I've never tried my hand at running an event outside my Coordinator role. If you’re willing to hear me rant for 1700~ words, I have an idea. This is a bit of an in-character pitch to play a bit of salesman. Scroll to the bottom if you want it explained in shorthand. And yes, I will shill songs I like. It's important, I swear >:(
Let me set the scene.
Don’t forget the background track:
But what Maisilyn wants, truly, is to make an entertainment explosion. She admires the many Pay-Per-Views and events across wrestling history. And thus, with LAW’s support, the gambling voodou Hotelier has snubbed her cigarette, shot back an ounce of rye, donned her signature velvet gloves, walked on the stage of the Open Bottle and began her elevator pitch.
Introducing: The Madison Gambit
Her decision to risk her business and personal finances in reviving her beloved hotel. Her home.
It starts as a video package of old radio, static and a series of clips, jazz and the history of professional wrestling in different venue types, turns into Maisilyn posing a question: “I ask you, loves. Why not here?”
What Maisilyn proposes is an unorthodox pre-taped extravaganza set to broadcast the following week. The action takes place over the course of three days. Starting Friday, Maisilyn insisted, as that is her favourite day… until Sunday. LAW wrestlers would be invited to come and participate in all sorts of match flavours and venues throughout her unusual hotel. Here are some of her proposed ideas:
- Fights in The Open Bottle: A relatively big jazz club and restaurant of Hotel Madison, positioned on its main floor and themed after speakeasies from the 1930s. Now re-fitted with a ring, surrounded by a crowd to vaguely resemble normal venues. She proposes this attraction as perfect for: Boxing, Pro Wrestling, Hardcore and Sexfights of any stipulation. Wrestlers are surrounded by a crowd of on-lookers at their tables and chairs, eager to eat, drink and enjoy the entertainment, with thematically sexy waiters and waitresses. ( Ex. Suits and bunny girls )
- Fights in the Hotel Rooms: For all your bedroom-flavoured, apartment-centric and bed match joy. Whatever the heart may desire, with preparations made to accommodate for the wrestler’s needs and their match. Please remember to thank her maids!
- Fights in an Open Area: For all your Falls Count Anywhere needs, Maisilyn is willing to offer her entire Hotel as a battleground. (Outside occupied rooms). Trash up the cocktail bar on the upper flow, smash up the giant mirrors in her gym or powerbomb each other into the reception desk. Just be mindful of other guests!
- Penthouse Suite: Albeit limited in its number, Maisilyn offers their finest rooms saved for the travelling billionaire or trust fund kid. Winners may have the rest of the weekend with free unlimited room service. Want some ice cream? New robe and slippers? Exotic candle? A steel chair? A ten-inch dragon dildo? Aye-aye, right away!
- Outside: For all those that want a street fight vibe with all the concrete, blood and parking lot carnage to a ring of fans. Feel free to use anything at your disposal. While Hotel Madison does not officially condone the smashing of cars, supplying of weapons or swanton bombing into the dumpsters, they won’t complain either. Just please, PLEASE stay off the roof and staff elevators. She already had three keys go missing… she wonders where they went. Hmmm. Oh well.
- Escape to the Limo: More of a novelty idea on her part as trying to appeal to the LAW-less crowd. A game of manhunter that starts typically from a high floor for the hunted, to which they must descend the floors and escape to the limo without being pinned or submitted. While it only REALLY needs two players, it can easily be extended into an extravaganza where it’s them vs the World, where anyone can strike. Sufficient quantities of ankle monitors and hand-held trackers are provided to account for the large spaces.
Yes! All matches typically have prizes for the winner announced by Maisilyn or a rep.
This can be free night stays, all expenses paid for those in the penthouse suites, a VIP section in the Open Bottle with a slightly different menu and priority attention from the many bunny girls and tuxedo’d men. Those participating in outside matches may be rewarded with a car ( of decent value but definitely not a bugatti ).
Those in Escape the Limo will be able to order the driver anywhere across Kyoto for a night. While this is the incentive for the hunted, if anyone manages to pin or submit the hunted, they will usurp the reward. ( This formula is open to be adjusted. For example, it could be that whoever pins/submits the hunted becomes the new hunted. Then it continues until someone gets into the limo at the front. )
As for the losers… Free drinks to dull the pain and shame, along with being escorted back to your room and any medical needs.
HOW does it take place? Elaborate a bit more on the setup for the matches.
Matches take place throughout the first two days at scheduled times, often spaced out and publicly advertised. Some are publicly viewable and wrestlers DO cross paths with members of the public and regular hotel staff ( See ideas 3, 5 and 6 ), while the others are either private and taped, or have safeguards. In short, the Hotel operates as normal with ongoing action, hoping to drive new patrons to pay the higher food/drink margins to be a part of the spectacles.
Monsy, this doesn’t sound like a Supercard or a Tournament. It’s confusing. How is it structured?
On the contrary, it’s a lot like a Supercard in practice. Maisilyn collects the footage, has it edited and submits it for broadcast. It resembles a normal card on the forum and edited into cinematic TV in-universe, set to be broadcasted, released for streaming and a limited DVD for the Japanese market.
For you, the player, you’re simply writing a match w/ a prize in a hotel themed around the 1930s. Its theme is Gatsby, being expressed with old furniture, colourful velvet ceilings and walls, leathers, silk curtains, chandeliers, varnished wood trims, some whites and a bit of gold. Clean, steam-pressed and old-fashioned luxury. Very high on customer service, where employee assault/disrespect may result in face-breaking violence from the Boss or their resident security demon. Maisilyn is a bit of a mobster. .
In truth! You can interpret her hotel HOWEVER you wish. You may also interact or choose not to interact with the unique setting as you wish. Both Maisilyn and any hotel employee NPC are yours to control. Optionally, I can also chime in with Maisilyn to make an intro, close out your character’s match as the host or somewhere in the middle for whatever reason.
Can we do anything else other than the six ideas?
Yes! That wasn’t to restrict anything, but I wanted to showcase what’s possible in this less usual setting. I also tried avoiding pegging stipulations to suggest total freedom.
Is there a Main Event?
Not really. There is only what I’d dub a last call. Essentially, the last match of the night. It can be fan-fare, but it hardly is a continuous card to be really named a Main Event.
Anything else going on? Is my wrestler here during downtime?
Yes. Maisilyn wants traffic. And so she opened the floodgates to hire some entertainers to fill the gaps of two days. This means, primarily in the Open Bottle and the Cocktail Bar, are various acts that can use the space. Stand-up comedy, a circus routine, magic shows and some cabaret theatre. LAW wrestlers and staff are able to book themselves a slot, but music-related entertainment is saved for the evenings. These are not part of any footage-gathering and more Maisilyn trying to be a hostess.
Wrestlers are given their own hotel rooms and given some special privileges in requests. While Maisilyn doesn’t admit to facilitating chaos, she DOES have an eye on rivals, who’s liked and who’s hated, and might try to put them side-by-side. Other than that, sky’s the limit on what you do in the setting.
IN SHORT, this is what amounts to a very optional Social Thread aspect. It would require a second subforum, but this addition to the Gambit may be clipped. I imagine this can just be an open subforum under the match subforum itself.
Why all these bells and whistles?
I admittedly find it fun painting my imagination here, even if the idea won’t land for many or becomes too impossible logistically. I enjoy the vibes where the versions that end up in media forms tell a different story of how wrestling can manifest. BUT, nothing will compare to being there and seeing it firsthand. An unforgettable experience no doubt.
OK, Monsy. Explain it to me simply what I am buying into…
- You are buying into writing a match or social thread at an old-fashioned hotel venue with an owner who acts like a mob boss.
- There’s usually a prize, typically not hard cash. You’re allowed to make up your own.
- For the ideas listed: Idea 5 is a parking lot FIGHT with cars, objects, weapons and people. Think this: or
- Idea 6 is just LAW-less rules / a game of wrestling manhunter to get into a limo. Two players to an ensemble. If you want my tip, using your wider roster can certainly be a solution to making a montage of action without the logistical nightmare of having six people.
- Idea 3 is FCA inside the hotel.
- Idea 4 and 2 are inside hotel rooms. Penthouse suite and regular accommodation.
- Idea 1 is a normal ring in a jazz club/restaurant, with people at tables instead of rows of chairs. But you’re ultimately free to make-up anything else.
- Any stipulation or weight class.
- Maisilyn and any hotel NPC is free to use. Or, I can assist.
- You’re free to interpret the hotel however you want. ( Prompt: 1930s / Prohibition-Era / Old Fashion Luxury / Gatsby )
- You don’t have to worry about ANYTHING except for writing the match you want to or the social thread you want to. Forget everything in the background.
