At her high school she was befriended by a member of the wrestling team, an outgoing popular girl, Emma. Emma eventually managed to help Tess grow her confidence, even getting her to join the wrestling team. Soon she gained a certain level of popularity, but had the self awareness to realize it was in large part looks (a recent growth spurt had been generous), and she managed to complete high school while keeping friends with her nerd crew, friend's she keeps in touch with still.
Her utter admiration of her friend Emma who pulled her from a dark place, made her vow to honor her mentor by joining a wrestling organization, and living her life to the fullest.
