One day though, she would take an interest in professional wrestling, and after weeks of begging a nearby promoter to let her wrestle, they would finally relent and give her a match. Maya went to the first show Skylar wrestled at, and though she took a beating, she felt proud of her daughter for doing something like this. Despite losing every match, Skylar stuck with wrestling, and after being taken under the wing of a mentor, she began to improve rapidly. Overtime, wrestling seemed to become an outlet for all the pain and anger in Skylar's life, as she became more violent and ruthless to her opponents.
Maya felt conflicted about this. She was happy that Skylar had found something she enjoyed and was good at, and could support herself with, and she was proud of her successes. But as time went on, it seemed like all the pain her daughter had felt in her life had come up to the surface, and was being unleashed as brutal violence against those who met her in the ring. One night, as Maya watched Skylar decimate a woman and leave her in a pool of her own blood, she was forced to come to a realization that horrified her: her daughter had turned into a monster, and she couldn't help but wonder if she was the one to blame for it. She had been the one to keep her, to leave her alone in that filthy apartment while she worked, to have her grow up poor. Though she loved her daughter more than anything in this world, Maya would often find herself wondering if Skylar would have been better off growing up in the system. She wondered if she had let her own trauma get in the way of her girl having a good life.
