It allowed him to continue playing the role of the dutiful son, but being a homeowner with a steady income from an occupation that wasn't his father's had also put him in a position where he would be able to get her out and help her start fresh.
It took some convincing, but he would agree to a plan she came up with, primarily because he'd still be able to help out should things go south: After learning from a friend in high school that Yolanda and her cousin Angel had both signed up with LAW, she wanted to join them there.
That road began with a college orientation at an institution that she would attend online. Alejandro had played his part well enough for long enough for their parents to trust him to take Maria there, and upon arrival, she would ditch her phone so she could no longer be tracked and they would head to the bank to withdraw the funds from a custodial account that was now solely in her name (but wasn't intended to be for long); money that she earned from summer jobs. Not wanting to risk being retethered to her parents in any way, the siblings took it to another that they were unaware of and made a new account there.

Owing to the combination of having no training, having devoted her time in school entirely to academic activities, having never been in a fight in her life, and being more interested in a submissive position to begin with, Maria focuses more on putting on a good show than she does on winning matches. That's not to say that she doesn't ever try, however, but her offense and defense are both very lacking.
But she does have a couple things going for her: Her charm and her ability to please, particularly from a submissive standing. She's well aware that she's not a good fighter and plays on that in an attempt to get the opponent to let their guard down and take it easy on her, convincing them to take on actions and maneuvers that are pleasurable for them as well as herself, or even better yet, only for them (for example, standing in a corner to receive oral).
