Born in the Brazilian coastal town of Oiapoque, Esmeralda Sinza was the daughter of a fisherman, and a highly skilled angler herself, wielding an incredible innate strength that let her pull up fish whose size were well beyond what she should have been able to pull up. She grew up happy, but by the time Esmeralda was approaching her 18th birthday, rising prices combined with the tax man coming down harder than ever, the cost of living started to get higher than what two fishers on one small boat could provide. When it got to the point where one more price hike, or even a small emergency would cripple their family, Esmeralda's father was financially pressured into taking risks. On top of the normal fishing work he and Esmeralda would do together, her father started going out on his own deeper into the sea, into choppy waters, and in dangerous weather that usually kept fishing boats docked. He was killed by a shark that was thrown onto his boat by stormy waves.
If Esmeralda and her father together hadn't been enough to pay the bills as fishermen, she knew she certainly wasn't going to be pulling it all off on her own. The question was what could she pivot her skills towards that would financially suffice. It was around this time that Esmeralda fell in love with a foreign man. It helped pull her out of her grief for her father, and while he didn't solve her money issues for her, he gave Esmeralda inspiration for her path to solve them. You see the man Esmeralda fell in love with was best described as a fight-sexual. He loved to fight himself, and independent of romance, he was drawn to the strongest fighters. Rather than by anything romantic, Esmeralda first caught his attention by beating down someone who'd tried to mug her before he got over to fight the mugger off himself.
So to both make the man of her dreams fall for her, and to make enough money to make ends meet for her family, Esmeralda chose the path of a professional fighter.
