Interested in a Battle Royal?

Unread post by CaptainL »

So! Battle royals (battles royal?). They're fun, they're a classic attraction in wrestling, and they're a great way to showcase lesser-known or utilized talent that might go unnoticed otherwise. But they're notoriously difficult to get to work in a play-by-post format, if everyone's just posting over each other with no sense of order.

Well, I intend to change that, as I've come up with a tentative ruleset to help make them work. I gotta give full credit where it's due to Noob here, as I'm ripping off a good deal of his Last Woman Standing tournament for how this is managed.
  • Before the thread is posted, a random number generator will be used to generate the order of eliminations, as well as who is eliminated by whom. Planning for this in advance will cut back on the chaos of trying to figure it out on the fly, as everyone will know going in who will win and when each character will be eliminated, so they can set things up accordingly. Of course, how each elimination happens will be up to the users to decide, but it must happen in the prescribed order. Eliminations performed by multiple wrestlers at once will also be allowed if everyone involved is on the same page, but they must involve the designated eliminator. As in the tournament, it will be possible for users to trade places in the elimination order if they so wish and if they agree upon it mutually, but that should be decided upon before the thread begins.
  • If more than one wrestler is present in the ring at a time, a post order will be decided, again using random numbers. Once everyone has posted, another order will be generated and the next round of posts will follow this sequence, and so on. For instance, say there are three wrestlers in the ring, controlled by posters A, B, and C. The order is determined to be ABC, so A posts, then B, then C. After C posts, the next order determined is BCA, so B posts, then C, then A. This way, we get to capture some of the unpredictability of a battle royal, while still having an organized method of keeping track of who posts when.
  • If only two wrestlers are left in the ring, then there's no need to generate random orders - they'll just alternate posts as a traditional thread.
With this being said, I ultimately don't have any idea if this works or not until it's tested. And that's where you come in! I'd love to be able to officiate LAW's first battle royal, using these rules to make it possible. It'll be a great way to use lesser-used characters and to show off what they can do to other posters. And if it works well, we'll have set a precedent we can follow in the future.

For our first battle royal, I'm planning on something simple - a traditional setup where 15-20 wrestlers start in the ring and battle it out until only one is left. Elimination will be by pin, submission, or being thrown over the top rope, and all weight classes will be able to participate. There's certainly room for even larger matches and your staggered entry Royal Casino Honor Warfare for the Gold in here, using random numbers to generate the entrance order as well, but I'd like to see how the basic rules work in practice before we try to bite off more than we can chew, for now.

If it sounds interesting to you, just let me know! As I've said, I want to get around 15-20 wrestlers for this, but we don't need 15-20 posters; if it's less than that, I can throw in my own characters or allow each poster more than one entrant. Right now, we're just in the gauging interest phase. I already have some people down for it, but I want to see who else might be interested. If it's something we want to do, I'll make a Discord channel so we can work out plans with everyone.

I hope this might be a step towards making this match type possible on the forum, and I'll be happy to answer any questions people might have!

:p did you steal my random numbers?

Also It would be cool for something like that to work. Although you're gonna need some really active people if ya don't want it to go on for two years

Don't look at me like thaaaaaaaaaaaaat :C

I'm going to try to see if I can keep people on track by reminding everyone when a post's up in the Discord. But that is a valid concern.

Whilst I can't join given my already slow posting as of late and big thread count, I love the idea. Like Noob said though, it's more the user than prodding people over and over. The issue with big threads like this is that a single event in a persons life that they can't control halts the whole thing. Then when they return, someone else could be behind.

I think the best solution could be to have only some of the very most active and allow them a few wrestlers. (Seven very active people using two or a few using three would still make fifteen easily.)

A very good point, that, and worth the consideration. As of this writing I've got five people on board, and I could easily join in for six, so we're approaching that number. I'll be sure to check in with everyone to make sure they think they can handle the commitment before I lock anything down, though.

I'm going to wait a little while to see if anyone else wants in, but hopefully we should be moving to the next phase soon!

Between all the people who've responded here and on Discord, I'm currently at you, Xalex, Suzannah, Blue, Devious, and potentially me. If we get a few more people and everyone gets two or three characters, it would probably work fine, but I'm still interested in seeing who else might possibly want to join.

Ultimately, though, I'm prepared for it to take a long time. The tournaments tend to take about a year anyway. What I'm most interested in is using this as a test run to see if this method is practical, because I could easily see it becoming a regular event like Last Woman Standing if it works.

Just as an update: I have seven people total now, so if everyone uses two characters we'd probably be able to make it work. However, I want to keep this open for a day or two in case anyone else wants to join in, as we could probably fit in one or two more if there was interest. Otherwise, I'll go ahead and make a Discord so we can start planning.
