s face scrunched up and sported wrinkles beyond her age, as she finally looked over her shoulder and saw her daughter sitting there, tweeting her heart with that all-too familiar blank, vacant looking and scrolling eyes. Probably on some Twitter thread again, posting some nonsense that had nothing to do with the business they were about to engage in.
This was, however, an easy fix. Angela simply turned around, reached out, and plucked the phone clean out of her daughters hands.
”Hey, hey!” Desdemona popped out of her seat and jumped, trying to reach for the phone as Angela held it above her head, but Angela kept it just out of her daughter’s reach. Ah, the perks of being over a foot taller than your offspring. ”Gimme back my phone.”
She shook her head. ”It’s my phone, technically. Unless you want to start paying your phone bill with the money you don’t have.” That stopped Desdemona’s little temper tantrum in its tracks, and her daughter simply huffed, folded her arms and looked off to the side. ”No, I thought not.”
Angela turned back to the mirror and slid the phone into her jacket pocket, as Desdemona stomped over with the biggest pout on her face. It would’ve been cute ten years ago. Much less so, now. ”Mom, come ooooooooooon. I’ll pay attention to the match, I promise, I just wanted to put something out on TikTok before-”
”You can do it after the match. For now, I want your undivided attention in that ring.” Angela turned to the side, staring deep in her daughter’s eye and bringing out her sternest tone. ”Are we clear?”
Desdemona looked off to the side for a second, hesitated, then brought her gaze back where she knew it belonged - looked her mother straight in the eyes. After a moment of fading rebellion, she nodded. ”Crystal.”
”That’s my girl.”
Homecoming by Makeup and Vanity Set
Angela made her way up steps, pulled down the top rope and stepped over it to enter the ring. She made her way across the ring with long, slow, powerful steps along the way, and raised her arms up in a bodybuilding pose once she was at the far end. She flexed, not just to show off, but to get her body good and warm, pumping herself up for the action to come.
Her music faded soon enough, and she settled into the corner to wait. As she did, however, she made sure to send a quick, nonverbal message towards her daughter…
