Hatching a Dragon (For Deskfan)

Unread post by CaptainL »

Meiyun was late. Every time she looked down to check her watch, she was reminded of that fact. It wasn't her fault - there had been a mess in the kitchen at House of Lai, and she wouldn't stand to leave until everything was attended to. She might have been a future recipient of the title of World's Strongest Wrestler, she might have been a wannabe shonen protagonist, but she was absolutely not going to leave a mess behind - she had too much self-respect for that. A few excited conversations with the new waitress about the latest anime later, and Meiyun found she was running behind where she had agreed to meet with her new trainer. That was when she knew she needed to move! She wasted no time in getting changed into her gym clothes, not even bothering to get to the gym first before she took off down the street. She huffed and panted as she sprinted down the sidewalk. She knew she was already late, and she was a hurry to get there before her trainer left. But more than that, she wanted to show her endurance - she was sure that if everyone saw her fighting through adversity to make it to the gym, it could only prove what she was capable of!

At last, as she neared the gym, Meiyun came to a skidding halt in a cloud of dust. She stopped to pant for breath, wiping some sweat from her brow before holding herself straighter. Then, she headed for the door. Her heart was pounding - not just from the worry of her trainer finding she was late, but from the excitement she felt, knowing she was about to take a step forward in her reach for the top!

"Sorry I'm late-!!"

Ellie paced around the gym, arms crossed. One would think that given how late the Young Lioness she was scheduled to meet here was, that she was frustrated by the trainee's crummy first impression. In reality, the young woman so nervous, she hadn't even been keeping track of time. She was busy thinking about all the ways she could mess this up. Why had she even applied for this mentorship program? Sure, she wanted to help someone less experienced then herself learn how to be a strong wrestler, but why did she think she was ready to do that? She'd only been in this business four years herself! Not to mention, her career so far had been far from impressive. While some of the girls who'd trained along side her had already made it big, she'd spent the entirety of her career on the indies right up until LAW scooped her up as a mid card talent. Hell, so far, she'd only had one televised match. So far, she'd mostly been relegated to wrestling with unsigned local talents in dark matches. The optimist in her tried to fight the negativity. After all, televised or not, she was undefeated in her matches. Surely, LAW's bookers would take notice of her talent eventually.

She was brought out of her thoughts by the yelling of her new personal student, Meiyun Lai. At the girl's proclamation, Ellie glanced at the clock. Meiyun was indeed, late. "It's fine!" Ellie said, forcing a smile to hide her nervousness. She approached Meiyun, offering a handshake. "Your name is Meiyun Lai, right? I'm Ellie Cooper, and I look forward to being your mentor."

Meiyun didn't even wait to for Ellie to react to her tardiness. The second she burst through the door, she keeled over forward, doubled over at the waist in a posture that came as much from being out of breath as it was a show of deference to her trainer. Her hands on her bent knees, she panted a few times, her shoulders rising and falling with each haggard heave. Her eyes were squeezed shut, her face was flushed red, and her teeth were clenched in a grimace as she thought about what was going to happen to her now. How was Ellie going to react? Would she be angry with her? It was her first lesson with her new trainer, and already she was making a fool of herself - how was she supposed to bounce back from this? She'd proven herself a failure before the session had even begun! All she could do now was tremble, awaiting Ellie to carry out her judgment...

But Ellie wasn't even mad. To Meiyun's surprise, the blonde simply greeted her with a smile and a handshake. When no yelling or beatings or challenges to impossible tasks came, Mei found herself taken aback. She looked up at Ellie with a confused look on her face - but when she came to realize that she really wasn't mad, she let out a sigh of relief that caused her to deflate. She felt like she'd just dodged a bullet.

As though nothing had happened, Meiyun was once again her usual cheerful self. She hopped back up to her feet, taking Ellie's hand and giving it an eager shake. "Yeah, that's me!~ I'm a waitress at House of Lai, but one day I'm going to be the strongest wrestler LAW has ever seen!"
