Some Questions

So for the last month or so I've been wanting to do a sort of essay series on writing and RPing. A kind of advice column/guideline for people new and old to come to when they feel stuck on something and wanted something to look at to get the juices flowing again, or just learn of one specific writers opinions and methods. But... I'm a little stuck on how to go about that. The long and short of it is that I have two options in the kind of tone I plan on using for that essay series and both have their pros and cons. To try and get a feel for the audience I'd be writing for I have a few questions down below I wanted people to answer.
I'll be answering these questions as well just to give you an idea of my opinion on things along with a more detail explanation of what I mean by certain questions, but since the series will be about 4-9 paragraphs per essay I'll try and keep my points to one paragraph here at most. Anyway, onto the questions.
| How do you feel about formatting?
Basically, the method of prettying up a profile page or adding extra flare to how one presents their roster.
On my end, I do think good/attractive formatting is necessary evil. Even simpler forms of formatting show you care about presentation to an extent and in general an attractive profile attracts eyes.
| How do you handle heels and faces?
LAW being a world where wrestling is 'real' makes it a little harder to determine clear good guys from bad guys, to an extent at least.
For me, it depends on how the general audience would view the character and how much they like the gimmick. From what I've seen of Joshi wrestling heels don't really exist, there's only very aggressive and arrogant wrestlers with a cool gimmick that other wrestlers don't like. Not so much a bad guy, but a disliked person within the company... at least when the camera's on.
| How much detail do you put in your profile?
To be clear, Winner has a bare-bones template of all information that is likely required for all profiles here. But with that said, how much extra detail to you guys tend to add outside of those requirements? How long are the bio sections? The personality section? Additional points like adding likes, dislikes, and trivia? Things like that.
I personally like to keep things to about 2-ish paragraphs in terms of the bio and keep the personality section somewhat general so I have some wiggle room to expand and grow the character organically. As far as extra stuff, I like adding a likes/dislike section to help give an idea of the characters hobbies and vices, the trivia section is just fun stuff to add that might be interesting.
| How many (active) characters do you have?
I think this one is self-explanatory, but just to keep with the pattern, how many characters do you actively use at a time?
I'm trying to limit myself to about four-ish active characters, but that's likely to change at some point depending on what's going on and what ideas some people might have for my character.
| How do you set up matches?
Again, self-explanatory, but I feel like it's worth asking. Do you PM people? Go to discord?
Nowadays I usually just shoot a private message with a person I'm interested in a match and hit them up on discord afterwards for further details of the match.
| How much do you plan out?
Just in general how much planning happens when a match is agreed upon? Do you just plan out a winner and move on? Do you completely freeform it? Do you plan out the main beats and expand from there?
For myself, more recently there's been a lot more planning and working through the major beats of a match. Granted, most of those threads are somewhat story-driven and the more specific planning is for character development reasons, but I've been trying to have more discussion with my partners lately.
| How much communication happens throughout the match?
Again, self-explanatory. Is there a discussion between writers as the match goes on? Do you offer ideas or plans?
This is something I'm personally bad at, both due to my reserved personality and general bitterness throughout the years of... existing, but I'd like to think I'm slowly getting better at. At least with some of these more story driven matches there's a lot of talking between me and my partners.
| How much do you write in your replies/threads?
I don't need an exact word count, but what's the usual length of your replies?
I try to match my partners length, but on average I'm going for about 1-2 paragraphs per post after the intro stuff is done and the combat starts. Though this can change depending on the situation.
| Favorite characters to use?
Just gonna' have these last questions be fun ones because I'm expecting some pretty heavy answers for the above stuff.
Anyway, I'd say my favorites within my own roster are Amano and Kuro. Amano is just a good mix of gremlin and naturally normal girl that I can be a lot looser with her writing than other characters. Kuro... is a cartoon villain, and I like writing out her cutesy idol act while tempering with the more sadistic and mature internal thoughts she has.
| Favorite character that isn't yours?
Because we can't just jack off about our characters alone.
I mostly stick to the lightweight sphere since all my characters are in it, but it's a close tie between Rose Gold and GASTER. Rose is just an entertaining read no matter the match she's in and GASTER is adorable with her evil overlord shtick while still keeping to her morals.
Anyway, that's all I've got. Looking forward to those answers.
