An Interview With a Champion

Pretty much as expected. Interviews with characters, wrestlers, staff or otherwise. You can do these as one singular post, or a back-and-forth thread akin to a match, with one of you playing the interviewer and the other interviewee.

An Interview With a Champion

Unread post by CaptainL »

Author's Note
This interview takes place before Kyoko's match against Wyvern at We Are LAW 6.
It had happened. After a lengthy vacancy, the next LAW Middleweight Champion had been crowned - and it was a woman who was already a household name against LAW's faithful. No one could deny that Kyoko Akan was a fixture of LAW. She had been with the promotion since the beginning, and in that time she had proven herself to be one of those talents that defines the face of a company. Under her tenure as the self-proclaimed Belly Queen, she had seen a lengthy rivalry with Da Xia, had introduced one of LAW's first unofficial titles, and even facilitated the company's first Wargames match. She had garnered plenty of fans, and plenty of haters. Now, she was a champion once again; this time, under the auspices of the company. And here to take a look into her thoughts today was none other than LAW Magazine's senior columnist, Eiji Matsumoto.

The veteran writer honestly didn't know what to think of Kyoko. On one hand, she was without a doubt an iconic talent, and one LAW's fans certainly wouldn't forget. Her list of accomplishments was without a doubt impressive. On the other hand, was the whole belly-punching thing really so necessary? He had to resist the urge to roll his eyes to that. Still, perhaps he'd get some answers out of Kyoko yet. And now, as he sat before his desk with his pad and paper in hand, he awaited the entrance of the Belly Queen herself...

Eiji Matsumoto had been a name floating around Kyoko's life since she was little. Before she was born the man did interviews for many talents including her grandmother, who helped her in her early years before Kyoko decided the two didn't see eye to eye on some things. He'd also done a few interviews with her father and had even mentioned her career from time to time, even though the two had never directly talked. She wasn't sure what kind of reaction she could expect from him, and as usual cared little for it. She knew she was great and had the belts to prove it. Her victory over Emaline proved that her way worked over the lazy cheap road many others opted to take, that what mattered was how good you were. Kyoko wasn't looking for any second opinions, she was here to talk to the man who had interviewed and gotten into the minds of many wrestlers and continued to speak her mind the way she'd been known to do since forever.

Kyoko stepped out wearing both her Middleweight belt and the Belly Queen Belt that she'd made famous herself, both felt right being around her waist and she showed it by strutting down like this was any other entrance, instead she was heading to a chair instead of a ring. She took a seat next to Eiji and looked up at the old man. "Matsumoto...I do believe this is the first time we've had a chance to talk." Kyoko said. She would watch him for any signs of what he thought, if he approved or disproved of her being here and if she should be prepared for a barrage of insults, Eiji wasn't one to hold back his negative thoughts even to a guest.

Well, it was certainly true that Eiji had his reservations about Kyoko...but when she came strutting into the room, he smiled a little wider, sitting up straighter in his seat. "Ah, Ms. Akan, glad you could make it," he said with a nod, tapping his paperwork against the surface of the table to ensure everything was straightened and in order. In particular, the first things his eyes caught were the two belts around her waist - her new Middleweight Championship, and the Belly Queen belt she had rose to prominence under. Even he had to admit, for as ridiculous as an idea the Belly Queen Championship was, she had a way of making it look like it was the highest honor in the world when she wore it with pride. And when that was only half of the roster of accomplishments she had displayed around her waist, the effect could only be even stronger.

At the mention that this would be the first time Kyoko and Eiji crossed paths, the interviewer nodded his head. "Oh, you're far from the first Akan I've had the pleasure of interviewing...but what you are is the first to call themselves Belly Queen." At first he raised his eyebrow, but then he sat up straighter and cleared his throat. He had to remind himself that Kyoko did have a legitimate achievement to boast of now, and he couldn't risk losing track of what they were here for before the interview had even started, which could only breed ill will between him and the new champion - and that could only mean bad news for him. "So...how does it feel, being an official champion now?"

So far he seemed pleased to see her, for however long that would last Kyoko would keep it that way. She knew the importance of appearances like this and wouldn't waste it to talk down to one man unless he deserved it. She could keep a peace if it benefited her to do so, and besides he seemed ready to try and be civil judging by the smile and how he spoke of her once she arrived. "The name stuck. For the first few years of my career I had no nickname or anything to stand out. But fans took notice to the way I wrestled and what I did to the bodies of anyone dumb enough to step up to me and started calling me that. It seemed silly at first, but I was taught the importance of things like branding and nicknames and it seemed to stick. Back then I mostly wrestled in old singlets but soon I got new clothes to go with the name and it's been with me ever since." Kyoko said. The truth of the nickname had been passed around a few times so Kyoko figured she'd make it known to all now.

Despite her confidence she still took a second at the question about being an official champ now. She considered both belts to be as legitimate as each other, even if she knew no one here ever would. "It feels like the world has started to correct it's wrongdoings. Everyone knows that if I had been allowed to compete for the Middleweight championship when it was announced I'd be the first official champion LAW's ever had. The fact that it didn't happen then still angers me to this day, and I'll never forgive Dan for holding some silly rule over allowing the best talent possible to bring instant prestige to this belt. Now after he had to discard it when his way didn't work, I'm the one left to pick up the pieces. I should be mad about that, but honestly I've been putting value into everything I touch for so long that it's easy. This will be no different. Mark my words, you're about to witness the greatest championship reign of all time." Kyoko boasted, her confidence in herself still unwavering.

Well, Eiji never expected to find out where the Belly Queen name came from, but he supposed he had an answer now, whether he'd set out for it or not. And it was...more mundane than he could have ever anticipated, actually. It was just that simple? Was LAW not really run by incompetent morons after all? He stared back at her for a moment, tapping his pencil to the paper, before scribbling down some notes. "Well, then," he noted, before adding under his breath "I guess I can rest a little easier knowing you didn't come up with that," hoping Kyoko didn't hear it.

He also had to raise his glasses to Kyoko's description of how she was convinced she should've been the first Middleweight Champion. Surely, that was a presumptuous statement, and one that spoke to the girl's ego. He knew, of course, that nothing good could come out of pointing this out to her face, but he reserved the right to think it. And yet, when all the facts were laid out before him, even he had to look back on it all with a chuckle. "And now, Dan's the one appointing you to the position himself. That's what we call irony in this business." He was sure that Kyoko would take the time to gloat and to point out that Dan had finally seen the light and that this was going to happen all along, so he was going to cut her off before she got anywhere, clearing his throat and sitting up straighter. "I can tell you've got big plans for what you're going to do with the title. What's first on your list?"

Kyoko couldn't read the old man through his thick mustache and glasses, but she was suspicious of what he was muttering after she explained things, Luckily she didn't hear everything and he continued on by bringing up the irony of Dan being the one to make her champ which she smugly nodded at before he once again quickly changed the subject to something else. He wanted to know what her plans for the championship were.

"That should be obvious but I understand why you're asking it. My first priority is defining what it really means to be a champion, all the other champs have been so lethargic in getting challengers, sitting around collecting a paycheck and treating the belts like a prop they have to hold now and again. My belt may be made out of silver but I'll make it feel like gold, I don't wait around or let my presence feel diminished, instead I seek out my challengers like I did when I called out Wyvern to be my first challenger. I won't be fighting just anyone either, I made that mistake of just wanting to wrestle and LAW put me up against someone so green she looked like they pulled her out of her job. Once I dismantled her I made it clear that anyone would get the same if they thought they could just have a match with the champ. The champ is only going to fight at the top level, so unless you can bring that to me you're going to get hurt. Even if you do...you might get hurt anyway." Kyoko boasted.

Eiji nodded his head. So far, everything Kyoko was saying made...perfect sense, actually. She had a vision, and she was going to take her title reign seriously, which was all he could ever ask from a champion. She might have had the stigma of the Belly Queen name and the Belly Queen Championship following her around, but it was clear she wouldn't let that rule her - and that, instead, she was blossoming into the sort of serious, driven champion LAW needed, without needing to rely on gimmicks or pander to perverts. He had to be impressed with how far she had come. Or, had she really come anywhere, or was she always this way? Was he just losing his mind if he was actually this proud to be working with her?

Nonetheless, Eiji cleared his throat, shuffling in his seat as he settled back into place. "Honestly? Spoken like a true champion. Just hearing the way you talk, I can tell how important this is to you and how seriously you'll be taking the honors. I'm sure you can elevate this title." In fact, he couldn't help but think back on his interviews with Ayane Yamamoto in her prime - and he couldn't help but see a little bit of her in Kyoko right now. It seemed she truly was living up to her family legacy, after all.

He had a thought about that, but he'd put a pin in it for later. For now, he had another question on his mind. "Certainly seems like you're only letting those who prove themselves into the title scene - which, again, is a good thing. Keeps the titles from being devalued when you're only ever defending against incompetent half-wits far below your station, like some people I could name. But that makes me wonder, then - if you could pick any wrestler in LAW to defend the title against, who would it be?" This, he was sure, was bound to generate some discussion.

Kyoko smirked at Eiji's words. "I've been dedicating myself to wrestling since I was young watching my father win matches in my name, just because I indulge in the gimmicks doesn't change that I'm the best to ever do it and can take on anyone in anything and look like I belong. That's what happens when you get talent like me on your side." Kyoko boasted. Her pride in herself was obvious, and she made sure you knew it wasn't an act. Eiji was being won over, something that wasn't easy coming from his well known reputation as a stickler for what counted as wrestling and Kyoko's history being heavily dipped in many of the things he hated. His next question was another one that would have people watching carefully, and the answer might just surprise them.

"To be honest I haven't really thought of an opponent that would fill that spot. Some would say Da Xia but I'm ready to move past her. I've been fighting her for half of my career and I can’t think of anything else we can do to each other. I might have more to give other rivals like Eirina instead. Some old names might come up like Tracy, Ducky or Melody since people think they’re on my level. And I know some people who came way later have started making a name for themselves like Charlotte, Akari or Alizeh who could be coming after me any day now who I wouldn’t mind knocking down and showing them they’re place. But if you need a single name…I guess former champion Tina Armstrong. We don’t have a ton of history but I always felt if I was allowed to compete in that tournament I would be the first champion. She avoided me her entire reign so I would love nothing more than to make her come to me and then beat her to prove that. But if that doesn’t happen I know I have many challengers to choose from.” Kyoko said.

"Ah, yes, Da Xia..." Eiji huffed as soon as she mentioned those words. Of course he was familiar with her long-running feud with the Chinese wrestler. It was, after all, an ever-present rivalry in the wrestling world, and one that had carried through many matches over the years. When his finger was on the pulse of the industry, he naturally had been keeping up...and he had seen enough matches between them involving mud, bikinis, hentai, and any combination of the above to roll his eyes to the thought. When Kyoko mentioned moving past her, though, that made Eiji sit up a little in his seat. Some might have seen a woman who felt she ha had bigger and better things on her mind than old grudges, but Eiji saw a Kyoko who was moving past her embarrassing past and growing into a serious, capable champion. Perhaps even one he would be proud to interview!

"Well," he said, "I suspect some of my regular viewers might be a little surprised when I say this, but I'm fully in favor of you moving past Da Xia. The championship is an opportunity to reinvent yourself and to move forward with a clean slate - especially knowing you'll have so many cameras watching. When you've dealt with the same opponent for years, I can see you wanting a change of scenery. And you've surely earned it." He nodded his head to the names she listed - even tilting his head a little at the mention of Alizeh Midori, who he was sure could give Kyoko a much-demanded dream match - but when she brought up Tina as her dream opponent, and in particular the inaugural Middleweight Championship Tournament, he nodded his head. "I suppose there's only one way to find out which of you two would've won out, there." he said. "Next question I wanna ask, I know there are going to be some people out there who will argue you can't really be said to be on the level of other champions because you didn't have to beat anyone to be awarded with the belt. That that keeps you frm being a fighting champion. What are your thoughts there?" He couldn't imagine they were charitable.

Kyoko knew that the mention of her oldest rival would get that kind of reaction. The brutal wrestling matches her and Da Xia had didn’t hide the many matches and fights that guys like him despised. The way he perked up it was clear he thought the kinds of fights she did against her were behind her, they would certainly be less frequent without Da around to goad her. Kyoko didn’t see them ending though, but she wouldn’t tell him that. She did like the idea of a change of scenery and fighting new opponents, most would flock to her gunning for what she had and Kyoko would knock them down and prove why she was always meant to be the best champion. Eiji knew that, and it brought him to his next question about how Kyoko won the Middleweight championship. The Belly Queen smiled, which was surprising given how many would expect her to answer that question.

“I hope those same people keep that energy for the Openweight winner. I do expect to get flack for the way I won the championship but I don’t care.” Kyoko said with a cocky shrug, then pointed to the belt that was on her. “I competed in Apex the same way everyone else did. I fought Astrid in that hardcore match where we tried to destroy each other and then I fought Ryori at We Are LAW. While my body was still sore from those battles I was challenged by Emaline for Apex and accepted where I not only beat her, I did so even though she brought her lackeys out to bail her out when I was winning.” Kyoko passionately spoke before grabbing the Middleweight belt and holding it closer to Eiji. “I won this the same way every other member on that roster wants to win the Openweight and I beat a fellow Middleweight to do it. Not only do I say that makes me a fighting champion but I would even say that I proved I could win the Openweight if I wanted too. I will prove a champ makes the belt and I’ll make this title feel special.” Kyoko proudly boasted.

"If you want proof of what I mean, listen to the reaction I got when I won the championship. People have been mocking me since I've been here, then I won the Middleweight championship and it's all cheers and rejoicing. One second I'm a joke to talk like I'm a big shot, the next everyone's my fan. When Aliana and Rosy won championships at Fight the LAW niether one of them got this much of a positive reception, people weren't knocking down doors to congratulate them, I got more support for my win than either of them combined. The reason for that is because unlike those two I intimidate everyone, and me winning the middleweight championship was a moment of relief for them. They knew that the moment I chose this their chances of becoming champions shot right up and they wanted me to feel safe and content because now the chance of someone besides me winning the Openweight championship became possible. They think that because I got the lesser belt they can win that and avoid me and be recognized for greatness, what they won't realize is that even if they do win it, they will still have to compete with me, every time they get the Main event they'll do so having to follow up after one of my matches, or try to keep me in their shadow, and none of them are big enough to eclipse me. I don't get overshadowed or outdone and once they see that I am the top champion and they'll go right back to hating me because it's hard to outdo greatness." Kyoko said confidently.

Eiji scratched at his beard as he thought over what Kyoko was telling him. In truth, he was one of those people who had his doubts about awarding Kyoko the belt, and whether or not she had truly earned it. Sure, she was competing in Apex, but she hadn't beaten the last champion, and she wouldn't even be in the seat she was in now were it not for Lilian abandoning her position. He wanted to give Kyoko the benefit of the doubt, but he was also perfectly prepared to go on one of his famous tirades about the state of the wrestling industry if he found her answers unsatisfactory. However, when he heard what Kyoko had to say, he had just about done a complete 180. She hadn't gotten the title for nothing - the fact that she had landed her spot through her participation in Apex meant that she lived up to every standard the Openweight Champion, who was supposed to be the top wrestler in the company, would. When Eiji thought back on all the breathtaking moments Kyoko recounted, each of them showcasing her talent and her will to win, he had a hard time arguing that she wasn't champion material. And when she went on to recount how her winning the Middleweight Championship had changed everyone's opinions on her, Eiji sat up a little straighter in his seat, blinking a couple of times. He, too, was one of them - he'd expressed his doubts and reservations about Kyoko before, but now that the Belly Queen had taken a division-level championship, he was growing more and more aware of the potential she could really hold, and the potential she was demonstrating right before his eyes. He couldn't find anything to argue there! Eiji might have been famously a free thinker who wasn't afraid to speak his mind, but if even he had been won over by Kyoko's newfound achievements, maybe she really was on to something.

"Well said, Ms. Akan - well said." Eiji nodded his head to Kyoko before clearing his throat. "I can see how much the title means to you - and I can see, too, that you're willing to do the honors justice." It seemed more likely that Kyoko hoped the belt could do her justice, but he chose to let that part go unspoken. "I appreciate that. You're doing what any champion should. But your point brings my thoughts back around to the Openweight Championship. Some critics of the idea have said that having an openweight belt at all invalidates the accomplishments of the weight divsion champions, and brings them from the main event spot down to the midcard. Others have said that if they don't need to compete for the main event spot, they can all make a case to be equals, as was intended. You, clearly, don't see your belt as being devalued at all by the change. Do you have anything else to weigh in on the debate with?"

Kyoko was too busy focusing on herself to see her winning over Eiji like that, her mind was set on actually proving her point with the interview and reminding people she was going to be the talk of the company for years to come just like she'd been years before. Whatever new titles they threw at her wouldn't invalidate that.

"Like I said, the champ brings value to the champion. The reason I don't rate Tina is because she always picked her challengers by her friends or those who jumped her, never giving them to contenders worthy of it. The reason I consider myself better than Lillian is because she actively avoided worthy challengers until LAW was forced to pick opponents for her. Right now Wyvern is just one of many challengers who jumped at the chance to challenge me and has the credentials to prove herself. She's not my friend or my rival and she didn't have to attack me to get the match. She got it because she earned it, and when she loses the next challenger will be someone who's worth it too. None will beat me but they provide the best possible challenge. That's what makes a champion and that's why no one will ever doubt that I'm just that good." Kyoko said. "While the Openweight champion tries to prove she's worthy my worth will be proven by the kingdom of power I make. A castle built of broken contenders that's home to me and me alone. Within a few months they'll look at this belt and think of me, within a year this will be the highlight of every show across the globe! After that...I don't think any other belt will be worth this kind of discussion. Does that answer your question?" Kyoko asked, confidence brimming with every word.

Eiji nodded his head as he noted down what Kyoko was telling him. He looked up and raised an eyebrow curiously - she certainly was talking big, and launching into some rather sweeping and dramatic analogies. In the middle of one of her rants, Eiji opened his mouth, preparing to speak up about how all of Kyoko's predictions were fair and good, but there was only so much she could back herself up when she didn't have any title matches under her belt to date, and she wasn't really addressing the question of how she viewed the circumstances under which she was given the title. However, he stopped just short of saying anything. What Kyoko had said thus far did well enough to tell him that her confidence wasn't misplaced. Kyoko had already proven herself a fixture of LAW with plenty of staying power, and she cemented herself as an icon of the company; even if Eiji didn't quite see eye to eye with her gimmick, he had to concede that Kyoko didn't get to where she was for lack of trying. She definitely had something in her that could back up her claims, and for now, he was willing to hear that out.

"So what I'm taking from you here is that...you'd rather see this as a clean slate to define yourself as a champion going forward? Well, I'll leave you to it..but you definitely give me reason to put my faith in you!" He chuckled to himself. "And that's not flattery - you should know I don't flatter anybody. That actually leaves me with a good segue into the next thing I wanted to ask you. And that's about Wyvern. You looked into her and her career at all? What are your impressions? Anything you want to be sure you watch her for?"

Kyoko's thoughts were vivid and she expressed all of them with passion that Eiji couldn't deny. Even if his conclusion wasn't exactly what Kyoko had in mind, at least she was getting something postive from the critic of all things wrestling. Her gimmick would never be his thing, but her wrestling skill should surpass that, and it was something that Kyoko prided herself in just like her abs. Now the focus turned to her opponent, known as Wyvern that would be her first opponent.

"Yes, I looked into her past and I know what she's like. I think she's crazy, but she's a scrapper and a brutal fighter, the kind that mainstream would hate. I'm sure I pissed off a few people when I named her to be my first opponent, but as you can guess I don't care. Her lack of appeal to the mainstream made her more interesting to me, she's exactly the kind of opponent I want to face, wrestling shouldn't be about how many people love me or how many shirts you can sell with my brand. I'm the champ because I'm the best and I believe I'm the best, Wyvern is someone who never would've gotten this chance before I came along because everyone else is either hiding behind management to help them pick people so they look good or they're cowards. I'm interested in fighting those that can prove something to me and I know this bitch has a lot to prove. I know she fights like crazy and will throw her caution to the wind to beat me so I know if I can beat that nothing will surprise me anymore." Kyoko explained.

Eiji nodded his head to Kyoko's description of her would-be challenger, not without a grumble under his breath as he stroked at his beard. "Listen, if she's a scrapper, that already puts her as a more worthy choice for the title than plenty of folks..." But at the same time, he smiled just a little wider when he heard her reasons for offering her the title shot. He and Kyoko might not have seen eye to eye on everything, but at least in this respect, she definitely got it. "If you're willing to give her the chance when no one else would...y'know what? I'm going to applaud you for it. It's noble to offer someone that sort of opportunity - it's a sign you think they have what it takes to be the best. In this business, I would argue that's one of the biggest signs of respect there is." He adjusted his glasses a little as he said that - he never expected to find himself commending Kyoko Akan, who was well renowned as having one of the biggest egos in a sport already marked by egotistical behavior, on her graciousness. Kyoko's comments earlier in this very interview had done little to dispell her reputation. But maybe she had a point, after all.

"And what's more...you get it. You know that wrestling isn't a popularity contest, it's a sport. Whoever holds the title should be whoever's the best wrestler - end of story. The whims of the public shouldn't be what defines who gets a shot at the gold and who doesn't, only the accomplishments of you ladies in the ring. Otherwise, we get brainless bimbos and second-rate idols who don't know what they're doing out there in the main event..." He grumbled, but shrugged, continuing nonetheless. "If there's someone espousing those ideas at the top of their division, though? Maybe that'll send the business a message that needs to be sent."

"Now then, on the topic of Wyvern...will I be prying too much if I ask you if you have any strategies in mind for the match? Anything we should expect from you?"

Kyoko smirked at Eiji's words as she started to get Kyoko's idea. "Exactly, I could name several names in the big spotlight like I've mentioned before, stars you get by on popularity. The reason I don't is because I think I can find better talent elsewhere and ones that deserve a chance to fight me more than they do. If I ignored Alizeh Midori she'd get a shot somewhere else, same with girls like Harmonia or Tracy. How many of them would think to pick Wyvern even though she could potentially beat all three of them? I'm not going to call this generous because that would imply I'm doing her a one time favor, I'm doing this because that's how I think it should be. I don't like Wyvern and she's not my friend, but from the very beginning I've told these idiots that the only goal of a wrestler is to wrestle and I practice what I preach." Kyoko said proudly. Of course Kyoko had a strategy to beat back this new face and challenger and ensure that her start as champion wasn't the end of it.

"The same thing it always is, pick apart the body and isolate limbs so they can't impede me breaking her down. The same strategy that's worked all this time because it's so simple no one can stop it. I'll adjust if necessary but my target is still the same. Doesn't matter how tough she is once I get where I'm going she'll drop like anyone else." Kyoko added while tapping on her Belly Queen title which she had won and defended through several appliances of the strategy she mentioned. The same way that won her the Middleweight title by destroying Emaline.

Once again, Eiji could only meet Kyoko's words with a sagely nod of his head. The only goal of a wrestler is to wrestle - he didn't think he could have said it better himself. He never expected to think this way about the self-proclaimed Belly Queen, but Kyoko seemed to embody everything he would've wanted in a wrestler, and everything he felt was lacking in some of the more acclaimed grapplers in LAW. If she was going to be the future for the company, and if she was going to set the stage for what LAW might look like in the future, Eiji was all for it - the wrestling world needed more people like her. He didn't think his opinions on Kyoko were going to see such a sudden shift, but he couldn't deny that spending the time to talk to the newly-crowned champion face to face was giving him all the more reason to come around to her.

And so too, he nodded his head with approval toward Kyoko as she related her strategy for her upcoming title match. "That's certainly a plan that'll net results," he described. "Plenty a match has been one because one competitor knew the right tricks to work a limb - you'll be taking away your opponent's use of it at the same time you whittle away at their endurance, and you'll leave them all the more vulnerable to the killing blow. Ah, the hell do I know, though - you must know this by heart if you've read enough of my reports back in the day. And you would know it most of all, Ms. Akan, if it's been working this well for you thus far - you certainly have the record to prove that! Whatever comes of the match at We Are LAW 6, I'd say you've got a good plan heading into the big night...even if it might involve more belly punches than I might like..."

With a faint grumble under his breath, Eiji flipped his notepad closed. "Well, Ms. Akan, that just about wraps up everything I had to ask you tonight. Any closing remarks you'd like to make before we send you on your way?"

Kyoko had already said a lot, enough that many of her enemies were already rolling their eyes. She didn't care and knew she could go longer but if she had anything to say she knew that there was something she wanted to get out. "We're in a new era of wrestling Eiji, when it's all said and done I want everyone to look back at this moment and say this is when LAW grew into the top promotion in the world, and it's all thanks to Kyoko Akan." Kyoko said, paraphrasing much of what she already said in the interview with her closing statement.

A new era of wrestling - and one that Kyoko owed to herself. Thinking on it, Eiji found himself staring off into the distance; he brought his glasses a little further down his nose, raising an eyebrow in contemplation. He asked himself if it was egotistical of her to say such a thing - perhaps it was. After all, LAW had really been a perfect storm; with so many talented wrestlers coming together at the right time to make something special, it was hard to pin the credit on any one person. To take that credit was quite a boast indeed. And yet, somehow, Eiji couldn't help but believe her. Kyoko really had made herself a fixture of LAW, and she had seen it from its humble beginnings to where it was now. Now, LAW was more popular than it had ever been, and Kyoko had finally landed herself a position as champion. It wasn't too much of a stretch to wonder if there might be a correlation. At the very least, when Eiji thought back on everything he had heard from Kyoko tonight, he wouldn't doubt that if she wanted to make good on such a promise, she very well could. He'd been skeptical, but the commitment and the dedication he'd seen from her had left him convinced. Now, there was only the future to look forward to.

With that, Eiji shut his notebook and cleared his throat. "In that case," he explained, "I think that settles things. I won't keep you any more, Ms. Akan - but I have my faith in you to live up to what it means to be a champion. Let's hope you make me proud."
